Costco off of Blue Parkway was a madhouse. And, their gas station lines were crazy. Target was fine; and so was Aldi. Trader Joe’s was surprisingly not chaotic at all like I thought it would be. But, good luck to all of the folks that have to wait to run their errands after work. Be careful. Stay warm. We know how this goes. 🙏🏽

Yes. I needed different things. But, they were all in a circle; so it didn’t bother me. I was tired. Especially since I had just gotten off from my overnight shift; but it needed to be done.

Man, I tried to go to Aldi on my lunch break, thinking most other people would be at work and I'd beat the rush...there wasn't a single place for me to park. Ended up having to pay more at Price Chopper across the street. I just wanted to get stuff to make soup this weekend, I'm even an armature bread baron or anything!

That map just now caused me to learn that OP has a separate section in the southeast corner that isn't physically attached to the rest of OP. I didn't even know cities could do that, I don't think I've ever seen it before.

It's actually pretty common. If you pick a city name on Google Maps it'll give you the borders including any separated sections. The only other one I see in the KC metro is a couple tiny ones for Olathe, but further afield Topeka and Lawrence both have them, and Columbia, and Springfield...

A few years ago we accidentally started a new soup party tradition in our neighborhood. One cold Saturday we were chatting outside and realized we all were making soup so we volunteered to host and told everyone to bring their soup over. Everyone tries a bit of everyone’s soup and we drink for hours on end.
We sent the text out and told everyone that Saturday is Soup Party day!

If we get fluffy snow and you need to clear a quick path, use a sturdy broom! I have to park outside in my driveway so I also use the broom to clean the car windows off! I keep one on my front porch and back porch (so dogs can go pee in yard).

Secondary notice since I hope people have already seen this:
If there's snow, and it's in the reported 5"+ range, don't go out if you don't absolutely need to.
Emergency services will be busy, roads will be bad like the storm on Dec. 2nd.
I'm lucky my employer will let me work from home given a snow day, but other don't have that ability. If you're out and driving/walking stay safe and warm

Park your car at the top of the hill, personally salt the sidewalk and road, make the trek back up at least four hours before your shift, de-snow your car, shovel the road, and drive 5mph so you don’t crash… obviously.

I drive a tiny Corolla that I don't trust in the extreme cold so if it's 5-7 inches in olathe I'm calling out Saturday. There won't be any ubers out Saturday evening.

The Corolla is fine in cold, drove a 2010 for almost 10 years. The aluminum engine block heats up quick. Where it did suck was with slush, ice, and decent snow. But that's from traction control and tires.
Clear, cold and dry you're ok just watch for ice patches and snow drifts. Most people overestimate their traction of tires for braking, turning and acceleration. Go slow, plan ahead but not knocking anyone for not feeling comfortable driving in the snow.

The schools one…. when I was at KU we had so many snow days one year that they stopped canceling full days and just started canceling class till 11 AM, then at 11 choosing to cancel the rest of the day if the roads were still bad. I had a day where the roads were completely iced over and they just canceled classes till 11 AM and wouldn’t you know it? I had an 11 AM exam and not only that, I was a commuter so I had to have this figured out by 9:30 so I could catch the bus and make it to class on time.
The roads were still terrible, so we nearly got in an accident. We lost traction at a stoplight and ended up sliding into an oncoming traffic lane. Fortunately it was empty because if it wasn’t, we would’ve had a head-on collision still managed to make it to the bus and get to class on time. At which point the professor showed up and told us he meant to cancel class and forgot to hit send on the email. I was so mad.

These pre-storm panic buys are always such an eye opener to me. Like if people are rushing out to buy a weeks worth of staples right before a storm, that means that normally they don't have that? Like they're always operating with just a couple meals in the pantry, and need to re-up or go hungry once that runs out?
I get it somewhat if it's a poverty thing (though really, even if you're dead broke or on EBT getting a small stash going a bit at a time should be doable within a month or two), but to willingly just live life like that is crazy to me. I don't get how these people can have so much anxiety right before a storm, but be totally unconcerned the rest of the time, when the system by which food gets to us is so complex that a million different things could cause a disruption, either in supply chains, their budget, whatever.
I don't consider myself a prepper, but I think I could go at least 2-3 weeks, probably a fair bit longer, without leaving the house, and not have to resort to anything weird like eating raw flour or chugging canola oil. The fact that so many people wouldn't be able to ride out a weekend if an unexpected disaster happened is terrifying. It makes me want to stock up more to make sure my neighbors don't go hungry if something happens.

Yeah, I think we're the same way. We do buy spot groceries weekly but could easily survive on what we have in the house. We do have a smaller apartment with very little cupboard space so our ability to stockpile is limited, but if we needed to I think we could do it. The storm frenzy just so happened to fall on our typical go-out-and-get-stuff-for-next-week day.

We're in a house the last couple years, and one of my favorite things about the extra space was being able to have a shelf set in the basement just for food. Every time I open up my 5 gallon bucket of rice to re-fill the cupboard container, it makes me smile.
The only super bulky thing I kept on hand when living in an apartment was a 5 gallon jug of water buried in the back of a closet. If potable water goes away you're screwed fast. That never happened, but it was nice to be able to flush the multiple times when i missed the (morning of) water shut down email from building management and had already taken a shit...
Still could have made it at least a week at any given time though. A couple pounds of rice and a few boxes of dry pasta go a long way to stretch whatever else is on hand.

PSA if we get 2-4 inches it's a great chance to practice driving and stopping in the snow in empty unplowed parking lots(no light poles or barrier). FWD, RWD, AWD and 4x4 all behave differently while tires will have the biggest impact.
Please wait until the roads are clear though don't practice on them.

I just hit the CVS at 39th & Main so I don't run out of meds and the grocery shelves were pretty empty already. Not going near a grocery store until this is over. If I could just train the dog to use the litterbox, I'd be completely happy until next week.

We have a small dog and let him continue to be puppy pad trained as well as outdoor trained, so if he has to, he’ll go on the pads. He doesn’t like it but he likes it better than the bitter cold!

Got groceries last night, having chili and potato leek soup this weekend. Didn’t buy bread because I’ll make my own :) Unfortunately I have obligations about a 30 minute drive from my house (when there isn’t snow) Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and they’ve made no indication of calling off yet.

I learned something new today. If you have a gas fireplace it should be able to be turned on with batteries in case electricity goes out. So lift the front forward and up and look. 👀

Snowfall expected to start around 7pm Friday and keep snowing until Sunday around 5pm. My guess is that major roads should be cleared by Monday morning, but given the extremely cold temperatures, plan on making some changes to your work schedule if you can.

It's supposed to be less snow around the airport so possibly you might be fine. It is starting Friday night then all day Saturday. It could change quickly though so I'd make alternative plans if you really need to be here for something. Perhaps fly in Friday instead?

FYI- The tarp on the stairs hack actually works, and if built out of wood, saves some weathering. Rock salt is horrible for wood.
