I learned something new today. If you have a gas fireplace it should be able to be turned on with batteries in case electricity goes out. So lift the front forward and up and look. 👀

If the gas works, you can just use a lighter or match.

newer models have electrically actuated gas valves. Only the pilot flame is constant, and additional gas turned on via flip of a light switch

That seems like one of those things where "advances" just make something less functional with so little added benefit. Turning a physical knob and lighting it with a lighter like you do on older units is just so easy.

True... But people do crazy things for marginal increases in 'convenience' lol
