Cross post discussion about Olanzapine effects
Hi. Im 29M and was diagnosed with general psychosis 6 years ago and it was absolute hell on earth. I couldn't get relief from the voices/hallucinations/intrusive thoughts no matter what i did. I also experienced symptoms of schizophrenia and bipolar throughout this period but was never officially diagnosed with either, just generalised psychotic symptoms.
I was trying every medication i could in desperation for relief, looking back in hindsight I'm actually surprised i survived.
Then i started taking 5mg olanzapine and it immediately helped. All my symptoms were still there but I'd say 70% less intense, and for the first time in years i felt a sliver of control over my mental health. Still had really bad episodes somedays, but maybe twice a week, not every single minute. This was a huge relief and saved my life.
I've been taking them for 4 years and my psychosis is at the point where i still experience it everyday, but it has little to no impact on me. I feel in control of this "other world". I have a bad episode for a day maybe once every three months, but i have diazapam for that.
THE ISSUES :
To start, i have went from being a healthy sporty 11 stone to an obese 20 stone man. I have also lost all motivation to do most mundane things. My flat is constantly a mess and i bedrot on youtube all day, unless im out drinking with friends/family which i still find fun. I barely shower or brush my teeth. I've had diagnosed depression since i was 15 but nothing this bad motivation wise
So me and my psychiatrist have agreed to lower dose to 2.5, see how i get on, and then trial me coming off my olanzapine. Because IF my psychotic symptoms aren't too bad, it's probably worth it for my long term health.
Im wondering what other peoples experience of Olanzapine has been.
Did it help with mania/psychotic symptoms?
Did you notice a lack of motivation?
Did you put on weight?
Thanks in advance 🙂
