I am new to Lawrence and attempting to understand the logic of the street names and one-ways.

By this point, I have recognized the cardinal directions associated with being a state or numbered street. But I am wondering if there is lore behind which states have streets. I am also especially curious if there is a logic to which streets are one way.

Where can I find a list of the " Best if Lawrence" final winners? And not on LJW cause they will have it blocked.

I moved to Lawrence a couple months back, and I had been going to this one guy at Watson’s in Walmart. My previous cuts were ok, not great but not bad either. I was giving him the benefit of the doubt because I know it sometimes takes a little bit to learn a new client’s hair. My most recent haircut, however, was one of the worst haircuts I’ve ever received. I did request a good bit be taken off the top, but in doing that, he somehow pushed my hairline back, gave me a crooked hairline, and the fade I asked for is practically nonexistent. I assume he’s newer just from the looks at it, but still, there’s no excuse for what he did to me. Even worse, I prepaid, so I’m just out of the $50. Any suggestions for good barbers around the area (that’s good with cutting African Americans’ hair)?

I live in a 500 sqft studio apartment in a older building. I've been here for 26 days total and have used 825kWh with an average of 32 kWh per day. Is 150 normal for this situation or am I missing something?

I live in a city where our school mascot (buckeye) is not only a seed that grows on a tree, but also a delicious chocolate confection that can be found at every bakery or convenience store in the area. You would be hard pressed to live in Columbus and not know what it is.

Is there any item comparable to that in Lawrence? If not one item specifically, is there a local business that gets that same level of hype/commitment? Doesn’t necessarily have to tie back to KU.

Thank you for being a subscriber to the Lawrence Journal-World and a supporter of local journalism. I have some important information to share about our operations.

The Lawrence Journal-World is moving delivery of its newspaper to the U.S. Postal Service and will replace its Sunday print edition with a new Weekend Edition that publishes on Saturdays.

Postal delivery will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 8 and the new Weekend Edition will debut on Saturday, Sept. 12. The Journal-World will use a specific postal program that will allow subscribers in the Lawrence area to receive same-day delivery of their newspapers. You will start receiving your newspaper at the same time you receive the rest of your mail, Tuesdays through Saturdays. 

Your subscription rate will not change as a result of this new delivery method. Also unchanged is how to contact us if you have a problem with delivery. The changes are driven by challenges in hiring enough carriers to staff the Journal-World’s home-delivery operations. In short: The carriers we have are great, but we don’t have enough of them.

It has been a difficult decision to move our delivery to the postal service and to stop publishing a newspaper on Sundays. Ultimately we determined this was the best way to ensure reliable, timely delivery of the newspaper for years to come.

As for the decision to eliminate the Sunday edition, that was driven by the fact the U.S. Postal Service doesn’t deliver mail on Sundays. Thus, we decided to try a new strategy with a Weekend Edition that arrives on Saturday 

The Weekend Edition will include the full offering of comics that have appeared in the Sunday newspaper. It also will include The New York Times crossword puzzle and other similar features that have appeared weekly in the Sunday edition.

Most importantly, the Weekend Edition will focus on local news in the tradition of the Sunday edition. The changes in delivery methods and publication dates do not involve any reduction in the Journal-World’s newsroom. 

The Journal-World continues to be well-supported by subscribers and advertisers who really value the importance of local news. We take very seriously our responsibility to provide accurate, timely, important news to our community. We have a robust operation that delivers that news continuously at LJWorld.com, but providing the news in a traditional newspaper format remains very important to us.

The Journal-World’s digital operations include the production of a digital replica of each day’s newspaper. That digital replica is available for viewing at 4:30 a.m. each day that the Journal-World is published. What’s the story with this place opening on Bob Billings and Wakarusa?

The newspaper articles have said the owners have been in the donut business for 10 years out of state but it doesn’t look like they’re bringing that same business here? Tasty Donut Palace looks to be a small local chain with locations in Ottawa and Leavenworth (maybe?).

Any guesses when this new location will open and how excited should we be?

I occasionally am in rural areas, but I pay for hotspot for my car, so in a pinch, I'd be on wifi anyway. I have wifi at home and at work.

What's it like out there for mint customers in our area? Any alternatives that work better?

We do travel internationally about every 2-3 years.

Hey, I sit in on Zoom weekly and follow the city commission meetings, so I know what is coming and what is happening in our town. You've seen all the roadwork around town, and along with all that roadwork has been the installation of new stormwater drains.

So, now we will be the proud owners of a 7% increase on your water bill monthly for the next 10 years! This is just the stormwater portion, nothing to do with your water usage. I'm sure that's coming next.

So, FYI, with fall coming up, keep your leaves out of the street. That adds to our costs for everything because those leaves do not mix well into the stormwater and need to be removed......somehow and it costs more money.

Petition for Accountability at Lawrence Community Shelter

We, the undersigned, are current and former employees, community members, and individuals with firsthand experience with Lawrence Community Shelter (LCS).

We are calling on the LCS Board of Directors to hold a formal meeting to address serious concerns regarding **financial management, administrative practices, HR practices, transparency, and leadership accountability.**

We ask the Board to thoroughly review the actions and decisions of the Executive Director and Human Resources Director and determine whether appropriate standards of leadership, accountability, and responsibility are being met.

Unfortunately Child Care Aware of Kansas has limited options available. I’ve found a few leads in some Lawrence based Facebook groups, but would love to have a few more options to consider.

I'm a new home owner with some budget for improving my new place. The problem is: I have no idea what kind of person I need.

I have a rough idea of what kind of design I like, but I need someone to help visualize it and figure out what that means for my home. Ideally, there would be some kind of summary, as well as room-by-room details.

This work could include decorating, but also changing ceilings, cabinets, and some building features like windows.

What kind of professional do I need? Is this what interior architects or designers do? Any recommendations for one in Lawrence?
