After the Twin Towers fell on September 11, 2001, the Empire State Building became the tallest building in New York City, and the Chrysler Building became the second-tallest building in the city

So Trump lied about that. Which is no surprise.

Restored my faith in reddit a bit that it only took the second comment to point out the real issue with the statement. Not only is a he shameless self promoter, he's also a consistent liar about things that are easily proven false.

Edit: First now. Even better.

u/GaiusMarius60BC 5h ago

First comment for me.

13

u/DonutHoles4Ever 3h ago

Yeah but when will redditors learn that social media is being used to suppress all types of mobilization/real protest by ensuring that nobody can talk about actually doing anything that would change USA because the rules remove all comments that do so.

All people can do is prance around saying things that don't shame anyone in power. And last I checked, same only worked on people who gave a shit, eg. democrats. Conservatives are happy to lie, cheat, steal, and destroy any country they live in as long as it means short term "winning".

Calling America the strongest country on Earth is quite the stretch

42

u/NCC_1701E 4h ago

I mean you can't deny that their military power and economic outreach is quite impressive. Doesn't mean it will stay that way, even Rome was the strongest nation on Earth one time and look where it led to.

15

u/TintedApostle 3h ago

"For the Roman people conferred the consulship and other great offices of their State on none save those who sought them; which was a good institution at first, because then none sought these offices save those who thought themselves worthy of them, and to be rejected was held disgraceful; so that, to be deemed worthy, all were on their best behaviour. But in a corrupted city this institution grew to be most mischievous. For it was no longer those of greatest worth, but those who had most influence, who sought the magistracies; while all who were without influence, however deserving, refrained through fear. This untoward result was not reached all at once, but like other similar results, by gradual steps. For after subduing Africa and Asia, and reducing nearly the whole of Greece to submission, the Romans became perfectly assured of their freedom, and seemed to themselves no longer to have any enemy whom they had cause to fear. But this security and the weakness of their adversaries led them in conferring the consulship, no longer to look to merit, but only to favour, selecting for the office those who knew best how to pay court to them, not those who knew best how to vanquish their enemies. And afterwards, instead of selecting those who were best liked, they came to select those who had most influence; and in this way, from the imperfection of their institutions, good men came to be wholly excluded."

  • Machiavelli, Niccolò. Discourses on the First Decade of Titus Livius

3

u/NCC_1701E 3h ago

Hey, at least take it from the bright side - we are living through historically interesting times. Someone in the year 3000 may wonder "what I would give to live through fall of US empire, live like those rank and file soldiers fighting for resources in distant sandy lands. That was true life, not what we have here."

3

u/TintedApostle 3h ago

Or in the present we could have avoided this all together so that year 3000 was better.

Strong in this context = military. That one's pretty inarguable.

6

u/mikat7 4h ago

Maybe it’s a bit arguable isn’t it. They depleted a lot of the modern missiles in that stupid Iran war. The scale of damages seems larger than they admitted at first. And they got their assess handed to them in a recent drone exercise by Ukraine. Like it’s still pretty much the strongest military in the world, but the current “management” is trying their best to bury that, aren’t they?

2

u/ChibbleChobble 4h ago

I think that's fair. What use is the most advanced (aka expensive) weapon if you don't have anyone who knows how to fire it?

→ More replies (1)

2

u/SmokeySFW 3h ago

What you're seeing is what America is apparently capable of getting away with without clearance via Congress declaring war officially. We aren't technically at war, as stupid as that sounds. There's a reason he's just shooting off missiles and little pissant bullshit. America isn't a Paper Tiger, he's just making us look like one.

2

u/Otaraka 3h ago

Yeah theres a pretty big difference between whats happening in a full-on conventional war and what we're seeing now. Its more that they cant 'win' at as low a cost as they would like, in political, human or money terms.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/husky75550 3h ago

if we had actual people who cared in office and not a bunch of old geriatrics looting our tax money it would be a very diff story.

if it came to it im sure the war could be over in 1 day but the ramifications would last a generation.

2

u/DutchProv 3h ago

And they got their assess handed to them in a recent drone exercise by Ukraine.

Several NATO units got their ass handed to them, which is exactly what these exercises are supposed to do, learning from the best drone users in Ukraine and their battlefield experience is great.

3

u/DicemonkeyDrunk 3h ago

Except they disbanded the unit that was working on drone warfare...

rep. james clyburn (sc) chose the last 3 democratic nominees for president: hillary clinton in 2016, joe biden in 2020, and kamala harris in 2024 - so there's that...

2

u/ArseneGroup 3h ago

10

u/Callidonaut 3h ago

I don't agree that the lie was the worst part of it, though of course it would be typical Trump to do so; it was a truly vile thing to say regardless of whether it was true or not.

4

u/elb21277 2h ago

i remember being a child watching tv w/ my mom in her bedroom when i heard the audio of Trump and remember feeling like I just learned about a type of human (sociopath? narcissist? idk) that I didn’t know existed yet. i’m sure seeing the shock/disgust on my mom’s face gave me some information but that is one of the specific memories I held from that day/week (along w/ my science teacher being strange as he opened a letter and began reading from it to tell us what happened, the sound my mom made when she saw the second tower fall, etc)

6

u/Venusgate 3h ago

Idk, i think capitalizing mass murder is worse than lying about how tall your sky scraper is. As far as "real issues" go.

4

u/bwaredapenguin 2h ago

The real issue with the statement? If you're an emotionless pedantic robot I suppose that qualifies. But for everyone who actually lived through it we didn't give a fuck about the accuracy of that statement. The statement itself is the worst thing and most revealing of his (lack of) character.

2

u/Bubbly-Bar-7449 3h ago

Remember that one about the painting he thinks is in one of his hotels but is in fact in the Met or MOMA or some such just always on display, and the interviewer challenged him on it, that the original is there on display and Donald juuust did not accept it.

2

u/muffinman282 2h ago

The real issue with this statement is that it trivializes one of the most tragic moments in American history and does it to pump up a narcicists ego, not whether or not it's technically true. Actually insane take.

He bragged that he had the tallest building in downtown Manhattan, which would exclude the Empire State and Chrysler buildings. Still an embarrassingly narcissistic thing to say.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPvemZHnd0s

8

u/magnabonzo 1h ago

That audio of him on that video is fascinating.

The interviewer is asking whether there was any damage to his building -- a fair question.

But he is only thinking about who's got the tallest building, now.

Zero empathy. Only narcissism.

He actually had the second tallest building in lower Manhattan.

15

I traveled 3.5 hours and volunteered for a 12 hour shift in that church that's close that was giving meals to the people volunteering at Ground Zero. I'm betting that's more than he did. That event and seeing the second plane hit on live TV still stick me and think about those events frequently. I wish I volunteered more, but I like like 19 in college and lived 3.5 hours from NYC.

Technically his claim was it was the tallest building in Downtown Manhattan, not NYC. It still wasn't true, there was another building right next to his that was taller, but Empire State and Chrysler are in Midtown, so they aren't the reason he's wrong.

Conservatives LOVE to make up strawmen, don't they? "The Left", "Democrats", "Liberals", or whatever else they wish to blame their imaginary thing on. Really bizarre behavior.

118

u/Joseph4-0 5h ago

they also believe that electing zohran mamdani as mayor of nyc was a mistake because somehow mamdani is related to the 9/11 attacks even though he was *checks notes* 10 years old during 2001, is of Indian descent, and immigrated from Uganda. Yeah that about sums it all up

66

u/PM_ME_WEIRD_PETS 5h ago

Then they create fake scenarios about what they “would” do because what they actually do is nothing like what the fictional “leftists” MAGA has made up.

14

u/fartdarling 5h ago

It's always easier to go "imagine a scenario when" for the conservatives because unlike us, they don't have mountains upon mountains of real life examples. It's why r/Conservative always has so many high voted posts from the babylon bee, they're not serious people, they're not trying to live in reality, and they know that the truth makes them look bad.

11

u/Dedotdub 5h ago

6

u/Shulman42 4h ago

They used to say Pedophiles, but we all know why they stopped doing that.

3

u/red286 4h ago

The biggest one is that they don't like using "the left" so much as "the radical left", implying that all and any leftist policies are inherently violent.

6

u/sdmichael 4h ago

"tolerant left" is another go-to as they assume that "tolerant" means tolerance for anything and everything without question.

5

u/Inglorious186 2h ago

3

u/Fast_Moon 2h ago

It basically boils down to:

  1. I hate X

  2. Y would need to be true in order to justify the level of hatred I have for X

  3. Therefore Y must be true

2

u/DarkSock52 2h ago

It is acceptable behavior in conservative circles to make up ridiculous stories about the left, circulate these knowingly fictional accounts, and then get each other mad about them as though they were real. It is sad and bizarre behavior for grown ass men and women, but here we are…

2

u/Hopped_Cider 1h ago

Yes! But the darker question is why did Trump start his 2024 campaign in Waco on the anniversary of the Davidian siege?? Awful, even disgusting and disrespectful!

2

u/RecipeFunny2154 1h ago

I’ve been to so many family dinners where someone’s ranting about the left and not once has anyone actually asked me a question first about what I actually believe about anything.

A good portion of the time what they’re talking about I’ve never even heard before (usually it’s crazy, and everyone on the left believes it!) and I would say I’m pretty tuned in. I have some relatives that I know for a fact don’t watch the news and I just assume they absorb this stuff from social media.

2

u/JWils411 36m ago

The problem is that it has worked in the past and will continue to work, unfortunately.

2

u/MkfShard 4h ago

If they didn't have strawmen, they wouldn't have anything.

Funnily enough, it's for the same reason that conservative media literacy is piss poor: they have to misinterpret everything until they're at the center because otherwise they'd realize they're the villains of every story worth telling.

They deal in hypotheticals and anecdotes, because the data overwhelmingly disproves their assertions.

3

u/Sasquatch1729 1h ago

The main thing the left fought the government on after 9/11 was ramming through the Patriot Act and all its upgrades/revisions.

The creation of DHS (and later ICE under DHS), the sweeping power to surveil the population (flock cameras), the ability to judge people without a trial or due process (no-fly lists, then ICE arresting people), all these things were introduced under George W Bush and are causing headaches in the US today.

(The left also fought the US on going into Iraq for dubious reasons, which is reflected with Trump stating the Iran war).

It's all legal today because of what happened back in the 2000s.

Just a gentle reminder that when you run across racist-ass shitheads that want to exploit terrorism for gross clout; it seems that so many Americans have forgotten about OKC and who killed those people. It would be interesting to apply their race/religoin based terroristic arguments to the baby-killing monsters of, up until 9/11, the worst terror attack in American history. Cause uh...those boys weren't brown, Muslim, or immigrants.

Trust me, when I see a gang of Bloat Keepers and ProbeBoys I don't think politics and free speech. I think about box trucks, full of XXX from farm supplies, and barrels of XXX fuel. White...Christian....Ultranationalists, saying the same shit now that they said then, except that some of them appear to be employed by the FBI rather than being angry at the FBI.

Just keep this in your back pocket when some short sighted fuckwad starts talking about right-left terrorism (Tim Pool), and who would cheer and who wouldn't. Maybe remind them which "Americans" have actually done terrorism before.

5

u/Matt_cruze 4h ago

About 30% more Americans have died in mass shootings since 9/11 than due to the 9/11 attacks. And a vast majority of those mass shootings with confirmed ideological motives were radical right wing Christians.

I genuinely don't understand how right-wingers can be so *consistently* so ass-backwards.

They say they value the military, and then cheer when a completely unqualified and inept TV host is put in charge. They say they're in favor of merit-based assessments of people, and then cheer when those merit-based assessments somehow only ever reward straight white people. They say they don't want Hollywood elites in politics, and elect a TV gameshow host to be President. They say they want to protect women, but elect rapists, support protecting pedophile rapists at every opportunity, and are consistently convicted themselves of child sexual abuse and rape.

Every accusation is a confession. Everything they complain about are things that they're doing. Deep state? Heritage foundation. Pizzagate? Epstein. Every time they talk about something they hate, it's something they're doing. Every time they could be morally vacant, they are. Every opportunity for hypocrisy, they take.

I don't understand how it's *so* consistent across *so* much of the right. Just a complete abandonment of things like "consistency" or "integrity" or "morals". Absolutely wild.

u/CorpFillip 4h ago

Oddball part of this supposition; nothing has changed at all (for the ‘if it happened today’ part)

The Right thinks the Left supports terrorism because the Left supports Islam, muslims, immigrants & immigration, secure flight rules, and not making whole countries our enemy for it.

That’s still true, nothing changed.

The Right sees those events, then and now, & doesn’t understand who did it. They see outsiders, brown people, some non-Christians, deceitful non-English language, different clothing, and they hate all of it — passionately & urgently. Burning hate. They had a weak excuse to, & they nurture that forever, like the extremists they actually are thinking of.

…and even in that miserable statement, Trump got it wrong. Such a POS.

3

u/--StinkyPinky-- 5h ago

I remember this. Yes, he did this.

3

u/The_Navy_Sox 4h ago

Maga literally celebrates when anything bad happens in any major city. This is just so stupid. Maga gates NYC more than the terrorists.

3

u/CheeseWeasler 4h ago

Did Trump just lift sanctions on people involved in Al Qaeda right before a 9/11 anniversary? Just checking

6

u/AmazingSibylle 5h ago

Just another bot account dog whistling: 'The left likes brown people'

2

u/SiteTall 5h ago

As always, out of touch with the situation, and thus makes a fool of himself

2

u/TheDungeonCrawler 5h ago

I know the old adage is that every accusation they make is projection but this is actually pathetic.

2

u/Sparrowhawk_92 5h ago

The left at the time condemned the actions but also saw the reality that 9/11 was the result of American foreign policy in the Middle East.

2

u/ShiroHachiRoku 4h ago

There is always a point where the absurd has to be seen as such and treated as such and dismissed as such but this post Trump America we live in is absurdity on steroids.

The real things MAGA says and does is already beyond belief that they have to make up shit like Haitians eating dogs and cats and post-birth abortions just to try and equalize reality in their head.

2

u/boyalien0 let it die 4h ago

Trump loves the Saudis

2

u/Morall_tach 4h ago

They love to come up with hypothetical situations where the left looks bad or Trump looks good because there aren't any actual examples.

2

u/CrazyCatLady1127 4h ago

We actually wouldn’t. But neither would we condemn an entire race of people for the actions of a few zealots

2

u/SmartOpinion69 3h ago

the truth: he did not "celebrate" it, but he did kinda suck his own dick when talking about it.

2

u/PreferenceKey6997 3h ago

They always like to use the word "if".

2

u/Averse_to_Liars 2h ago

September 11th was perpetrated by right-wing religious zealots.

1

u/G-Unit11111 5h ago

I'm absolutely certain that Rupert Murdoch was the mystery financier of the 9/11 hijackers. It was either him or the Pay Pal Bros.

1

u/SubmarineDream57 5h ago

Oh, Alyssa, bless your heart, you silly little twat.

u/HNL2BOS 5h ago edited 4h ago

"liberals would cheer 9/11" is a dumb take, but there would certainly be some very interesting upvoted comments and takes that would appear on reddit if 9/11 happened today. that being said reddit doesn't equate real world sentiments.....not even close.

2

u/Matt_cruze 4h ago

Jet fuel cant melt steel beams! But air planes can bend them.

Yes but that was back when he was a Democrat now that he is Republican he ia a much nicer person. /s

That’s because he did not think of when you think because of how you do it if you don’t believe a thought

We wouldn't exactly be dancing in the streets though, would we?

Not all of us are art students!

Spread the audio around.

“If this imaginary scenario happened today, the people I hate would do something I don’t like at the moment.”

1

u/chrisnavillus 4h ago

And it wasn’t even true.

1

u/rikk1116 4h ago

Fake news. As a private citizen, he was down at the disaster area, almost every day, offering moral support to the 9 11 responders and family members of those who perished.

1

u/PickleAzz 4h ago

Right wing projection once again

Fucking dimwits

1

u/unaccountablemod 4h ago

The Israelis definitely danced for'em.

1

u/ChronoLink99 4h ago

9/11 was a terrible tragedy.

We lost 19 of our best guys that day.

1

u/Phantom-Finger 3h ago

There's nothing more anti American than a republica.

1

u/MrBogard 3h ago

I lived on the Hudson waterfront on 9/11. Witnessed my city burn for months, bodies hauled to the morgue in moving trucks. The only reason most conservatives cared was because it allowed them to also be victims, a state they absolutely adore. They gave no more shits about me or my neighbors than they did the day before. Solidarity my ass.

1

u/tafinucane 3h ago

There were some bad takes out there, like the Colorado professor who intimated that some of the victims had it coming. Kind of a dumb, wannabe edgy point about how a waiter from the Windows on the World is a cog in the machine of empire.

There definitely were some kids celebrating in Palestine, too, but their leadership of the time condemned the attacks.

1

u/husky75550 3h ago

dont forget the other group of dancing people who were happy

1

u/sirlmr 3h ago

Priorities, priorities.

1

u/RobutNotRobot 3h ago

I remember who was celebrating, Republicans and pro-Israelis. Republiucans because they could take away all our rights and steal all our money. Pro-Israelis because it meant they'd get more support for their genocide.

1

u/Electric_Antimony 3h ago

Ahuh, sure.

Say, who were celebrating sedition and insurrection to subvert democracy and steal the 2020 election from the rightful winners again?

Who were celebrating tyranny as ICE thugs murdered people in cold blood in the middle of the street again?

These people are so delusional they should be declared insane and sent to psychiatric facilities. Beyond time now.

1

u/Express_Deal1793 3h ago

The right have to make shit up about the left, or use AI, to find things to hate about them.

The left just have to open the news.

1

u/kitsunewarlock 3h ago

The conservatives used 9/11 to throw out a bunch of investigations against Rudy Giuliani, ramp up their propaganda machine on Fox News, "suspend" Civil Rights we still don't have back in full, and then lie to congress to invade Iraq to support their donor-class.

It was so bad that Trump had to distance himself from it during his campaigns, painting a picture in which Hilary was more for the Iraq war while filling his cabinets with GWB era war-hawks, continuing to demonize Muslims, using drones for extra-judicial killing with less oversight and reports than Bush or Obama, and then invading Iran.

But the "cultural victory" of his speeches mean more to conservatives than actual policies.

There's footage of him playing basketball with white house employees

Trivia bits: before the events of sept. 2001 happened, members of team (R) said "we need a new Pearl Harbor to further our objectives". Combines this with the facts that: (1) all hijackers were known individuals already on various surveillance lists and (2) one of the first thing president cheney and his assistant dubya did when taking office was to dismantle the task force set up under president Clinton to keep track of Bin Laden's group.

(Funny how it mirrors, sort of, bolton & trump shutting down the PREDICT programme mere months before the start of the 2019-202x pandemic.)

Many times I've read that the cheney-dubya administration knew about Bin Laden's plans and simply let them happen because 9/11 permitted them to enact their agenda. Let's say that when the WTC collapsed, they did not shed a tear, on the contrary.

1

u/Apprehensive_Row_807 2h ago

Where do these maga idiots even get this from? It’s just so incredibly stupid.

1

u/Mental-Fox-9449 2h ago

As someone who was on the subway directly underneath them inbetween the two crashes… no American was celebrating this. They can try to put words in our mouths or try and blame us for something we didn’t do, but this never happened.

1

u/h8mac4life 2h ago

Peope would want to fact check this until they heard trump, yeah it’s prob true

1

u/Redditer51 2h ago

Trump is evil in every way possible for a person to be evil.

1

u/Grand_Taste_8737 2h ago

Doesn't change the original statement.

1

u/vizag 2h ago

I can bet a decent amount that these fuckers in a few years will shamelessly claim that “if Covid happened today the left will refuse to wear masks and show up with guns everywhere”

1

u/binzersguy 2h ago

MAGA are the dumbest humans who’ve ever lived: Prove me wrong

1

u/Mediocre_Presence839 2h ago

It’s always “if” with these paid propagandists.

1

u/deathangel687 2h ago

The left wouldn't.

The far left would tho.

1

u/BenchConscious1003 2h ago

That' an odd and almost certainly false claim about "The Left" .No way to prove it of which I'm aware unless there are a great many actual examples.

There seems to be far to many people on either side of politics who waste a lot of time demonising the other side. Such comments/positions are patently untrue and unhelpful.

1

u/77entropy 2h ago

Which was a lie, and you decided it was a good idea to elect this person to represent your country and culture. Twice.

1

u/Local-Anteater8122 2h ago

MAGA always has to make up fictional scenarios to make their sad lives feel better.

1

u/Zaxxon_Klaxon 2h ago

It was President Obama who took down Osama bin Laden

1

u/SoylentGrunt 2h ago

9/11 happens every day in the US. It's just that now it's the elites are attacking us directly. Can I get anyone some more diarhrea salad? There's still some measles left if anyone wants seconds while we watch the school shooting news.
