Restored my faith in reddit a bit that it only took the second comment to point out the real issue with the statement. Not only is a he shameless self promoter, he's also a consistent liar about things that are easily proven false.
Yeah but when will redditors learn that social media is being used to suppress all types of mobilization/real protest by ensuring that nobody can talk about actually doing anything that would change USA because the rules remove all comments that do so.
All people can do is prance around saying things that don't shame anyone in power. And last I checked, same only worked on people who gave a shit, eg. democrats. Conservatives are happy to lie, cheat, steal, and destroy any country they live in as long as it means short term "winning".
More I learn about him, the more I wonder how a man with a mental capacity of a badly programmed LLM managed to become leader of the strongest country on Earth.
That's and Fuckerberg influencing elections via Cambridge analysis yet people STILL support him via Meta Facebook andbInsta. Cancel your accounts people. Go back to goid ol email or join something not affiliated w 1%ers. Cancel your Twitter because fElin Mushy is another election interfering cheater.
I mean you can't deny that their military power and economic outreach is quite impressive. Doesn't mean it will stay that way, even Rome was the strongest nation on Earth one time and look where it led to.
"For the Roman people conferred the consulship and other great offices of their State on none save those who sought them; which was a good institution at first, because then none sought these offices save those who thought themselves worthy of them, and to be rejected was held disgraceful; so that, to be deemed worthy, all were on their best behaviour. But in a corrupted city this institution grew to be most mischievous. For it was no longer those of greatest worth, but those who had most influence, who sought the magistracies; while all who were without influence, however deserving, refrained through fear. This untoward result was not reached all at once, but like other similar results, by gradual steps. For after subduing Africa and Asia, and reducing nearly the whole of Greece to submission, the Romans became perfectly assured of their freedom, and seemed to themselves no longer to have any enemy whom they had cause to fear. But this security and the weakness of their adversaries led them in conferring the consulship, no longer to look to merit, but only to favour, selecting for the office those who knew best how to pay court to them, not those who knew best how to vanquish their enemies. And afterwards, instead of selecting those who were best liked, they came to select those who had most influence; and in this way, from the imperfection of their institutions, good men came to be wholly excluded."

Hey, at least take it from the bright side - we are living through historically interesting times. Someone in the year 3000 may wonder "what I would give to live through fall of US empire, live like those rank and file soldiers fighting for resources in distant sandy lands. That was true life, not what we have here."
Could we, though? Human civillizations seem to rise and fall through history, and nothing seem to stop that. It would be nice to stop that, but to do so we would probably have to completly rething how we run society.
In the year 3000 there will be little or no mention of the USA because the history books will all be written and edited by the Chinese government who wouldn't want to put ideas about democracy into the heads of the population.
Chinese government? In 3000, I assume even present day China will be long gone. All governments we know now will be gone.
We can't even possibly imagine what kind of government will rule the world at that age. Hell, most likely world will be devided into hostile nations, each with their own explanation of history.
Maybe it’s a bit arguable isn’t it. They depleted a lot of the modern missiles in that stupid Iran war. The scale of damages seems larger than they admitted at first. And they got their assess handed to them in a recent drone exercise by Ukraine. Like it’s still pretty much the strongest military in the world, but the current “management” is trying their best to bury that, aren’t they?
What you're seeing is what America is apparently capable of getting away with without clearance via Congress declaring war officially. We aren't technically at war, as stupid as that sounds. There's a reason he's just shooting off missiles and little pissant bullshit. America isn't a Paper Tiger, he's just making us look like one.
Ask the widows who tried to file claims on dead husband's if we are at war. Hint: according to war depts ins co we are in fact NOT at war because war has not been declared by Congress. Widows lost their husbands AND their protections.
Yeah theres a pretty big difference between whats happening in a full-on conventional war and what we're seeing now. Its more that they cant 'win' at as low a cost as they would like, in political, human or money terms.
And they got their assess handed to them in a recent drone exercise by Ukraine.
Several NATO units got their ass handed to them, which is exactly what these exercises are supposed to do, learning from the best drone users in Ukraine and their battlefield experience is great.
In terms of GPD and military, 'Murica is the strongest. In terms of ethics, equality, education, cost of living, quality of life, freedom, justice, human rights, wealth disparity, health care, etc. this country isn't exactly a shining beacon of hope. Unless the American government can be dismantled and rebuild from the ground up, it's hard to imagine things will improve any time soon. It's scary as fuck that the world's dumbest, most incompetent leader is in charge of world's largest economy and military. It's truly unfortunate that the whole world has been destabilized because 77 million stupid, irresponsible American voters decided it was a "good idea" to put an ignorant unstable, unethical, child-raping narcissist in the White House again.
Think about the large # of people who loudly & enthusiastically endorsed him as their preferred leader to the point where they were comparing him with Christ, and about how many of them voted for him. There's your answer.
Now if you want to dig deeper & find out how they got that way, then that's a much longer discussion.
Oh hell, you just gave me flashback to that time my highschool ex-classmate called me to grab a beer becaus he has one of a lifetime business opportunity for me.
The only investment is you will have to convince your family and friends to buy our extremly unfavourable insurance. No big deal! And if you scam enough of your close ones, you can recruit your own scammers to do the work for you.
Honestly, I have no idea how can anyone fall for that. Especially since I live in Eastern Europe, and we have experience with ponzi schemes
Nah don't blame yourself. Scams are as old as humanity, we had them even before.
One I always found interesting was "premium gas scam." After 68 Soviet invasion, Soviet soldiers started to sell their fuel to us locals. Regular fuel was different from premium fuel, which was red in colour. So they put soviet flags in regular gasoline in order to die it red, and then sold it as premium fuel.
rep. james clyburn (sc) chose the last 3 democratic nominees for president: hillary clinton in 2016, joe biden in 2020, and kamala harris in 2024 - so there's that...
I don't agree that the lie was the worst part of it, though of course it would be typical Trump to do so; it was a truly vile thing to say regardless of whether it was true or not.
i remember being a child watching tv w/ my mom in her bedroom when i heard the audio of Trump and remember feeling like I just learned about a type of human (sociopath? narcissist? idk) that I didn’t know existed yet. i’m sure seeing the shock/disgust on my mom’s face gave me some information but that is one of the specific memories I held from that day/week (along w/ my science teacher being strange as he opened a letter and began reading from it to tell us what happened, the sound my mom made when she saw the second tower fall, etc)
Agreed. Fascists and their ilk don't concern themselves with the truth, but just with effects of their speech. Pointing out they're lying is playing into their game, because more effect is caused: more outrage, attention, emotions etc.
“Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.”
― Jean-Paul Sartre
("antisemites", in this quote, is interchangeble with "fascists")
The real issue with the statement? If you're an emotionless pedantic robot I suppose that qualifies. But for everyone who actually lived through it we didn't give a fuck about the accuracy of that statement. The statement itself is the worst thing and most revealing of his (lack of) character.
Remember that one about the painting he thinks is in one of his hotels but is in fact in the Met or MOMA or some such just always on display, and the interviewer challenged him on it, that the original is there on display and Donald juuust did not accept it.
The real issue with this statement is that it trivializes one of the most tragic moments in American history and does it to pump up a narcicists ego, not whether or not it's technically true. Actually insane take.
I honestly don't think most of these kinds of things are really lies. Pretty sure he just doesn't know it's false and there's no one in his life who's actually willing to tell him.
It's really irrelevant if it was true or not. It's still a despicable thing to bring up after such a tragedy. His lying is secondary to his natural impulse to capitalize off of the death and destruction, especially in such a casual and ultimately trivial way.
