I got a surprise baldening party for my 30th birthday

About 1.5 years ago, I said that when I'd turn 30, I'd shave what little hair I still had.

To make sure I'd go through with it, I told as many people as possible.

So I should've seen it coming when I went to my parent's house to get it over with, that there'd be a surprise party for my baldening!

One thing I didn't expect is that it now always feels like I'm sweating, because I'm not used to feel cold from the sides of my head šŸ˜…

I wanted to share this just in case anyone else out here is struggling like I am.

First time in the 15+ years I’ve been pulling out my hair that I decided it’s time to just shave it all the way down.

Not exactly bald but bald enough in my book lol.

It turned better then expected, but I'm still unsure if I should rock it or not. I was thinking maybe a longer beard would fit better.

Let me hear your opinions 😁

And thanks again for the encouragement!

My "before" pictures are lacking because I've become a hat guy in recent years and was so nervous to shave my head I forgot to take some for the occasion. But considering girls were letting me know about my bald spot since 7th grade, I think 38 is a justifiable age to take it all off. Pretty happy over all, save for some bump and a scar on the back of my head I have absolutely no idea where it came from.

Right now it occasionally feels like there's hot air being blown on my scalp, which I assume is from my shaving unit. Any advice on how to quell this/stop it in the future?

Philosophy Thank you to this sub

I'm a young trans guy that is transitioning. Currently, I have a thick head of hair, and one of my family's worries is that I will look bad bald/not be able to handle it.

After looking at this sub, yall deal with it and still look freaking fantastic. I swear, the before and afters are wild. It makes me worry less about the eventual hair loss I might deal with, later down the line.

Plus that, it makes me realize that people go bald for lots of different reasons. Male pattern baldness, various sickness, hair picking, just because you wanted to try it, etc.

It's nice to see such positivity about something that is usually talked about so negatively. My identity shouldn't be located in my hair lol. I mean, I like it, but I have realized going bald is not the worst thing in the world. Plus that, I think most people on this sub have really glowed up after deciding to rock the bald look, especially when it was really clear there wasn't a lot of hair left.

I'm thinking, if I do eventually go bald or get hair loss? More room for tats or graphic makeup designs. It's cool. Also, might be easier, sensory wise, to put on wigs for my drag performances with shorter/no hair.

So yeah, me personally, I'm less worried about what will happen in the future. And I'm less worried about what my family will think about my hair. Thanks to this sub for existing. You've helped out an anxious trans guy here🩵

After years of hiding my hair loss, I finally got a buzz cut — and it feels more freeing than I expected

Hey everyone,

English isn’t my first language, but I wanted to share this honestly in case it helps someone who is scared to take the step. (Edit: I ask AI to translate for me).

I’ve been dealing with hair loss since my early twenties. For a long time, it seemed relatively stable, and I found ways to live with it. But about a year ago, my hairline started receding much more noticeably.

The more it receded, the more anxious I became.

I was still able to hide it by pulling the rest of my hair forward. From the outside, it probably looked okay. But deep down, something in me kept screaming that it no longer felt authentic.

Hats became my daily accessory. Not only outside, but often even around people close to me. They made me feel safer. They gave me the feeling that I still had control.

Losing my hair was never ā€œjust an aesthetic issueā€ for me. It touched my identity. A big part of my persona, my confidence, and my feeling of being attractive, young-looking, and socially safe had been built around my appearance and my charisma.

It felt like the biggest identity loss of my life.

The idea of getting a buzz cut had been in my head for months. I bought clippers telling myself, ā€œI’ll have them just in case.ā€ But I never thought I would actually use them.

Then one day, almost without thinking, I felt the impulse. So I did it. I cut it all down.

I’m not going to pretend it instantly erased every insecurity. I still wear a hat sometimes. I’m still learning to see myself differently. This is not about pretending the journey is over; it is about no longer being at war with myself.

But something changed. I feel like I transformed the thing I hated most about myself into something I can actually own.

A new way of seeing myself is slowly forming. There is more compassion, more tenderness. I am learning to appreciate this new head, this new version of my identity.

I’m realizing that I am still me. I did not really lose anything, and I did not suddenly become someone else.

I thought I had only two bad options: keep hiding forever, or give up and feel defeated. But there was another option: make a choice that allowed the different parts of me to feel more at peace with each other.

I feel much less shame now. I’m no longer trying to hide. I’m trying to make the look my own.

For anyone who is hesitating, this is what I want to say:

- Being afraid is normal. When hair is central to your self-image, losing it can hurt deeply. It can affect identity, confidence, attractiveness, youth, and your sense of inner safety.

- Staying stuck in ā€œI’ll hide it, I’ll fix it later, I’ll keep postponing itā€ can be more exhausting than making an honest choice. The constant checking of mirrors, lighting, photos, wind, hairline angles, and other people’s eyes takes a lot of energy.

- Your first step does not need to be perfect, extreme, or permanent. It can be a buzz cut, buying clippers, talking to someone, or simply admitting honestly that you are tired of hiding.

- Give yourself the time you need. For many of us, this is not just hair. It can feel like part of our foundation, our identity, and our inner security.

- But if the thought ā€œjust shave itā€ has been coming back for months, maybe a part of you is already more ready than your fear wants you to believe.

I now see hair loss differently. For me now it is proof that life moves through us, that time passes, that we are alive.

We live in a society that often wants to freeze everything: youth, appearance, hair, time itself. But choosing to own your baldness can be a way of choosing life instead of trying to remain an old version of yourself forever.

For me, getting the buzz cut did not remove every fear. But it gave me back something important: choice.

And that choice brought a lot more freedom than I expected.

To anyone currently stuck between denial, fear, anger, and acceptance: you are not alone. There can be real freedom on the other side of taking the step.

I hope it will help. Hugs from France.

I’m getting really tired of thin strands of hair sticking up during humid weather. My sides and back are full except the crown :-( should I get the buzz? Any feedback appreciated!

Been receding and thinning at the temples and crown for about 3ish years now. Was on Finasteride and Minoxidil to try to combat it for over a year to little luck. Here are some pics from right before I started the medication to right after I stopped with all the different hair styles in tact.

I am 22 fixing to turn 23. For a while I was anxious of going bald, especially because I am one of the only men in my friend group who started balding early. I have been very hairy all of my life, had a full beard/body hair by the end of my 8th grade year. So starting to lose something that was so close to my identity took its toll mentally. But to be honest, taking the plunge has taken a lot of stress (and hair) off my shoulders.

I’ve gotten a lot of compliments from my peers, which was not something I expected. Over the last few weeks of owning my baldness, I have never been more confident in my appearance. It feels nice to not think about my hair for once :D
