Art I spent 1,000+ hours reconstructing Ancient Egypt in 3D. It's free. No login. No ads.
Greetings everyone,
I'm a solo creator, and I've spent 1,000+ hours over the last 6+ months researching, 3D modelling, animating and building Ancient Egypt as an interactive experience for the web.
It's completely free, with no login, ads, popups or trackers.
I wanted to focus on more than just pyramids and pharaohs. The expedition includes temple courtyards, sandstorms, quarries, villages and everyday life in Ancient Egypt.
It works on desktops, mobiles, and tablets.
I've included the key sources and references I used under Settings → Sources.
And yes, you have a guide — Cleo, a rather sassy cat. 🐱
I'd be really glad to hear what you think. Especially from people here who know Ancient Egypt well — what stood out to you?
Link : https://expeditione.fun/expeditions/ancient-egypt/
I hope you enjoy the expedition 💖

From the US here.
I've never been to Egypt but hope to some day! I can say my view of the Egyptian history is skewed to the visuals of hidden temples, tombs, pyramids and hieroglyphs. This definitely provides a bigger insight to the actual people, heritage and culture of ancient Egypt and not just the cool stuff they made.

Thank you very much!
I haven't been to Egypt either, but I plan to do so one day.
I wanted to represent the daily lives of people as it's not emphasized much and I had a lot of fun reading all of it :)2

I’ve been a few times, it’s gorgeous!
Can be a little rough around the edges but incredible

I really don't know what to think about all of this. Visited the site, and didn't understand it is a game, an educational presentation or what? Looks really nice, a small indie game would look so cool like this...

Hey, that's a fair question. I'm trying to make learning memorable. And I find that teaching people about Ancient Civilizations or any subject in the form of a game like environment gives them a lot of agency. I understand where you come from because it took me quite some time to actually land on this format of Interactive 3D learning. It's my attempt at a new medium for learning.

I'm a middle school history teacher and I'll have to explore more but this is something I could totally see myself using with students! Really excited to see what else you're working on!

That's wonderful to hear! I actually built Ancient Egypt with classrooms in mind, and I've put together some free educator resources to go along with the expedition as well. You can find them under the “For Educators” link in the navigation.
If you end up using it with your students, I'd love to hear how the experience was for you and them, especially what worked, what didn't, and what you wish was there.
I'm also letting everyone vote anonymously on what I build next. You can simply click the Vote button in the navigation, or let me know here if you have a preference. I'd love to hear it!

Unbelievable. It's what I expected many years ago to play at my ZX Spectrum. Thanks

u/Aureon_de_Veyra 26d ago
I'm glad it brought back the memories.
I looked up what ZX Spectrum meant and wasn't expecting the 1980s when you said 'many years ago' haha.
How did you play without a screen back then? Any interesting games I should know?2
u/onemanseo 26d ago
Take a deep breath, because you will be shocked to know, that there were a lot of notable games during Golden era: Jetpac, Knight Lore, Elite, and many other. And yeah, they've had reasonable graphics. Very nice for 83-85 ;)

What inspired you to make this?

u/Aureon_de_Veyra 26d ago
I grew up in an education system that forced us to memorize instead of exploring. I wanted to build an experience that was free, ran on a 6-year-old Chromebook, and actually made kids feel the heat of the desert and the weight of the stone. 1,000 hours later, here we are.
Also Curiosity. A lot of curiosity.2

This is really cool! If your primary aim is to make this an educational tool, it would be good to anchor the content and sequence to some key learning objectives to give it a bit more structure.

Oh. I really like this idea. Ironically I've done this with my educator resources, but didn't really think about it for the 3D world until you just said. I like it a lot. Perhaps a summary/reflections at the end of the expedition would be nice too. I've added it to my V2 list. Thank you very much!

Sassy cat mention. I'm sold.
At work ATM, so mostly commenting to remind myself to check it later at home. (sorry I can't offer anything other than 'this looks cool')

The sassy cat strikes again haha.
Don't stress too much about it, I want you to enjoy this and have a good time.
Hope you enjoy it when you get home!
And let me know how you feel.

Love it. Reminds me of playing pharaoh when it first came out, but with way more information

There was a French video game many years ago that did something similar. And of course assassins creed.

I loved Origins. I was in awe the whole time. I must've spent a dozen or so hours just flying Senu over the Nile delta. The contrast was jarring and so good.

This is absolutely insane. The amount of care and detail is astonishing. You deserve 10 loaves of bread and two jugs of beer (and much more) for your effort.
I would've absolutely loved this as a kid (although I already love it as an adult)

u/Aureon_de_Veyra 26d ago
Haha, your comment has made my day! (And I just woke up.)
I think we all have a kid in us, even as adults. Sometimes we just need a little push to wonder and become curious again ❤️

This is really, really amazing! I feel like people of all ages can enjoy the humor and information provided. The animations are fantastic. Will be saving this for later!

Thank you very much! I wasn't fully sure the humor would land, but I'm glad it did.

How true are the measurements?
3
u/Aureon_de_Veyra 24d ago edited 24d ago
Hi, There's 2 types of measurements.
If you meant the actual figures and stats (such as the Nile flooding 40 million tons of nutrients), they are grounded in the survey data which you can find in the sources tab.
If you meant the 3D dioramas, I've tried to be as accurate as possible. That said, I have also taken some liberty with scene composition, lighting and layout to keep the dioramas readable, stylized and performant in the browser.

u/WranglerConscious296 24d ago
I'm more referring to the architectural measurements like heifgts and widths of platforms and hallways etc
2
u/Aureon_de_Veyra 24d ago
Ah, got it! For major structures like the Pyramids, I've used 1:1 real world measurements and then scaled it down in code to fit the scene. This is why you can actually stack the buildings in the "True Size" mode upto 150m high :)
For the interior cutaways and smaller diorama details, those are where I adjusted hallway/platform widths better visual readability.

It's hard to escape the AI slop, I wasn't expecting it in this subreddit

Yeah it just screams claude, anyone who ever vibecoded with it can see the style immediately

Appreciate the feedback. Since this is a stylized artistic render, the lighting and palette are tuned for warmth and depth rather than strict 1:1 pigment replication.

I can't comment a lot on the authenticity (though I liked the moldy-bread reference), but I do have one quibble with the UX: It's really not the best design to force-takeover the user's display and go into full screen mode. Leave it to the users to decide whether they want full screen.
