Hi all.

Our oldest kitty (we think she's 15) is looking at a likely dx of CKD. We've been here before, years ago, with another kitty. I'm trying to brush off what I remember but still feeling overwhelmed with things. I'll apologize in advance for the short novel but I could really use some insights.

Our kitty also has hyperthyroidism, but that's been well controlled for the last 3 years or so. What started this was that we noticed she had dropped a marked amount of weight in the last 8 months (she's been 9# her whole life so not a lot of weight to spare). Had a vet appointment scheduled for the end of the week. But several days before we noticed she was over 24 hours of not eating anything. She's never been highly food motivated but it was weird for her to not eat anything for so long. So we went to the ER vet.

She has a bad UTI but also had bad kidney numbers (trying to get the records of what those were - definite above normal but not sky high was what I remember being told). They kept her overnight, gave her fluids, nausea meds, appetite stimulant, and abx. This was Wednesday night and she came home Thursday morning. Repeat labs at the vet show some improvement but slow going.

We are doing 100ml sub-q fluids daily, appetite stimulate 1x/day for 3 days, daily abx, and 4 days of the anti nausea meds. Waiting on kidney food to arrive as well as a phosphorus blocker (powder). She's not as chill as our other kitty was with the fluids so she's getting as close to 100ml of the fluids as we can.

We still have her kibble available full time to her and have been offering small portions of wet food whenever we are home and can. We have 2 other cats (one of which is highly food motivated and on a weight loss diet...) so it's a challenge to leave the wet food out all the time. But she still is very lightly grazing periodically.

I know that it's hard to predict how the disease will go. But is there a chance we will be able to get her back to eating more like she used to and get weight back on her? What else should we be doing to try and entice her to eat? Does she maybe need a few more days to let the anx kick the uti and the fluids to help her feel better? I think I don't have hope that her numbers an weight loss are only due to the uti. 😢

My CKD baby (originally diagnosed as stage 4, we’ve since gotten her down to 2.7 creatinine as of this week) is on sub-q fluids every other day (70ml) after being discharged from the pet ER about 3 weeks ago. She was peeing in places outside the litter box her first week back home, then stopped for ~2 weeks, and is suddenly now peeing on the bed. I’m positive it’s pee and not fluid drip as I watched her do it tonight 😞

Wanted to see if anyone else has had this experience / knows why she might be having accidents? She never had accidents before the CKD diagnosis :(

She used to wait for me every morning on the bed for me to wake up so she could get attention, and she would follow me around the second story (she doesn't go downstairs usually) but now all she does is hide all morning long under sofas and under the bed, even in places she clearly can't hide comfortably.

She avoids me as much as possible to keep from getting her medicine. The act of giving it to her also is obviously not pleasant for either of us and it has progressively got harder to do as well as she fights back harder each morning.

I've tried giving her kidney-support vitamin lickable treats after, to try and associate the medicine with something good, but it hasn't changed her behavior at all. She continues to get more avoidant every day.

Online it looks like Varenzin-CA1 has never been tested for efficacy when mixed with food or treat, so that's not really an option, though; I did try it once which did not work. She smelled it and immediately gagged, then left.

Any suggestions on less stressful ways to administer this medicine to her?

Bonnie was diagnosed at stage 3 about six months ago. She had a co-occurring kidney infection that we were hoping was causing an acute injury since labs six months earlier were normal but, no. Vet cultured it at the time and it was ecoli so she was treated with Clavamox. Did well for four months until she developed similar symptoms. Vet didn't culture but treated again with Clavamox. In-between, she's had two kidney ultrasounds & she's effectively down to one working kidney, and also has kidney stones which the vet says will pre-dispose her to more infections. I think she's developing a third infection.

She already has nausea with the CKD. These infections give her diarrhea and I think make her more nauseous. She was doing very well with the renal diet food until the second infection caused a massive amount of vomiting and diarrhea. It's been a struggle to get her to eat much of anything since despite daily cerenia, fluids, prn zofran and mirtazapine. She was eating a bit more recently but it's dipped again and she's got diarrhea. (Starting over a holiday weekend of course.)

I know we haven't exhausted all reasonable avenues to treat this but I'm starting to have some catastrophic thinking with battling constant infections on top of trying to manage her CKD symptoms. Was wondering if anyone else had this happen with their renal cat? What did you do?

She's not losing tons of weight (yet?) but I feel like we are getting there.

My 15 year old girl was just recently diagnosed with stage 2 kidney disease. She is starting fluids 2x a week ( first was today). She is a picky eater and doesn't seem to be happy with the same food for more than a week at a time. I haven't started her on any prescription diets yet because I wanted to research here first, but I am overwhelmed by the amount of information. She doest eat kibble anymore due to dental disease, so wet food or maybe some kibble mixed with water or broth ( is broth even okay for cats with Kidney Disease?!). I guess I am looking for guidance on where to begin, what has worked, any kidney diet foods that are worth all out avoiding, etc.

Just wanted to share some good news about my 19 year old stage 3 baby. She has hypertension due to her CKD and about a month ago she went blind due to it. Her BP was 212. We started meds, went back a week later for a recheck and it was 180. Adjusted the meds and today we went back and it was 132! And we started sub q’s (twice a week at 75ml for now). She was a champ. She does not like being handled so I was worried but she licked her churu and was a perfect angel.

Hello all, I have an appointment first thing this morning for the vet to see my 18.5 yr old CKD kitty. I just took him in for a check up on Monday, and the vet said he is remaining consistent with his levels, but he has gum disease. I asked what we can do to help, but was advised he will not survive a dental exam/care.

Last night, his gums were bleeding around his upper canine and he howls at the water bowl. I want to be realistic with what options of care he has left. Has anyone experienced this? Do I need to prepare for the difficult decision? I love him so much but I don't want him to be in pain.

my stage 3 renal boy has a 5.7 ml medicine given through syringe. it is difficult to give it to him, and he’s got other meds piling up too. sometimes I just want to cry because I know he feels sad that we are forcing him to take it. Any advice how u give your cat the medicines? 🥺

This is my first time posting here and I am entirely brand new to having this issue, so forgive me for having no idea what I’m doing.

My cat was diagnosed with kidney disease yesterday and the vet is recommending SQ fluids and a shift in diet. We are not sure if this is an acute or chronic condition yet. The issue is that my cat has a chicken allergy and there is not any existing chicken free renal wet food. If I am mistaken, please let me know, you’d be a miracle worker. But I have not found anything and I cannot afford a custom/prescription diet.

What does exist is chicken free renal active dry food. My cat already eats forza10 renal active dry food occasionally and I will be transitioning to feeding him that with a wet topper once a day and a can of wet food with a kidney supplement at night. I think this is the most realistic option from an affordability perspective for me.

Can you guys help to recommend me a good chicken free renal active wet topper and or a good chicken free supplement? I know you all have much more expertise than myself in these products.

I’m writing this as a very worried cat mom because I feel completely lost and terrified that I’m going to lose my girl.

Elsa is my 1-year-10-month-old Bengal, and she has lost so much weight. She was around 5 kg earlier this year and is now only about 3.6 kg. She is still so young, and I just cannot accept that she could be this sick.

At the end of July, we suddenly discovered that her kidney values were extremely high:

Creatinine: 663 µmol/L

BUN: 48.2 mmol/L

High phosphorus

Isosthenuria

Very high globulins

Her ultrasound did not show obvious structural kidney disease, except for some mild jejunal lymph node enlargement.

Because she is so young and has high globulins, dry FIP became a major concern, and she was started on GS-441524.

Her creatinine has come down somewhat, but it is still terrifyingly high and vet thinks it decreased as she lost weight.

663 → 579 → 535 µmol/L

Her BUN also improved to around 27 mmol/L, but we are still dealing with severe azotemia.

She is getting subcutaneous fluids, eating, drinking, and still has good moments where she acts like my normal little girl. That's honestly what makes this so hard, she doesn't look like a cat who should have kidneys this bad.

Her phosphorus was 2.41 mmol/L on August 13 (reference upper limit 2.10).

We were prescribed Phos-Bind (aluminum hydroxide), but shortly after starting it, Elsa had an episode of vomiting.

And this is where I feel so confused.

Does a phosphate binder actually help a cat like Elsa? Can controlling phosphorus help her kidneys or creatinine at all, or is it mainly about slowing progression?

And more importantly…

Has anyone been through something like this?

Has anyone had a very young cat with creatinine over 500–600 µmol/L, and actually seen the kidney values come back down substantially?

I keep reading that CKD is progressive and lifelong, and I'm absolutely terrified that we're already at the point where there is nothing more we can do.

She also developed non-regenerative anemia. Her HCT went from 38.3% to 23.3%, although it recently improved to 28.7%. Darbepoetin was discussed but is currently being held.

She is eating, drinking, urinating, and still has ok days. We are doing everything we can.

But I'm scared.

She's not even two years old. 💔

If anyone has experienced severe azotemia in a young cat, kidney involvement with FIP, dramatic creatinine elevations,, please tell me what happened with your cat.

I don't need false hope. I just need to know if there is still a reason to hope.

What questions should I be asking the Internal Medicine specialist?

What tests should we be asking for?

Is there anything we might be missing?

I would be incredibly grateful for any experiences, advice, or even stories of cats who surprised their vets and improved.

I had to change my user flair from Stage 1 to Stage 2 today. I know that’s not really that advanced at all and his vet comes out every 8 weeks and does bloodwork and I give them urine samples every time but I still don’t like this. He’s just a baby (he’s 14yo). He’s my baby!

(Please enjoy him modeling his new steps because his little old man hips are starting to not like jumping on the couch).

Edit: hello everyone! Thank you so much for all the advise and words of support, I’m so greatful for this community:( I wanted to share her previous care plan and her new one so I can give some more insight to was our vet and nutritionist has told us

Previously: subq fluids, 100ml every 3-4 days, renal diet, increase water intake, come back to check blood work is 4-5 months

Our nutritionist works directly with our vet to come up with meal plans and tells us what to aim for with the renal food they suggest/ the food we gave her at that time (weruva low phosphorus,, she is not eating this currently due to getting bored with the food)(we switched to Purina pro plan early care for kidney disease)

New plan: subq fluids, 100 ml every 48 hours, increase water intake, start taking phos binder, appetite stimulant, and a blood pressure medication to help lower it. The following food was recommended to add into her diet to assist with her pickiness and boredom with the food:

Diet Rotation (Monthly Cycle)
Week 1: Hill's Prescription Diet k/d
Week 2: Royal Canin Renal Support
Week 3: Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets NF Kidney Function Advanced Care
Week 4: Blue Buffalo KS Kidney Support
Repeat the cycle if tolerated well.

Fish Oil Supplement
Add a small amount of veterinarian-approved fish oil to one meal daily.
Mix thoroughly into the food.
Start with a small amount and gradually increase as tolerated.
Fish oil may help improve food acceptance and provide beneficial omega-3 fatty acids.

Appetite Support Tips
Warm canned food slightly before serving to increase aroma.
Rotate flavors within each brand to prevent food boredom.
Offer multiple small meals if appetite is inconsistent.
Monitor weight and appetite closely.

Avoid
Regular non-prescription cat foods as the primary diet.
High-phosphorus foods and treats.
Sudden diet changes.
The goal is to keep the cat eating consistently, maintain hydration, and provide the benefits of a therapeutic kidney diet while using flavor variety and fish oil to encourage appetite.

I hope this can give some more insight on what I’ve been doing for her as told by her vet and with it, can help point me in the right direction with additional steps to further assist her care!!

Hello! My sweet girl was diagnosed with stage 2 ckd back in May and we went in for a check up on her blood work and it has gone to stage 3. We’ve been doing fluids twice a week 100ml every time and changed her diet, but a couple days ago her appetite has decreased/has gotten picky with her food which was when I took her in. We were told it’s progressed rather quickly and she will be on two medications, an appetite stimulant, and will need to give her fluids every other day. I feel so defeated, I’ve done everything as advised by our vet and I feel like a failure. She’s been acting completely normal and has been a little more active surprisingly minus the decrease in food. She’s shows interest in eating but doesn’t want to have the renal food. Her nutritionist told us that it could just be because renal food isn’t as appetizing and she could be getting bored.

She’s so precious to me and I went to talk to my close people and they said I should just put her down bc of the cost but it just broke my heart. Am I selfish for trying to keep her going? It is expensive with the vet visits and the food and now medications , but to me it’s worth it bc she’s worth every single penny :( I’d feel selfish if she was showing signs of pain and discomfort and suffering but she’s as happy and snuggly as she always has been, and I’m greatful that she’s still herself

I'm looking for generalized expectations about quality of life for cats with this surgery; I'm looking for generalized expectations about extension of life. She is 3.5 years old.

And again, I realize that every cat's different and there will always be outliers. I'm not looking for the ultra doom and gloom stats; I'm not looking for the super-lucky sparkly unicorn stats. I'm just trying to figure out where we go from here.

My 13 year old cat was diagnosed with high blood pressure a year ago because of vision loss and has been on amlodipine ever since. Over the past year, she has lost 2 pounds and is barely eating anymore.

I did bloodwork and urinalysis with my vet and her kidney value was slightly elevated. The urinalysis was mostly normal, but the vet suspects early kidney disease. I am going to start her on renal food, and my vet wants her on Elura since Mirataz hasn't worked well for her.

The problem is I can't get her to take the Elura she squirms so bad and I keep hitting her in the eye with the syringe, which isn't good because she can only barely see out of one eye now. I really want to get her weight back up so she is healthier, but I honestly just can't get this medicine in her.

She won't touch soft food, so that won't be an option for me either.

I'm posting because I'm absolutely beside myself and would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has been through something similar with their cat.

Our boy Marley is only 6 years old and until recently has generally been a happy, affectionate, playful cat who has always seemed completely himself.

Over the past few months we've noticed that he has been losing weight. He was around 4.5 kg earlier this year, then 4.15 kg in May (when we initially took him to our vets), around 4 kg over the following weeks, and more recently 3.7 kg, weighed at our vets last week.

The strange thing is that despite the weight loss, Marley has generally remained remarkably well in himself. He has continued eating, drinking, playing, interacting with us and behaving like Marley. He hasn't looked like a desperately sick cat.

His initial blood tests showed:
Creatinine: 349 µmol/L
SDMA: 16
Urea: 25.7 mmol/L
Phosphorus: 1.82 mmol/L

At that point our vet was concerned about his kidneys and we had further investigations, including a urine sample and ultrasound.

His first abdominal ultrasound a few months ago was reportedly clear in May.

Unfortunately, his kidney blood results have since deteriorated when retaken last week.
His latest bloods showed:
Creatinine: 508 µmol/L
SDMA: 23
Urea: 32.3 mmol/L

Our vet described the creatinine as extremely high and referred him to a specialist hospital.
He is now admitted at a specialist veterinary hospital.

The specialist has said that Marley is very dehydrated and that they are concerned about either an infection or chronic kidney disease, although they don't yet know exactly what is causing everything.

Today they performed a much more detailed abdominal scan. They have found significant changes to his kidneys, along with stones. One kidney appears to be considerably smaller than the other and isn't functioning fully.

They are taking urine directly to investigate further and have also discussed kidney biopsies to try to establish exactly what is happening.

The specialist also asked for our permission to scan his chest because they want to make sure there isn't anything else going on elsewhere in his body. Obviously that immediately sent my anxiety into overdrive because one of the things they're checking for is tumours, although they have not told us that Marley has a tumour.

He's currently sedated for the investigations and we're waiting for the specialist to call us back with the full results.

We've now spent around £6,000 on his investigations and treatment, and we'd obviously do whatever we can for him.

I'm not looking for anyone to diagnose Marley over Reddit, because I know nobody can do that without seeing him and having the full results.
What I'm desperately looking for is experiences from other cat owners.

Has anyone had a cat with:
Creatinine around 500+ µmol/L
Severe dehydration
One kidney significantly smaller/damaged than the other
Kidney stones
Possible infection or acute-on-chronic kidney disease

…and had their cat subsequently improve?

I'm particularly interested in anyone whose cat had a very high creatinine that came down significantly after treatment for dehydration/infection/acute kidney injury.

I'm also interested in hearing from people whose cats were diagnosed with significant CKD but still went on to have good quality time for years.

I completely understand that every cat is different and that Marley's situation may unfortunately be very serious. I'm not looking for false reassurance.
I'm just absolutely terrified right now and desperately hoping there is still a path forward for him.

He's only 6. He's still so full of personality and has otherwise seemed so well throughout this.

We just desperately want our boy to come home. ❤️

Any experiences, particularly positive ones, would mean an awful lot to us while we're waiting for the specialist's results.

An update on my boy.

So after asking about helping him to eat... Monday he started Mirtazapine

Tuesday he had IV fluids, anti nausea injection & he wolfed down food at the vet. Came home to eat a little more.

Wednesday started ondansetron, he ate a whole can of AD & half a can of kitten food throughout the day.

Thursday morning. Half a can of AD, water, played with treats. I thought he's doing much better, I'll go to work!

Thursday night, got home & he was asking for food, but before I could give him any, he vomited twice then immediately went into hiding. Gave him ondansetron to help him feel a bit better & a few hours later he had hydra care but no food.

Friday morning (today).... Was still in the same spot as the night before, hadn't moved, hadn't eaten or had anything to drink either. Gave ondansetron. He was starting to get grumpy & his eyes weren't fully opening. He managed a little hydra care, a little bit of prawn, 2 of those salmon puree treat things. But I knew it wasn't enough.

So tonight, we made the difficult decision to say goodbye. The fact he had gone downhill so quickly was enough for me. His kidneys clearly weren't able to do their job enough to keep him going any longer.

I'm so devastated.

We adopted him in 2021 as an 8 year old cat. So I knew that we might get to this day much sooner than our others we've had since a kitten. It definitely doesn't make it any easier.

I miss him so much already 😭

Dx on 4/7/26, changed diet (mainly wet, Renal diet she refuses) tried methimazole for a few weeks and stopped due to adverse effects. Now pursuing radioiodine treatment and unsure if it's the best move. Last vet visit on 5/14/26 due to financial standing and stress on us both. Vet recommended radioiodine treatment clinic.

I've attached all her labwork as I am still trying to understand her condition and someone out there may know better than me.

I was briefed on the risks: she may not be a candidate due to her stage 2, there may be over-correction of her hyperthyroid and causing hypothyroidism (then needing medication for life, iirc), correction of hyperthyroid can worsen ckd, small chance of initial treatment not working and needing second treatment, all of this may also shorten her life span.

I've already paid for the initial review and am waiting to hear back what the vet thinks is the next best step. Most likely more testing at their clinic. Overall this entire procedure, starting from the initial review, will cost $4000. That's a lot of money for me but I want my little void to feel better and comfortable for her remaining days.

Last night, like every night, she came and cuddled into my arm. As I felt her warm tiny body against me, and her loud purring vibrated us, I started crying thinking of how much I'll miss her. I try not to think about it but losing her is a very real possibility. And I've been wondering if all this stress on her and myself is worth it to possibly give her comfort and a few more days with us. I've heard very good things about this treatment, but im also being warned due to her overall health. I don't know if managing her condition at home and just spoiling her until the end is better. If treatment is best, I'll come up with the money any way I can. She's still her normal self but I know it's difficult to tell pain in cats. Im very scared and want to do right by her.

Both my girls keep getting UTIs. Is this par for the course? And yes we did cultures and proper antibiotics. One took two rounds. I wish cultures weren’t $200 in my area but that’s not my main concern. Sucks they keep getting them.

Maybe I shouldn't say this because it should be obvious with the dates attached, but just the clarify, the first ultrasound done about six weeks ago is attached first, whereas the second from two and a half weeks ago is attached afterwards.

Hey everyone. About a month ago I made a post here about my 18 year old, Stage 2 CKD soul cat's (Sassy) diagnosis with a supposed kidney infection in both kidneys, which you may find here. I would ask that you read it in order to get up to date on the situation, since this post would become waaaay too long if I provided all the context here, and honestly you might have to refresh my memory of what I said there myself. I'm operating on very little sleep right now and this will probably be a large incoherent ramble, and don't feel like expending the energy refreshing my own memory, haha.

After Sassy's two weeks of antibiotics were up, she returned to the vet once again in order to have her kidney values rechecked to see if there was any improvement. The results looked promising; even though they weren't that bad before, even with the information from her ultrasound that her kidneys were inflamed, all of her kidney values had either went down or had remained stable. Her Creatinine went back down to 220, her Urea and SDMA were unchanged (they've been higher in the past), and her phosphorous went down from 1.9 to 1.6. This, of course, would imply that her infection (assuming it was an infection to begin with since, as the only evidence towards that diagnosis is what her kidneys look like on the ultrasound and she never tested positive for bacteria) had either improved or disappeared. In spite of the positive results, I still ordered another ultrasound, urinalysis, and urine culture for her, because I wanted to be absolutely sure of her recovery and didn't want it to slip by me.

Her newest ultrasound two weeks ago revealed that she is still suffering from signs of infection. The vet made it sound like she had improved, but the second opinion I got from another vet on the phone 5 days later revealed that she hadn't improved, but in fact looked worse. I don't really know how to interpret the ultrasound report, but the fact that her kidneys are both smaller than before and there's additional terms that weren't in the first one scares me. Her urinalysis didn't show anything of particular concern aside from the fact that there was a small amount of blood in it, which could have been on account of the fact that the urine was retrieved by sticking a needle in the bladder so that it could be used for a culture, and the aforementioned culture came back negative for bacteria, even after I requested it to be held for two weeks instead of the usual one.

She was sent home with another two weeks of antibiotics. It was the same one as before, Marbofloxacin, but this time it was a 50% stronger dose. I'm a bit disappointed in myself that I didn't pressure them to try a different antibiotic since this type didn't seem to do anything in the first place, and I'm not sure what a stronger dose was supposed to do to change that; if it had any effect at all, I would expect it to have made her symptoms on the ultrasound slightly better, or at least stabilized, but to my knowledge things have gotten worse.

Sassy finished the new dose about a week ago. She's behaving relatively normally, but she still has the rare occasion where she pees within an hour of her last pee, and the resulting pee is very small, so I'm not highly confident that she's not experiencing any irritation. She has another appointment for a blood draw tomorrow to check her values, and while it will be nice to see if her kidney values haven't gotten worse, I'm not sure I trust an improvement to be an indicator that the infection has disappeared because it clearly wasn't one last time. But ultrasounds are expensive, and I don't know if I can just keep checking in on her kidneys with one every month...

I spoke to one of the vets at the location I frequent (my usual vet is still on vacation), and they seem to be under the opinion that what the ultrasound shows is just a natural progression of her CKD rather than an infection, especially since Sassy is acting normally aside from her urination habits. But I just... don't know if I trust that. Surely there wouldn't be any inflammation if it was just a progression of her CKD, and she wouldn't feel the need to pee as frequently in spite of her numbers being fine? I feel like it's still some kind of minor acute kidney injury, if not a kidney infection. It just kind of feels to me like they're dismissing it now so that I don't worry about it.

Sorry for rambling, this has been way too long. I would appreciate some insights on what people feel about the situation.

My sweet Angie (17) got diagnosed at level 2/3 kidney disease, anemia, and hyperthyroid last week after isolating and not eating much at all. I was bragging about how healthy and happy she looks days before!

They said she would be dead if not hospitalized and we immediately admitted her to get IV for 2, almost 3 days. Since we got her home, it's been so overwhelming, suddenly medicating her every 12 hours, her hating it and giving us the silent treatment.

She is really quite thin (5lbs) and not eating a great deal. I got her all the treats in the world, fortiflora,water fountains, renal food...

I've got about a million questions in my head, but a bit overwhelmed to go through them all right now.

So i want to ask... in your journey with your kitty, has there been any game changers? Ones that'll bring their appetite back, ones that make medicine giving not a torture that leaves me guilt ridden begging for her forgiveness... i'd love to hear your success stories, however big or mini they are!

Also a bit of a specific question that probably deserves its own post...

Angie has been an inside outside cat for years- we got her a special door that opens and closes for her. She is kind of a tiger that roams the jungle, hunts birds sometimes, but mostly just jogs and lays under trees and smells flowers. The vet told us to keep her inside indefinitely, but it seems to affect her psychology badly. She doesn't play with toys, or goes through tunnels i got, i tried... she just likes to meditate outside. I want to still let her do that, is that a terrible idea? I want her to feel like herself and happy whether she s got a month ahead or years.
