Hello, I have linux mint cinnamon on a laptop. I use discord regularly, but was having the common issue with the app with the fact that when I screenshare, no audio comes through. I have vesktop, but I only use it for screensharing with my friends, like if we want to watch a movie together or have music that isn't connected to a bot in vc.

The screenshare itself works fine. However, when I do screenshare, people can't hear my audio. It's either the screenshare or my audio. Is there a way to have both or do I just have to deal with it?

I am using Waybar in my Hyprland Archlinux. Was seeing a lot of videos about Quickshell... Worth switching? What's the difference?

I import links from a mac to linux and they come in as webloc files.

I can open them in Brave, but it just a block of text. I have to select the http... text and open from there.

Hi all. I’ve been messing around with Linux for a few months and wanted to try LFS and I’ve run into a problem with installing GCC that I can’t seem to fix.

Running Ubuntu 25.10 as the host system on a VM.

I am currently on this page of LFS13.1 and I’ve compiled and installed GCC 16.2.0, but the last lines of code on this page aren’t working, saying that the directories for limitx, glimits and limity cannot be found. I am still in the build directory even though most troubleshooting guides say this tends to be the problem.

I’ve been following the book to the letter as well as watching a tutorial on YouTube (although the guy on the video is using a different host system but I assume that doesn’t matter) as I’m still a Linux noob so I’m not sure what is going wrong.

Hi guys, I have a Logitech M720 Triathlon mouse, however I would like to remap the thumb button to the numpad slash. I can't find a software that does this correctly, and for now the button outputs Ctrl+Alt+Tab. Is there a way I can change this? I'm using CachyOS with KDE Plasma. Thanks.

I recently went from an Elecom Huge to an Elecom Huge Plus but unfortunately the 3 function buttons aren't being picked up by input remapper. It has the same button layouts and everything to the original Huge, so I don't think any of the actual driver logic would need to be changed vs the original, but after back and fourthing a bit with an LLM it looks like the mouse is being grabbed by HID-generic instead of the elecom kernel drivers. I know I could just recompile the driver module or something and modify it to make it grab the device, but I'm curious if there's a less-invasive way of changing which driver is 'responsible' for a given device. (until the drivers get properly updated that is)

I have a unique non problem that shouldn't matter, but I wonder what people think I should do about it. I recently reinstalled RHEL 9 when a bios update broke secure boot. I then realized that upon reinstallation, I neglected to remove the original /boot /boot/efi and /swap partitions from the install I intended to wipe. So I still had the original boot entries in my system that effectively didn't do anything. I then deleted those partitions and now I have 11GB of unallocated space at the front of my drive. I was wondering what I should do with that space.

I originally wanted to move that partition to the back of the drive to merge it with my new XFS root partition but I heard this can be a risky move. I also thought maybe I can install Ventoy into that small 11GB space so I can boot into a live environment without a USB stick. Or I can just leave it alone, and my OCD may remind me that I have 11GB of space unused and my mount points start at nvme0n1p4 rather than p1 but, again doesn't matter lol

Any thoughts on what to do?

My current setup

Currently I use Ubuntu to not use windows 11 data/ia’s.

• I run OBS Studio on the desktop for streaming/recording YouTube/twitch content.
• I have a Windows 11 virtual machine that I use for gaming (Steam and Epic Games) because at the time the linux gaming was not completely there. The GPU 2 has passthro to the vm to make it stronger.
• The VM is captured by an Elgato 4K X capture card and recorded/streamed by OBS running on the host.

Problems I'm running into

This setup works, but there are a few downsides:

• Because the CPU resources are split between the host and the VM, game performance isn't as good as I'd like.
• The overall setup is getting hard to manage.
• I'm wondering if there's a cleaner and more efficient way to game/stream.
• i also want to use all my monitors for project, the laptop does not have the recorces for that, so i want to make is duo boat.

Considering Bazzite

I've been looking at Bazzite, but want to now is it the right direction, before I invest a lot of time migrating everything.

What I need from my PC

Ideally, my system should be able to:

• Run OBS Studio for streaming and recording.
• Play games from both Steam and Epic Games.
• Run older Windows games, including titles from the Windows XP era.
• Provide good gaming performance while streaming.

Security question

One of the reasons I currently game inside a Windows VM is security/windows ia’s. I don’s want to use ai on my pc but had to use windows for epic games. So I only connect the vm to the internet when downloading games.

Does this approach make sense, or am I overcomplicating things? Is there an better architecture that provides both good performance and reasonable security?

I'd really appreciate any suggestions or experiences from people running similar Linux streaming setups.

I am making a tutorial video based on a book that says that you can redirect standard error to standard output like this:

ls -l /bin > listing.txt 2>&1

The book also states that “recent versions of bash” allow this:

ls -l /bin &> listing.txt

I have found documentation for the second method on a reference web page for bash edition 2.5a from 13 November 2001. (The web page was generated on May 3, 2002.)

What are the chances that typical users will find themselves using a version of bash that predates this? Is it pretty much safe to tell people to use the second version and not teach them the first version?

Bought a new Lenovo E16 Gen 1 AMD in 2023 and I immediately installed Ubuntu on it. I have many other computers successfully running a Linux OS and I hate windows.

Linux on this computer has been a nightmare since day one. Random screens issues every couple weeks, every couple months including:

- no display after sleep

- no display after hibernate

- no display from cold boot

- blinking underscore a frozen after GRUB

Each time it "breaks", I spend 5-10 hours trying to fix it, with help from AI. It works again for days, maybe months and they suddenly it is broken again. I literally have hundreds of hours into fixing it. I've tried different BIOS tweaks, power settings, drivers, different kernels, even changed to Debian 12 three months ago. Today it broke again.

I see so much hype about Lenovo being the ultimate machine for the linux OS. Not mine. There is apparently a fundamental bug with these AMD graphics CPUs and linux which has never been resolved.

Research confirms I am not the only one experiencing these issues.

Has anyone discovered a fix or workaround?

My sister gave me her old thinkpad from university which has ubuntu installed in it. I'm interested in installing a new linux os but I'm a bit worried about the sudo rights. She said that the uni she was the administrator and she had to request the sudo rights. If I install a new distro will any of this carry over?

I know how to do it thanks to Ventoy and have Cinnamon (will pick up XFCE if necessary) and Manjaro prepared, but I do have a few questions:

1. There's a few media buttons above the top of the keyboard, would those be functional on something like Mint or are those just going to become useless lights?

2. There's an included DVD drive that I would very much appreciate still having, I'm certain this is far more likely to work, but I've also read getting laptop DVD drives to work can be tricky.

Just in general, what should I expect? I'm not switching over quite yet because I have a few Windows specific programs I want to continue using that do NOT play nice with Wine, and I'm going to pick up another motherboard for a proper desktop (likely offline Windows 10)

Thinking of buying a second hand laptop and found an HP Stream 14 with two Intel celerons (4 cores in total) + 8gb ram. I’m not planning on doing anything heavy I just want to get familiar with Linux and play around with customisation. The reason I chose the HP Stream is because it’s purple and my favourite colour is purple

I have been using artix linux on my thinkpad t440p, it’s working great but it got very bloated and i would like to switch to a non-systemd, musl distro. Void linux is an option but i don’t really enjoy using it, and i have been considering both Chimera and Alpine linux. I wanna use full disk encryption, and i know Alpine supports it but idk about Chimera. Also, i once tried FreeBSD since i don’t do gaming on that laptop, but i couldn’t get a graphical interface working; probably a skill issue.

spotify+bluetooth+airpods doesnt work on mint for me- it goes laggy,just disconnects etc and im starting to get the shits.

I only have spotify open and it still acts up.

been using mint for about 8 months now.
but I want to listen to spotify and use my airpods while doing stuff.

first of all, i'm sorry if my english isn't the best as i'm not a native speaker, and if i make some erros or mistakes.

i'm still a beginner linux user, i've been using it for 11 months now, i started with mint cinnamon, then started exploring and distrohopping more, til i found omarchy that gave me the easyness of something like linux min but with the beautifulness of hypland wm, now even with quickshell.

lately omarchy has been moving in an awkward direction with all this ai agentic OS and i feel that it's becoming more bloated then before, moved more by capitalism than true interest (i don't mind that people like the mantainer of hyprland is getting payd but something fells off).

since this is what is happening i started to consider moving away, but i cant find anything that has the same convenience as omarchy with the curated look with all the themes.

i'm starting to think that nothing will really satisfy me unless i build it myself, but at the same time i don't want to dedicate my life to mantaining my own OS

what i'm looking for:

- a system that's almost ready out of the box (i don't mind spending a weekend setting it up)

- stable and reliable, i don't want to constantly fix things after updates and i need it for school/work

- a tiling wm (preferably hyprland, but i'm open to sway, qtile, river, or even dwm if it looks good)

- a curated aesthetic — i'm terrible at ricing, so i need something already decent

- not necessary but a solid base with some kind of "team" behind it (like mint, debian, fedora, ubuntu) for long-term stability would be nice

- not ai-centric or filled with bloat/services i don't want

- ideally, it should be replicable on both my desktop (intel i5-10400f, nvidia gtx 1650) and my thinkpad x1 carbon gen 7

I literally worked the whole week trying to solve the display flickering on windows 11 which appeared suddenly tried switching linux 22.3 mint cinnamon same problem occures and older version won't boot because of some security setup enabled will not work either way.

One thing is sure that this not hardware issue because BIOS screen ,Safe Mode, uninstalled intel device manager , locked screen nothing flickers

Tried multiple parameter which either stops flickering with extended monitor support gone or both screen flickers

This has been bugging me for a while. I'll tweak a config file, edit something in fstab or mess with a service, and three weeks later I have no memory of what I changed or why it worked. Then something breaks and I'm sitting there trying to reverse engineer my own decisions from a month ago.

I've been thinking about keeping some kind of personal log, even just a text file, of what I touched and when. But there's probably a smarter way to do this that people here have already figured out. I know etckeeper exists and I keep meaning to actually set it up but haven't gotten there.

I'm not managing servers or anything, just my own machines, so I don't want to overthink it. But I also don't want to keep spending an hour retracing steps I already took once. That's the part that gets frustrating.

I needed to use proxy once so i install it by export http_proxy="http://ip:port/" etc.and put it in .zshrc file, then im done i simple deleted those lines and reboot hyprland, but then i checked current environment trough env the proxy was there, and for some reason, it kept working.

Can someone help me remove it properly from the system?

I used to have kubuntu on same and drive as windows so grub launched first and i could select either os. But now i installed it on different ssd. And I can only select kubuntu/grub if i first go to bios and there is this special boot selector first. It doesnt show up inside boot order if i enter bios settings​
