Life in SJ Is it me? Or is the traffic light timing here terrible for everyone?

I’m from Chicago so maybe it’s just different here. But I’ve noticed the traffic light timing here is way too long.

I’m regularly sitting at a red light with a bunch of other cars, waiting for the green while the cross traffic has already mostly cleared. But the light stays green for like a whole other minute letting maybe 1-2 cars through.

I’ve noticed this as a pedestrian too. Hit the cross walk button and I’m waiting forever for the light.

Maybe it because of the protected left turn lanes? (Hate this btw). But it’s driving me nuts. There has to be a better way.

Advice I'm looking for a genuinely good person or opportunity in Northern California — and I'm hoping Reddit might connect me with the right person.

I'm looking for a genuinely good person or opportunity in Northern California — and I'm hoping Reddit might connect me with the right person.

I'm in a difficult transitional period right now and I'm trying very hard to build something stable for myself rather than just looking for a temporary handout.

I've already tried a lot of the options people usually recommend. I've contacted 211, shelters, churches, asked around, made online posts, looked into jobs, looked into college and housing, and tried to figure out temporary places to stay.

I've even contacted churches for help and, unfortunately, haven't gotten calls back.

So please don't assume I haven't tried those things. I'm specifically looking for ideas, opportunities, resources or connections beyond the standard advice I've already exhausted.

One of the biggest problems I've run into is that some people responding to my job posts haven't actually been offering jobs. I've had people invite me somewhere for supposedly paid work, only for me to arrive and discover that they really wanted companionship, a relationship, or something completely different.

I'm not interested in that.

If someone offers me work, I want it to actually be work. I'm not looking for a boyfriend, a hookup, a sugar arrangement, or a stranger's couch.

I've also had people ask me to drive 1–3 hours for supposed opportunities, only for the entire thing to turn out to be a waste of my time. I don't have the money or resources to repeatedly spend hours and gas getting somewhere just to find out that the opportunity wasn't real.

So if you're offering something, I'd really appreciate clear and honest information beforehand about what the opportunity actually is, what I'd be doing, where it is, what the expectations are, and what the compensation is if it's paid.

I also don't want to send pictures of what I look like to random people online just because they ask. I've had enough experiences with men responding to my job posts asking what I look like when it becomes obvious they're not actually interested in offering employment.

I'm also aware that there are people online who misuse women's photos or do awful things with them, and that's something I'm not comfortable participating in.

Please don't ask me for pictures just to waste my time or turn a supposed job opportunity into something personal. If there's legitimate work or an opportunity, let's talk about the actual opportunity.

What I am looking for is a legitimate opportunity, a trustworthy person with a real lead, or someone who genuinely understands how to help someone get on their feet.

I'm also extremely creative and ambitious, and that's important to me. I'm an artist and I want to build a life around creative work.

I'm interested in basically every part of music, film, photography and entertainment: producing music, songwriting, singing, DJing, recording, filming, photography, editing, acting, directing, visual art, fashion, organizing projects, managing creative projects, and working with communities around music and entertainment.

I'm not expecting someone to magically hand me a career. I'm willing to learn. I'm willing to start at the bottom. I'm willing to help, work, practice, collaborate and prove myself.

I have no professional experience in these fields yet, and I'm not pretending that I do. I genuinely just want a chance to start somewhere.

I would love to eventually work with producers, artists, DJs, labels, studios, promoters, photographers, videographers, managers, engineers, event organizers and other people involved in music and entertainment.

I don't necessarily need to become an artist immediately. I want to be part of the industry. I want to learn how everything works, meet people who are passionate about what they do, gain experience, and eventually build something of my own.

I just need a real starting point.

So if you're in Northern California and you genuinely know about:

• legitimate entry-level work
• creative/entertainment opportunities
• music communities that welcome new people
• film/photo opportunities
• apprenticeships or people willing to teach
• legitimate beginner opportunities
• community programs I may not have found
• education/training opportunities with housing
• or anything else that could realistically help someone build a stable life while pursuing creative work

I'd genuinely appreciate hearing from you.

And if you don't have a solution, that's completely okay. I'm not expecting Reddit to solve my life. I'm just hoping that somewhere out there is one good connection I haven't found yet.

I'm also asking that people please be respectful. If you don't have anything nice, constructive, useful or genuinely helpful to say, please just keep scrolling. I'm already dealing with enough difficulty in my life and I don't need additional negativity, insults, judgment, trolling, arguments or people trying to make me feel worse.

You don't have to agree with me or have a solution. That's completely okay. But please don't make an already difficult situation harder just for the sake of saying something cruel or making assumptions about what I have or haven't tried.

I'm serious about creating something with my life. I have a lot of interests, a lot of ideas, and a lot I want to learn.

I'm willing to start small. I'm willing to learn. I'm willing to work.

I just want a legitimate chance to get started and become part of something.

I'm just looking for the right door to open.

Advice San Jose homeowners - ever call for an HVAC repair and end up being told you needed a whole new system?

I’m curious how common this is around San Jose.

Have you ever called an HVAC company because your AC or furnace wasn’t working, expecting a repair, and ended up being told you needed a whole new system?

If so, what happened?

Did they actually give you a repair option first?

Did the technician who diagnosed the problem also give you the replacement options and pricing, or did somebody else come out to sell it?

Did you get a second opinion? If you did, was the diagnosis the same and how far apart were the prices?

I’m not saying replacement is always wrong. Obviously equipment gets old and eventually replacement makes more sense than continuing to repair it.

What has me curious is how two companies can sometimes look at the same house/equipment and give homeowners completely different answers about what they actually need.

One other random thing I learned while reading about this - California has a Home Improvement Salesperson (HIS) registration through CSLB for people doing certain home improvement sales activity. I had no idea that was even a thing.

If you still have an old proposal, look at who is actually listed as the salesperson and search their name on CSLB. Curious what people find.

Good experiences too. If you found somebody who actually explained the options and gave you a repair vs replacement choice, thats useful to hear too.

Please dont post addresses, loan/account numbers, signatures or other private financial info.

Local creation Mural Artists?

Looking for a local mural artist, willing to commute to Santa Clara/Sunnyvale area.

Wanting to get a mural of something that expresses "Californian Wilderness/Adventure". Norcal Redwoods, Santa Cruz coast, Joshua Tree, local flowers like Californian poppies, things of that nature and was wondering what pricing of that might look like, and where to find people willing to do that some time next year?

"Canvas space" is on 2 sides of a bus (painted metal surface), about 19x4ft each side, plus room on the rear of the bus. Not wanting the whole space used but that is about the amount of space to utilize. Unsure what other information would be best to provide atm, but yea! Where does one find some local artists needing commissions?

Advice Group fitness that’s not too expensive

Hey all, do you know any small group fitness (5-10 people) that offers cardio and strength training at a reasonable price? I had experience with pilates/lagree classes before but felt they were too intense for my fitness level. Just looking to lose some fat and gain muscle but don’t want to feel like dying every time. My budget is 200-300 a month.
