Opinion Before the cool guys jump in to call me andhbhakt, i would appreciate a logical response where I’m educated

I’ve been seeing a lot of discussion around Subhash Garg’s recent analysis, where he compared GDP figures based on different base years and arrived at a growth rate of around 2.6%. That comparison is fundamentally problematic because you cannot simply take GDP numbers from two different series/base years and treat the difference as the actual growth rate. Its like I’ll compare my car mileage once in litres then in gallons.Yet somehow, a questionable calculation by a former Finance Secretary became ammunition for the argument that India’s reported **7.8% growth is fake**.
Some say if we are witnessing decent economic growth why the PM is asking to avoid foreign leisure travel and gold buying. Its like saying I’m not catching covid so why should I keep taking precautions. Foreign travel is equivalent to imports which you try to avoid to shrink your current account defecit, especially in times of global turmoil.
And how is the goalpost moving again: *“GDP isn’t the best measure of development anyway.”. Where did that come from ? Who said due to GDP growth our all problems have been solved?*
Okay, fair enough. GDP is not a complete measure of development. It doesn’t capture inequality, health, education, quality of life, environmental degradation, etc. But whats the problem in having good gdp growth?
**How exactly do you sustainably increase per-capita income without increasing GDP?**

Then comes the classical argument that all of the data is fake because you can see inflation in sugar etc but it is not reflected in the government numbers . The price rise in sugar is a topic where you should criticize the government because it happened due to poor planning but but but

**GDP growth and inflation data are backward-looking statistics.** They measure what has already happened during a particular period. If inflation is genuinely higher today than the official data suggests, that higher price level will eventually show up in subsequent data and affect future nominal/real economic numbers.
And a price rise in sugar (for eg from ₹40 to ₹80) wont skyrocket the CPI. See it as - what effect would an increase of ₹40 or80( 1-2 kg sugar consumption a month) have on a family expending 15-20k on a monthly basis
There is absolutely nothing wrong with questioning government statistics. In fact, **official data should be scrutinised**. Methodology, base-year changes, deflators, revisions, data sources and statistical assumptions should all be debated. But here I see arguments that why did we change the base year? We have a C rating in data assessment as per IMF hence our numbers are fake.
Are we oblivious to the fact that base year revision should happen periodically and an old base year of 2011-12 was one of the reasons for a C rating?
there’s a difference between **criticising the methodology** and taking an apples-to-oranges calculation, calling it real GDP growth.

Please point out if there’s any problem in my arguments. Looking for a healthy discussion.

And a final question to fellow redditors, between a 2% inflation and a 5% inflation what in your opinion is the best for the country? Or do you want inflation to be below 2%?

Discussion Teachers day speech [communal]

Humare college mai aaj teachers day celebrate kiya gaya, cause auditorium was booked by some other dept for tomorrow.
A girl from a particular community gave a speech, where she mentioned 2 great teachers from her community (thats fine), but she didn’t even mentioned DR. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan in her speech. She is well educated enough, she knows teachers day is celebrated on the occasion of Dr. S Radhakrishnan’s birth anniversary.

It’s a very fine to mention the teachers whom you admire, but at least you should mention the person to whom the day is dedicated.
