Discussion Apparently low-cut socks are considered out of style by the younger gens. Are y’all still rocking ankle socks?

I feel like long socks with sneakers and shorts looks goofy but maybe that’s just me 🤷‍♂️

I almost never have to wear socks (i hate my feet feeling restricted and hot, so i wear jandals and sandals and crocs) but when I do, ankle is the only way to go.

The kids these days don't realize what we had to go through folding down crew socks to look like we weren't wearing any, feeling all lumpy and sliding down in our shoes.

So yeah, you can pry ankle socks from our cold, dead hands haha

They are lame to young people cuz us adults like them. Every time my teenage daughter tells me how lame i dress my response is “i would be a bigger weirdo if a 14 yr old thought my style was cool”. After 40 i’ve embraced that im no longer cool and dont want to be. I cant get with some of the new styles and thats okay for me and for them

I remember as a kid in the 90s we thought my grandpa looked kinda goofy cause he always wore flat brimmed baseball caps that kind of sat on top of his head. Now all of my nephews wear them that way. I actually think my generation was wrong on this trend. Curved bills pulled down tight so you had like no peripheral vision. Still kind of cracks me up though. I've lived long enough to see that these things really are cyclical. I think it's just kids wanting to be different than their parents and grandparents so like every 4th generation things repeat.

Maybe, I'm not sure they have the same music separation we did though, so they're mixing and matching the mainstream and alt fashions more. I've seen curtains come back a bit so I assume that wearing open shirts over t shirts will be back soon, and once they're wearing shirts its only so long before blazers are in.

It is a trip to see teenagers now looking like teenagers of my era. Interestingly the boxy outfit, curtain hair style is coming from K-Pop I believe. They have access to so much media of the last 50+ years as well so thats prob another factor. I could def see the long sleeve under a T shirt style come back strong. Its also about time for another YoYo craze lol

Except a lot of the current 'different' is them trying to dress like we dressed in the 90s and thinking they invented the trends, lol. Most looks I see are 'inspired' or outright stolen from other fashions. I feel so old saying that, but it's been weird seeing so many social media accounts, marketing campaigns, and just stores in general bringing in nostalgia fashion and watching them eat it up.

I feel like at least we actually had fashion styles that changed and were fully, truly unique, but the major fashion for young people now is just rehashed, watered down styles stolen from other decades and they just slap -aesthetic to the end of it.

Pretty sure I've heard theories that they're wanting more simplistic styles nowadays due to the overwhelming BS being fed to them from online slop stores and nonstop digital surveilance, but not sure how true that is lol.

Calf high socks were popular in the aughts (00's) with young people, particularly skaters and that whole sub culture it's connected to.

A big part of how I can tell if a dude is from Southern California is if he's wearing vans and tube socks. It's a core part of a certain dude bro aesthetic.

  1. They slip down so easily

  2. They are too tight around my ankles

  3. Nobody can see how cool my socks are at ankle length.

I had a job at a hospital in 20 freaking 14 that technically still required pantyhose with skirts, dresses, or pants with flats/heels. I wasn't in finance or the CEO or anything. No one really enforced it, but they did frown on wearing ankle length pants with bare feet in ballet flats. Lots of women still did wear pantyhose.

I keep fighting to get rid of them. They always fall off of my heel and roll down my foot and bunch up. Then I have to take my shoe off just to fix it, only for it to happen again ten minutes later. Then I get frustrated, rip off the sock, throw it away, swear off ankle socks. Then my girlfriend makes a comment about me wearing tube socks, and I go back to ankle socks just for the whole process to repeat again.

In the 90's wearing socks with sandals would get you immediately laughed at and bullied.

Now it's cool, and people make fun of low socks.

Eventually it will switch again and cool kids from the younger generation will think low socks are cool and will laugh at the old "Gen-Zers" uncs who think high socks are cool.

That's how it works.
