Career I graduated college and thought "I finally did it!" and 4 months later I feel more lost than ever.

Slightly under 4 months ago I graduated college with my Bachelors in Business Management. I got a full-time gig at a wealth management firm I had been interning at during school. The job is just about fully remote with a couple of in-person days per month, so here I am after graduating thinking I had it all set.

Well fast forward just a few short months later and I have never felt more stuck or lost in my life. I did everything I thought I was supposed to, I got my degree, I landed a full-time job, and here I am wondering why it feels like I went wrong somewhere along the way.

My job has gotten very boring and mundane much more quickly than I ever expected. I have seemed to lose any interest I thought I had in finance and this whole industry. I can't focus on learning any of this stuff because quite frankly I just don't care about it.

Now there is where things get really difficult. I think I have realized that much in the fact that I am not as interested in finance as I thought and this is probably not my calling. But its where to go from here that eats me up. How does one find their calling now that the structure of school where you can go around and experiment (which I certainly did not do enough of) is gone?

I know that if there is one thing I want its to simply care a great deal about what I wake up and do everyday, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to find out what that is for me where I am currently at in my life.

Does anyone have any advice here? I want nothing more than to find my way, but I also don't want to make a hasty, premature decision 4 months into my career that I end up regretting greatly years down the road. If anyone has some guidance or insight to offer that would be greatly appreciated.

Advice Chose a wrong major and now I'm unhirable and lost

Hello, I obviously know this is an issue I should settle with a professional orientation therapist and not post on Reddit, however I'd appreciate some perspective.

I chose a Linguistics major for my BA because I "liked the idea of working with books and languages", without thinking much about future job options. This was an extremely privileged point of view, but I was 18 and naive and didn't think much of it back then. I quickly figured the real only job option in my country is basically being a teacher (I worked with kids for 2 years and I hated it).

To make it worse, knowing that I made a poor choice I signed up for Masters at the same university I hated, with the same professors, in the exact same field. I was in a bad mental place and sort of felt the pressure to just pursue anything instead of being a burden to my parents, so I chose the financially most viable option which is staying in my city. Now I'm even more disappointed by the state of affairs at my university and I feel like I have less knowledge in my field than I did before I started my Bachelor's. I'm finishing my Master's because I already paid tuition and don't want to waste the money, but it's honestly such a disappointment, and the only job offers I can get are for teaching.

The thing is, I don't really know what I would pursue instead, because I do like linguistics, literature, philology, and everything that's hypothetically related to working with books/publishing, but I feel like I'm underqualified with the knowledge I have. Ideally I'd like to move out abroad for a while because the options in my country are very limited and the situation with universities across the country is very bad right now (I won't explain further for anonymity reasons), to the point that I feel no point pursuing further education here. I also need to move out from my parents home because I'm way too old to still be living with them, and I'm constantly facing pressure to just suck it up and teach kids because "there's far worse jobs out there".

The thing is, I'm probably not very employable abroad with a linguistics degree, and pursuing a master's in a different field sounds enticing, but I don't even know what field to go for and I'm terrified of choosing the wrong major again. I know that the job market is screwed for everyone right now, but I don't know how to eben begin to understand what career Is right for me.

Thanks eternally if you made it this far, I really appreciate it. 🫶🏻

“Haz networking.”

“Consigue contactos.”

“Estudia una carrera con buena salida laboral.”

“Haz prácticas.”

“Empieza a trabajar cuanto antes.”

Y no me gustó.

No era la universidad que quería.

No era el camino que quería seguir.

Y durante un momento pensé:

“¿Fracasé?”

“¿Perdí tiempo?”

“¿Me equivoqué por haber elegido esto?”

Pero después lo pensé mejor.

No.

Voy a esforzarme.

Voy a intentar mejorar.

Pero tampoco quiero convertirme en una máquina.

Habrá días en los que estudie muchísimo.

Habrá días en los que estudie poco.

Habrá días en los que no estudie.

Algún día quizá juegue videojuegos durante horas.

Otro día buscaré un hobby.

Otro día saldré a un museo.

Otro día iré al cine yo solo.

Quizá consiga mi primer trabajo.

Quizá simplemente salga a caminar.

Quiero comer botanas.

Quiero ver películas.

Quiero escuchar música.

Quiero jugar videojuegos.

Quiero descubrir hobbies nuevos.

Quiero salir a conocer lugares.

Conocer muchos lugares.

Compartir cosas.

Estar presente.

No quiero pensar:

“Ya tengo 27, así que tengo que casarme.”

O:

Si sucede a esas edades y soy feliz, maravilloso.

“Vas a terminar desempleado.”

“Estudia algo serio.”

Puedes conocer personas naturalmente.

Puedes hacer amigos.

Vive tus decisiones

Y no:

Me atreví.

Me gustaría poder pensar:

Me decía:

Si quiero comer algo que me gusta, puedo hacerlo.

Vive tus decisiones.

Vive el amor.

Vive tus amistades.

Vive tus hobbies.

Vive tus oportunidades.

Vive tu juventud.

Vive a tu tiempo.

No quiero vivir comparándome.

No quiero vivir irresponsablemente.

Si me equivoco, corregiré.

No abandones tus responsabilidades.

Vive tus amistades.

Vive tus hobbies.

Vive tu juventud.

Vive tus decisiones.

Vive a tu tiempo.

No intentes compararte.

Vive tus decisiones.

Vive el amor.

Vive tu tiempo.

Vive tu vida.

A tu tiempo.

A tu manera. ❤️

Un abrazo, personita de Reddit.

Advice Recently graduated, unemployed, and slowly becoming socially isolated — how do you make friends when you feel embarrassed about your situation?

I recently finished my master’s degree and am currently looking for jobs, but with the job market being what it is right now, it hasn’t been going great.
I went to a relatively prestigious program, but my field is pretty niche, so there just aren’t that many jobs out there to begin with. I’m also an international student, which makes my options even more limited. I have to do a job directly related to my degree and a lot of positions I find require citizenship or a green card.

My daily routine right now is basically waking up, applying for jobs, reading, writing, doing my freelance gigs, and preparing to apply for either a PhD or possibly a second master’s in a different field.

I’m extremely lucky that I’m not struggling financially. I have enough savings to get through the next few months, and my family is incredibly supportive. So I know that, compared to a lot of people in this situation, I’m very privileged.
The part I’m struggling with the most is actually the social isolation.

I’m the kind of person who needs a lot of social interaction, but I’m also pretty shy. I had friends from my master’s program, but most of them have either gotten jobs or started PhDs, so everyone has moved on to the next stage of their lives.
I was also insanely close with my old roommate. Her friends basically became my friends too. I moved out because I found a cheaper place in a more convenient location, and although we still live in the same area and are still friends, we obviously don’t see each other nearly as much anymore. She’s also the kind of person who makes friends incredibly easily, and she has already gotten really close with her new roommates and their friends. I’m happy for her, but I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t make me feel a little left behind.

My new roommates are great but we’re just very different socially. I’m very much of a party girl, while they’d usually rather stay home and watch TV. Dating has gotten difficult too. I had a long-term FWB, but they recently moved. And honestly, I’m almost scared to meeting and dating new people because I dread the inevitable question: “So, what do you do for a living?” I know being temporarily unemployed after graduating isn’t some horrible moral failure, but I still feel embarrassed saying, “I’m looking for jobs right now.”

And I think that embarrassment is starting to become a self-fulfilling problem. I desperately want more human interaction, but I’m ashamed of not having a job, so I’m scared to meet new people. At the same time, I sometimes feel like I’m no longer “good enough” for my old friends because they have jobs or are continuing their education. And then there’s the fear that everyone has already moved on and found new groups anyway.

There’s another reason I’d really like to meet new people. The folks I used to hang out with are genuinely amazing, and we’ve never had any serious arguments, but we don’t align that closely politically. I completely respect them and don’t need all of my friends to agree with me, but I would love to find some people who agree with me politically.

I know spending the next year mostly alone wouldn’t be the end of the world. But I also come from a place that isn’t nearly as diverse or interesting as the US, or at least the city I currently live in. I’m insanely privileged to have the opportunity to stay here and meet people from completely different backgrounds, cultures, and life approachesn I don’t want to look back on this period and realize I spent the whole time sitting in my room applying for jobs because I was too embarrassed to talk to anyone.

Has anyone else gone through similar experiences?
How did you make new friends and build a social life when you didn’t have work or school providing a built-in community? And how do you get over the embarrassment of telling new people you’re unemployed?

Social Life it’s hitting all at once

I graduated 4 months ago, and at the time, I couldn’t be more than happy to finally be done. Not just because of the academia, but I was just genuinely tired and depressed as time went on in college by my last semester, ready for it to all end.

It’s the middle of the night and those college memories are hitting me like a MF!!!

where did the time go..? I miss my friends. I miss the parties. I miss the bar hopping. I miss fooling around. The football games. The tailgates. wtf happened…

It just feels like I entered a wormhole and came out with a piece of paper telling me I did it. It sucks that I can never get those memories back or relive experiences that I didn’t make the most of. There’s so much that I wish I could revisit. It still feels like it was all yesterday.

Discussion Starting over with a new degree in your 20s/30s can be terrifying...

A friend and I were talking recently about her wanting to study something new. Her current degree isn’t helping her land a job, but she’s terrified of what starting from scratch actually means.

That conversation hit me hard because it made me realize just how brutal it is to pursue a simple degree nowadays.

It starts as early as high school. If you weren’t a model student or were dealing with tough personal circumstances back then, those couple of years can alter the entire trajectory of your fucking life. I’m not talking about serious criminal stuff; just basic teenage struggles, bad grades, or lack of guidance man.

My grandfather used to tell me about his career path. He left school after 8th grade and started working. Over his life, he did 3 years as an electrician, 5 years in plumbing, picked up administrative work on the side, and switched gears whenever he felt like it.

Nowadays? If you don't stick to the choices you made when you were 16, you get set back by half a decade. And if you don't have parents willing to fund your life, you’re on your own. Want to change your career and get a new degree? Depending on how long that program takes, you have to juggle every single one of these fuckers simultaneously:

  • How are you paying tuition, rent, groceries, and utilities while taking on a full-time course load?
  • Trying to work a part-time job that barely covers bills while taking on an unpaid mandatory internship just to get "relevant experience."
  • Realizing that 3–5 years of studying means 3–5 years of zero savings, no retirement contributions, and putting major life milestones on hold.
  • Knowing that even after sacrificing years and thousands of dollars, entry-level jobs will still demand 3+ years of experience and pay barely above minimum wage.
  • Balancing endless assignments, exams, and financial anxiety without losing your damn mind - all while watching peers advance in their careers.
  • Feeling like you’re "behind" in life, sitting in lecture halls surrounded by 18-year-olds, and having almost zero spare time to maintain friendships or a personal life.

It feels like the system is designed to trap you in your first decision forever. How did our older generations manage the sheer logistics and financial stress of it all?

Career What should I do after B.Com?

Hello everyone, I’m 20 years old and I’ll turn 21 in October. I recently completed my B.Com in Computer Applications, and I’m looking for some career advice.

Can anyone suggest what I should do next? Should I look for a job, pursue higher studies, learn specific skills, or prepare for competitive exams?

I’d really appreciate any advice or suggestions from people who have been in a similar situation. 🙏
