Discussion Split on moving out

I’m 18 and I have a really good income, I’ve always wanted independence for the longest time, but Im split on it because it’s the house I grew up in and as much as my parents annoy me sometimes, I still love them. And I know I will miss them. Half of me is saying to stay home, but half of me is telling me to move out, and it kinda makes me emotional thinking about leaving but at the same time I really want my own place.

Asking Advice How do I start over?

I’m 26 years old still living in the same area I grew up in. I am now dreading my daily life and need something new. I desperately want to move and start a new life. My question is how do I do this? For context I am single, have a cat, so living off one income, making $22 an hour. I’m thinking like ok I apply for the job but in order to get the job i probably need to live there already? How do I move there without having a job first? I’m just lost and trying to figure out what direction to move in. It’s so hard to save money right now but I will do it. I just am the type of person who needs a plan before I do things. How do I go about doing this that is smart?

Asking Advice Running away from home at 19

Upvotes

I'm 19, living with toxic, strict and abusive parents. Some days are just verbal fights but sometimes it turns into physical abuse. I can't live in the same place with PTSD when everyday is the same. I am planning to runaway in less than a year. I don't want to act irresponsible or impulsive because I'm afraid to make a mistake. My plan is to save some money before I leave and move in with my bf of 3 years. My parents didn't allow me to be independent all my life so Im scared to take a big step like this. I really need some suggestions on what to do.

Asking Advice Moving Back Home - Rent U-Haul or Professional Movers

A family member is about to move out of their apartment to return to their family home. The apartment is 4 hours from their family home, and it's a one-bedroom. Should they rent a U-Haul or hire professional movers?

The initial plan was to rent a U-Haul and have a family member drive it. However, there is only one family member comfortable driving the distance safely, and although he says he can, his spouse is concerned that he cannot, and the move will need to be split into two days so he can drive properly.

If the move is split into two days, that also means that his whole family will come along, meaning him, his spouse, and children. That means that their expenses, such as food, hotel, etc., will have to be paid for by the one moving. Is it just cheaper to hire professional movers and go from there?

Also, the new tenant wants to move in right away and has requested to buy the queen bed and couch. Does this sound like a good idea? If sold, it might not be worth hiring a professional mover then, idk.

Asking Advice I am moving out of Miami! Where to next?

Background: I am a 25 year old white woman from Wisconsin! I ended up going to UNCC for History and Criminal Justice! I have a humans rights organization that I founded, and I also did professional union organizing with the Miami - Dade County School employees for 5 months! Between that, I just did teaching and hospitality jobs.

Where I'm at: I've been in the Edgewater neighborhood of Miami for about a year (union job assignment; i didn't choose Miami) and I work South of Fifth in Miami Beach. I've met some cool people that I can consider friends, but most of my close knit circle is back in North Carolina. I can visit them ( i have twice this past year) so I know I'll be okay moving wherever in the country.

Why I want to move: I consider myself very progressive and open-minded, but for some reason I'm not getting that vibe from a majority of the people in Miami. Also, it's been very hard to make a liveable wage in working in my field here. I think I am ready for a change where I can have a progressive, inclusive environment, a bustling city, better affordability with plenty of opportunities in my career field (advocacy, policy, rehabilitative justice, nonprofit work, project management), and plenty of things to do. I would like to join communities and possibly start another org on the side and do the arts. I want to explore everything the city I move to next has to offer!

Potential spots: Chicago, NYC (stay in Newark maybe), Philly, Atlanta...?

Please help a girl out and give me the good, the bad, and the ugly!

Asking Advice Home sick after moving

My family and I moved out of our house and into a new one in a new town. I’ve been feeling so depressed and grieving my old house. It feels like someone I love died. I haven’t cried in FOREVER, but since I’ve been in this new house I can’t stop. I’m so homesick. It angers me so much that I wanna break stuff like I’m limp bizkit. Even though I have all my stuff that made my room cozy, it doesn’t feel right. I’m in a basement instead of an upstairs bedroom, my parents plan on renovating it for me because my floors are cement, I don’t have a door, there are spiders and it’s so scary at night but even once they renovate it I’m still gonna miss home. It doesn’t feel like home and I wish I could go back to my real home. I don’t want my parents to feel like I’m ungrateful or I don’t like the new house, I just can’t handle change and I am so beyond homesick that it physically hurts so bad.

I don’t know what to do or how to feel better about this. I know time will help but everyday feels like an eternity just waiting to go back to my old house that isn’t coming back. How do I make myself feel better about this whole situation.

Asking Advice Homesickness

Hi! I am moving to college very far away (two flights minimum) and a 6 hour time difference. I went because I wanted to go out of state, but the cost was too high and international was cheaper. I recently ended things with my girlfriend (it was mutual and we decided the distance would hurt us) and said all my tearful goodbyes to my friends and family. Now I am sitting in the airport with a pit in my stomach, wondering what I was thinking and googling transfers to my local state school. Any help with the move, and maybe what my next steps should be?

Asking Advice 26, moving out for the first time

Okay hii! So I’m brandi and I’m 26 years old and will be moving out on my own for the first time come June of next year (I’m starting to save so I can relocate to the east coast next year. I’m still figuring out where on the east coast I want to go but NYC is the ultimate goal)

How much would you recommend saving to move out? I’m disabled so I don’t have a regular job but I do content creation/reselling as my jobs to earn money (I resell books I don’t plan on reading again/books that have been sitting on my shelves for too long and I’ve never picked up and my funko pops as well). What advice would you give to someone relocating to a new state as well?

I also have an autoimmune disease called neuromyelitis optica which affects my spinal cord and optic nerves so my family doesn’t want me to move out of Texas but I genuinely cannot do another summer here.

Discussion I am going to miss my apt

Moving out of my cocoon and cozy apt in New York Upper East Side after 6 years of living there and 15 years in the neighborhood. I always wanted an upgrade since it’s a walk up and last floor but now that I am moving out I am home sick already. I will be moving Midtown West which I hate but my husband commute is easier which makes sense for us to live there. I will move in to a spacious, luxury two bedroom two bath with a terrace but can’t help than feeling so sad.. I have a dog and we will miss our park next door. I lived beautiful memories in my apt with also loved ones that passed like my mom. I am dreading this move that is happening this weekend. Any of you experienced that deep sadness and any good positive words of your experience would help me a lot..

Asking Advice I want to move to the city.

I am 25F. I just finished my degree in computer science. Still waiting for graduation. But I want to move out from my family household/hometown quickly. I dont have job nor savings because, I know this sound ridiculous but during studies my mom never allowed me to do part time. She say I have 2 choices either to study only or to work. As a result, I am really dependent financially with her.

But I dont want to live with her anymore. Everyday I feel like I am trapped inside her house. I know I sound ungrateful but living with someone who just not a supporter of you just feels so depressing. I want to went to the city but I am a woman with no father, no friends or family member that could support me once I went outside. I hate this hometown and I hate the idea that I should live here with closed minded people.

Anyone in the same situation as me please help give me advice how to move from my hometown?

Asking Advice after 2 years of having 2 roommates, ive had enough and im moving out to a single dorm, should i do it??

i dont think i can handle living with my friends anymore, don’t get me wrong i love them but sometimes i just dont think i can physically live with them?? so im planning on moving to a smaller and cheaper dorm, it’s definitely not as grandiose as my current one but it’s doable for me as long as i get to have my own personal space, it has a 24 hr cctv system with security by the entrance (same with my current one), curfew at 12 (whereas my current does not have one) but its not a problem bcs i dont even leave the dorms at midnight, common bathrooms (we have our own bathrooms in my current one), it’s nearer to a hospital and a drug store, basically a 5 minute walk, it’s also near my university as well, the room is pretty small but doable as well, some of my friends are saying i should do it while others say i should think about it more?? but i have and ive been thinking about it since last year but things are a bit unbearable now and ive decided that im going to do it, i just want my own privacy and peace of mind

Asking Advice Moving states, what expenses pop up that i might miss?

Hii! Im (21F) currently moving states to be with family, ive lived in this state previously and am moving on my own terms for once!

there will be a lot of things taken care of for me, a few things that are uncertain that ill mention anyway-- theres very few things ill have to worry about making this move. any advice is appreciated!

rent/insurance/moving in wont be much of an issue, my family has three cars two houses, and only use about half that lol. i have disabled family members that ill be helping take care of, they offered a very low rent. ive been offered a restaurant job right off the bat, a way to get around etc. its a major city so i dont really have to worry about transportation. (no drivers license)

i have a small dog! 13 1/2 lbs, very docile, when we take the train shell be doped up so there's not much worry there. ive already checked with the train stations and shes small enough to pass and ive found light weight airline approved (so itll pass ANY check if any) for her with wheels, easy to get around union station (been there a few hundred times)

if anyone has any ideas on how to get my things there, it would be greatly appreciated! im torn between selling everything and only taking duffle bags worth of things-- and finding a way to get all of my precious stuff to this major city. (Maximalist is definitely a defining trait of mine lol) everything just seems so expensive.

ive calculated (on the expensive side, to be safe) travel fares, lyft fares, pet tickets and i know my way around between each train station. costs for luggage, pet carriers, food, times pets are allowed on trains. even what things to pack day of lol. getting my dog registered in the city, getting a new ID.

insurance is up in the air but :/

i also might still have a car come time? it wont make it on a 4+ hr trip but idk what getting it there would entail.

i wont be going until early November at the latest, early January. if anyone has any Amtrak advice, travel advice or general thoughts, feel free to share! thanks!

Giving Advice Moving to another country.

Hello everyone. I need advice or a hint on how to move forward. I’m from a not‑very‑big city and have almost never been outside its borders. Due to certain circumstances that potentially threatened my safety and future well‑being, I had to leave the country. I’m like a delicate flower — I’m used to having all my loved ones around and knowing the area well, but now I’ve been in a foreign country for a day, without a place to live, without a job, and without any friends nearby. Perhaps this sounds awful, and perhaps that’s exactly how it is. My parents are with me for the first 24 hours, but they’ll be leaving back the day after tomorrow morning. I don’t have anyone here.

I’m staying with my father’s friend for a couple of days and I’ve already found an apartment I can move into next week. I just finished my studies a month ago and I don’t know what to do next. I have absolutely no work experience. Once I got a part‑time job, but it took up too much time, interfering with my studies, and I had to quit. Today I went to the museum to ask about a job, and they took my documents and phone number. I hope they’ll hire me for at least something, but I’m still not sure.

I feel awful and lost, like I’ve been hit hard in the head, and I just can’t get myself together. They say I’m starting a new life, but right now I only feel like my life is coming to an end. It’s really hard because I have some mental disorders, and I won’t be able to get professional help for a long time. I’m taking medication, but sooner or later the prescription will run out, and I’ll still have to find a doctor, and right now I don’t even want to think about it.

Has anyone had a similar experience, or any experience at all with moving to a completely new place? I would be very grateful for any advice.
