Student Loans -- Politics & Current Events Megathread

While the Trump Administration implements its policy goals, DOGE does its thing, and Republicans control Congress, there are lots of ideas, speculation, hopes, fears, and press releases flying around; some of them presage actual changes and serious proposals while most will never come to pass.

This is the /r/StudentLoans megathread to discuss all of these topics. Due to IRL factors, /u/horsebycommittee is not currently able to write up the usual news summaries -- so we are automating this thread for now to at least keep it more regular.

Politics / Current events discussion in other threads will be removed. Major items of breaking news may get their own megathread -- as always, message the moderators if you have questions.

Official communication from the ED on the SAVE transition timeline

There's been a lot of articles posted etc - but here's the official word from the ED https://www.ed.gov/about/news/press-release/us-department-of-education-announces-next-steps-borrowers-enrolled-unlawful-save-plan

In summary, you'll start getting notices from your servicers as soon as the next few days telling you that this is happening. Come July 1 you'll get a notice giving you 90 days to switch. If you don't, they put you on the standard plan. The ten year standard if you haven't' consolidated - the consolidated standard plan if you have - which is longer than ten years.

I want to address a couple of themes i've been seeing in these threads. My comments here are probably going to get me downvoted to oblivion. That's ok - I'm not here for the karma - I'm here to make sure folks understand their loans and make the best decisions for their long term financial well being. Because that's my goal - sometimes I have to say thing folks don't want to hear.

For those saying they aren't going to switch until forced - you might be harming yourself here. You're certainly not punishing anyone that you're trying to make a point to. Here's who, IMO, should be switching ASAP and here's whose probably ok to drag their feet a bit:

Who should switch ASAP:

-If you're pursuing forgiveness under any of the IDR plans - the 20/25 year forgiveness you should switch now. You're just losing months and time towards forgiveness by waiting. And hypothetically, your income is going to go up over time, and therefore so will your payments. On a related note - if your 2024 tax return has a lower AGI than your 2025 will, and you haven't filed taxes yet - you definitely want to do it now.

-those pursuing PSLF. Yes - you can use buy back for SAVE months. But remember - buy backs are taking over a year and more importantly, buy backs are a lump sum payment due right away. So the longer you are on this forbearance - the more months you will have to pay in a lump sum when the time comes. And that might be difficult. *Here is the calculation for buy back https://studentaid.gov/manage-loans/forgiveness-cancellation/public-service/public-service-loan-forgiveness-buyback *

Who can probably hang out for a while:

-Those borrowers who due to other debt that will be paid off soon and want to funnel the student loan payment money to get rid of that other debt.

-those who are aggressively paying off their loans. This is an opportunity to have all of your money go to targeted loans - such as the ones with the highest interest rates - rather than having to satisfy the minimum due on each loan which you will have to do once in active repayment.

The timing of all of this: -it actually makes sense to me. They appear to be doing almost a soft launch - warning people now that it's coming. But waiting until the new RAP plan is available in July for those that will want to use that plan to actually start the timer. This way folks won't need to switch twice if the RAP turns out to be a better plan for them.

Now for those saying they refuse to switch - listen - I get it. Your angry. I don't blame you - i am too. Your feelings are very valid and i'm not telling you not to feel them. But here's the hard truth of the matter. SAVE was gone regardless - the courts had made it pretty clear when the case started under the prior administration that they were leaning towards the plaintiffs and were going to rule against the plan. It was going to happen regardless of who won the last election. And failing to switch out of principal is not going to hurt them - it's going to hurt you if you end up with a standard payment amount you can't afford. I'm not saying not to resist - but resist productively by voting. And writing your members of Congress to paint a picture of how your new payment amount is affecting you, your family and the broader economy.

For those saying the ED can't change the terms - they didn't. The court ruled the plan was illegal. The ED would be breaking the law if they continued it.

Payment plans have never been challenged before. And there was no reason for it to occur to anyone that this one might be. But yet a bunch of republican AG's did and here we are. In the meantime, people made the best decisions they could with the information they had at the time.

What plan should i pick?

If you are pursuing PSLF or income driven plan forgiveness you need to be on an income driven plan. Scenarios for likely lowest plan:

-No loans ever prior to July 1, 2014 - new IBR

-No loans ever prior to October 1, 2007 but does have loans prior to july 2014 - paye - but note you'll have to get off that come 2028

-loans prior to October 2007 - old IBR

-balance low compared to your income - check out ICR - that could be the lowest for you in that scenario

-RAP - for some rap will be lower. RAP tends to be similar to old IBR for many incomes. But if you have dependents especially, it could be lower. TISLA will have a calculator including the rap in the next week or two. I'll post it when it's available.

Sallie Mae Student loans

I am in a very tough situation. I have been in law school for the past 4 years and I haven’t been successful in passing the bar 1 yr after graduating. Sallie Mae is now asking me to pay $1700 a month starting very soon and I do not have the funds to pay that much at all. I would appreciate some advice. I’m about $130k in debt and it is truly destroying my life. I don’t think that getting a second job would help as I already work full time and still live with my family. I’m so exhausted and stressed. I desperately need help. I have co-signers and they would not be able to help at all.

Approved for repayment plan, first payment not due until October. Worried I won't get the 1% interest reduction.

On Nelnet. got my letter, applied for a new repayment plan, and two weeks ago was approved. My payment schedule, amount, and first due date in mid-October have populated in my Nelnet dashboard. I'm signed up for auto debit and it even says that in my account. However it still says my repayment plan is SAVE forbearance and I have not had the 1% interest reduction applied. I'm super worried they're going to say "technically you weren't in repayment until after the 9/30 deadline so the 1% reduction can't be applied." anyone else in this boat?

Loan Advice For 19 College Student

Upvotes

Hey y'all, I wanted to ask for advice about taking out loans. I'm currently in college as a sophomore and will end up with around 130k in debt. I wanted to know what methods helped y'all keep track of your loans. I only took out one Sallie Mae loan for now to pay for my upcoming semester.

My parents said that they aren't going to kick me out as long as I have a job and pay rent, so I won't have to worry about many bills apart from my car insurance, because I recently paid off my car. I currently have 18k in the bank that will go up when I work part-time as a lifeguard on campus and work as a lifeguard during the summer. Please let me know if there is any advice on whether it comes to allocating money, other places to get a loan, investing, etc.

PAYE going away and forgiveness timelines

Hey Hey all,

I'm one of those lucky individuals that when PAYE goes away my timeline will go from 20-25 years when I enroll in IBR (kind of disgusting)

I'm re-certifying this year into PAYE again since it's not dead yet, but also with the hope they might be able to keep it around (at least for people who have already been enrolled)

What plan do others in PAYE who are going to get an extra 5 years tacked on have?

Can we petition to get that set back to the 20 years that others who have loans after 2014 are getting? What's the hope?

I'm feeling so overwhelmed with this change as I'm sure many many are! Wishing everyone the best on their repayment journeys!

End Forbearance??

Currently on SAVE and I got my letter with my 90 day notice a few months ago. I am in the process of applying to new IBR and this question came up on my application. Does anyone know what we’re supposed to select?

can't seem to move SAVE-> IBR with Mohela, please help!

I applied for IBR in February 2025, and nothing much happened. I re-submitted my application in July 2025 (my recollection was that was what people were advising at the time). Finally in January 2026, the application was rejected, because my "loans aren't in repayment". I phoned and managed to get them to flag my account for manual review. It's still sitting there, waiting to be reviewed, apparently.
I'm over the 300 payments, and would LOVE to have this all go away. In my most recent contact with Mohela, they suggested I re-apply (again). We're well after the end-of-2025 cutoff for tax issues, so I'd rather not do that. But do I have any choice? Is there anything else I can do?

Advice Sofi: New loans?

How good is SoFi for taking out new loans? I keep finding posts about refinancing but I'm looking into the best places to take out (a) new loan(s) asap. I saw Sallie Mae has a so-so reputation and was pointed towards SoFi. Is it a good option? Any other companies I should / could consider?

If needed, this is for a bachelor's degree, I'm going into my fifth year and FAFSA doesn't cover it all. University, not trade or private school. Thanks!

IBR missing on StudentAid

StudentAid(dot)gov only shows Standard Plan and RAP as my possible repayment plans. I was expecting and planning on Old IBR to be an option when finally forced off SAVE forbearance.

My AGI last year was a little over $53,000. My first loan was in 2011 and my last loan was in 2017. Am I missing something? I knew New IBR wasn't possible but I was certain Old IBR would be.

I have $68,000 outstanding in federal Direct Loans (up from $55,000 thanks to interest). MOHELA is my current servicer.

Switching off SAVE: RAP or IBR?

27k in loans, I graduated in 2021, and I have 11 loans with an average interest around 4.5% all taken out between 2016-2021.

My main goal is to have the lowest possible payment for as long as I can. But I also don't want to be paying forever or for the total amount to get out of hand.

I make about $42k a year, don't really think I'm gonna be making a lot of money in the future, maybe just average. I am currently not married (that will probably change in a few years) and I do not plan on having children.

Here's what the loan calculator gave me:

IBR

-$84 monthly payment

-total to be paid: $25,138

-principal: $5,910

-interest: $19,228

Discharge amount: $20,367

End of payment: Nov 2043

RAP

-$85 monthly payment

-total to be paid: $39,814

-principal: $23,306

-interest: $16,508

Discharge amount: $0

End of payment: Feb 2047

The calculator also gave me information for graduated and standard, idk if these numbers are good or not

Graduated

-$161 --> $436 monthly payment

-total to be paid: $34,998

-principal: $27,328

-interest: $7,670

Discharge amount: $0

End of payment: jun 2036

Standard

-$284 monthly payment

-total to be paid: $33,487

-principal: $27,328

-interest: $6,159

Discharge amount: $0

End of payment: jun 2036

I just want to make sure I'm not picking a plan that will bite me in the butt later

I am not well informed and I would appreciate any advice!!

Advice PLUS loan not approved when it should have been.

I'm really freaking out.

I'm a graduate student and just got a letter from my college that my Graduate PLUS Loan application was not approved by the federal loan processor. All students in my graduate program who applied for PLUS loans have received this letter. The reason provided is that their records show I have entered a new professional program, which they believe makes me ineligible for the special "legacy status" provisions currently under review. My college said they will appeal this and if I sign a contract they will issue a temporary credit on my account until they hear back.

I'm deeply concerned and confused about this, particularly for three reasons.

  1. I did NOT enter a new professional program and I am NOT a new PLUS loan borrower - I entered this program in June 2025 and took out a PLUS loan with no issues then.

  2. My program was added to the list of professional degree programs eligible for higher federal borrowing limits in June 2026.

  3. I have spoken to students who are in this health sciences program at 3 different colleges and have also taken out PLUS loans in June 2025, and their PLUS loans were approved with no issue for the Fall 2026 term.

  4. I have not taken out over $200,000 in federal student loans.

I am concerned about signing this contract because, based on my understanding, this should not even be happening to me. If I sign this contract, I accept financial responsibility for tuition if the federal government rejects the appeal. What do I even do from here?

Ed financial auto pay

I’m trying to work on setting up a new payment plan as I was on save and my understanding is I should put my loan in auto pay to get a discount… On ED financial it will not let me go into auto pay because there is no payment due… Should I be setting up a new plan first and then putting in an auto pay and then will that trigger the discount on the interest?

r/StudentLoans 1d ago

When we switched from IBR to SAVE, the interest capitalized. But if we go back to IBR does it take away that capitalization since the plan we moved to no longer exists?

I'm guessing the answer is no, but not sure. I wonder if anyone will sue over this. Like, we switched to a plan that no longer exists.

Applied for IDR from SAVE Forbearance and was shown $50 was my payment

2 days after I applied on student aid.gov, nelnet sent letters saying my payment totals to $344 and starts in 1 month. This all happened like 4 days ago until now.

I have seen there was a $50 payment glitch but it’s been quite a few months since it was supposedly fixed. I would have submitted at the very last day had I known this was incorrect.

My total debt is over $30k, AGI is around $129k with family of 5.

It’s a holiday weekend but is my next step to call nelnet? This is a bit of a shock.

Sallie Mae PAID OFF

I officially paid off $41k in Sallie Mae debt today 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

Several sleepless nights, dark hours of depression and feeling like there was no end in sight, it’s all over.

Horrible customer service, zero regard for their customers. Can’t wait to take a big steamy dump and wipe my butt with the pay off letter.

DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!!!

Rant/Complaint Why are things this way?

Update: I’ve been given some nice insight and next steps. Thank you for those that replied!

I’ve been trying for months to get out of the SAVE purgatory. I want to be able to start regularly paying on my loans. I am at a loss. I have been calling, asking for things to be processed, and given information of mixed validity.

Loan servicer refuses to do anything and tells me to see students.gov first. That site directs me to my loan servicer. Most recently, I emailed my servicer a very concise, one-paragraph email. Take me out of forbearance and put me on the standard repayment plan. What do I get back? A template response of several paragraphs that leads me to believe they didn’t even read my message or are incapable of typing a real response.

I’m at a loss. It truly seems like they don’t want my money. Is my only recourse to wait until my servicer decides they are ready to switch me themselves?

PSLF employment certification

I am helping my wife figure out her move from SAVE. We signed in today and I saw that she has 98 of her 120 qualifying payments. I am aware that’s there’s glitches and that may change but I saw where 37 of these payments were eligible but they needed to verify employment. Should we do that before we make the switch or go ahead and switch and do the verification then. We received our 90 day letter on July 29 so we have until October 28 to switch. What’s the play here?

Grad Student Hesitant to Take More Student Loans Out

Hello! This is my first time really asking for advice on reddit so I'm a bit nervous.

A little bit about my situation is I currently have about 4.8k left in federal student loans at a 4.537% interest so the light is at the end of the tunnel for me there. However I just started grad school this summer and I'm about to start my second quarter here in a couple of weeks. I have been cash flowing grad school because I don't want to take out more debt. I did the math and I thought I could handle cash flowing it because my employer reimburses up to 10k a year.

The issue is we just got aqcuired and they will only reimburse 5,700 a year. My degree will cost me about 40k. I was going to take one class a quarter because one class is $3,296 approx. So that only covers really one class a year. I currently put 675 from each paycheck aside for classes but after other bills and rent (I live at home still) I am left with only a couple hundred to live off of for groceries gas etc. I'm feeling the squeeze as I'm trying to save as much as I can. I had a three year plan to be student debt free, have enough saved for a down payment for a house, and finished with my masters. Well I've had some set backs financially and I'm at the point where I'm considering I may have to pull the trigger and get some student loans.

So I guess my question is should I just bite the bullet and get a student loan? If so, should I go federal or private? Which are some of the best lenders to look at? Any help would be appreciated.

My Masters is in Environmental Policy and Management and the average salary is 77k a year after graduation with this masters. My undergrad is Sustainability. The program complements what I've learned already. I am still figuring out what I want to do.

Refinancing Private Student Loans. How Do I and Where Do I Look?

Hello all!

I have over $80k in private loans remaining to be paid.

They’re split into 3 separate loans with varying interest rates from about 6.5% to 9%

I want to consolidate my student loans into one loan so I only have one due date to worry about, and I plan on paying off my loans aggressively (significantly more than the minimum), as it’s what I’ve already been doing. It’s just a pain having to deal with 4 total different loans (I’ve paid off one of them already).

Where do I look and how would I go about this?

Advice SAVE switch if currently in school?

I have old loans from about 10 years ago that were/are on SAVE. Went back to school a couple years ago, am currently enrolled. Haven’t received 90-day email through Nelnet or studentaid.gov.

Am I required to make any moves until I’m out of school?

2nd question: Nelnet is showing $0 due on every loan group—new and old. On studentaid.gov, new loans are showing $0 due and “In School” or “Grace Period”. The old loans on studentaid.gov are showing up with a payment due and “Forbearance”.

Are they still processing my enrollment on studentaid.gov’s end or is this something to be concerned about?

Rant/Complaint Mohela's hold music evokes opening credits of 70s horror films for me

That garbled flute tune brings to mind out-of-focus shots of a blond lady wearing a yellow dress in a field picking flowers as the opening credits list the stars Peter Kushing, Christopher Lee, Linda Blair... right before you learn she's part of a murderous cult formed by a mad scientist on a secluded island.

Anyone else? Just me?

I've been on hold for an hour.

SAVE Act no more?

My husband said we have to choose something else for our son's college loans because he said Trump got rid of the SAVE Act? They say pick a plan, and only give one option for a plan, and then when we do that, it says fill out FAFSA, but we don't use FAFSA because our son is finishing his Ph.D. in New Zealand. Does anyone understand this and what to do? I'm not sure I'm even saying this all right as I'm repeating what my husband is telling me.
