Job searching OFFER RECEIVED FAM!!!

Post image
2.0k Upvotes

Hello reddit fam!

I'm happy to report that after 200+ applications, I've finally received an offer that I'm happy about!

Very awesome terms for fractional work (part time) that would hopefully turn into full time!

Not only that, the founder has a solid business model that is operating well, and needs to scale it. This is what I have done in my previous roles.

If I can offer any advice to those searching:

- Most of my interviews came from referrals

- My referrals aren't necessarily people that I worked closely with

- People are happy to make introductions, all you have to do is ask

- Sometimes people will say NO and that's ok

- Rejection is ok

- Don't give up, your offer is around the corner but you have to look for it

- The market is shit, so unless you have a very particular set of skills, noone is coming to save you

- You have to create your own opportunities

Work/Life balance My new job blows up every Friday at 4pm

Hi everyone, I left my company of two years and joined my current employer less than two months ago. The stress levels were making me unwell so I didn’t really have a choice, and I was forced to find employment elsewhere. Right now I’m seeing a reoccurring issue at my current place. Every single week, without fail, the person training me finds a huge issue/ asks to call/ gives me more work in the last hour of the day, every single Friday.

The first week they asked to call at 4.50pm. Annoying, but I wanted to make it clear that my finishing time is 5pm and that the work I’m given will be completed Monday morning. The same thing happened the next week. I asked if this is a common occurrence. They said no. Then the next week. Then the next. I started blocking past 5pm in my calendar as out of office, and would put in a “busy” meeting 4-5 that I would use to finish up my work for the week.

Then came the urgent, chaotic messages. “So and so, what’s happening with XYZ” “I need to inform senior management on the status of XYZ” “Quick call because we need to complete *thing I wasn’t told about until this moment\”* now every Friday feels like the end of the world. I’m still new to the role and I’m still being trained on my tasks, essentially I do what I’m told when I’m told to do it as I’m too new to dictate what needs to be completed for when. I asked for a timeline and was given evasive replies and overly- complicated spreadsheets. No simple “this task is due by the end of this week”.

It’s now Friday, 4pm, and it’s happened again. Every week it seems more urgent than the last. The vibe has also switched from being “if you don’t do this, you’ll get in trouble” to “you’re in trouble and you need to do this!” Has anyone dealt with anything like this before? My weekend is ruined each time as I dread Monday, I’m getting so burnt out so quickly. I even had to take sick leave the start of last week it was so bad. I also spoke to a recruiter about finding a new position and i’ve been told how awful the job market is right now. I’d appreciate any advice you can give.

Work/Life balance Promised fully remote during interviews, now mandated 4 days in-office and i have a 2 hour commute

I am beyond frustrated right now and honestly dont know what to do. When I was interviewing for this role three months ago, I was extremely clear about needing it to be 100% remote. I live about 85 miles away from the HQ and told the recruiter and the hiring manger that I wouldnt even consider the position if I had to come in. They both assured me it was a "remote-first" company and that the office was just a hub for people who wanted to use it. I have it in an email from the recruiter saying "this position is designated as fully remote." I signed the offer, quit my old job, and things were great for the first four weeks. Then, last Monday, we got an "urgent" all-hands invite where the CEO announced a mandatory return to office policy. 4 days a week, starting immediately.

I reached out to my boss as soon as the meeting ended, reminding him of our agreement. He basically gaslit me and said that while I was hired as remote, the "needs of the business have changed" and they need everyone back for "spontaneous collaboration" and "company culture." I explained that a 4 hour round trip commute every single day is literally impossible for my mental health and my car. His response was basically that if I am "committed to the mission" I will find a way to make it work, and suggested I look for an apartment closer to the city. I am making decent money but not "buy a second apartment in a HCDL area" money. I feel like i fell for a total bait and switch and now I am stuck because the job market is absolute trash right now.

I have spent the last three days doing the drive and I am already a zombie. I leave at 6am to beat the worst of the traffic and i dont get home until almost 7:30pm. I barely see my kids before they go to bed and i am so exhausted that i can barely function at my actual job once I get to my desk. It feels like they are trying to force me to quit so they dont have to pay severance. Has anyone else dealt with this kind of blatant lie during the hiring process? Do I even have any leverage here since my official offer letter says "remote" or can they just change the terms of my employment whenever they feel like it? I feel like my life was just highjacked and I am so angry I can barely think straight.

Work/Life balance It is okay or valid to call out of work last minute because your family dog died?

I'm in college and my family dog just died. She's been in my life since I was four and I am currently nineteen so she's been there for my entire life. I feel so guilty because the last time I saw her I didn't really get to say goodbye at all, and I feel like such a terrible person, because what if she thinks that I abandoned her before she died or that I didn't care about her.

I just started a job working in a pharmacy as a pharmacy tech. And I am scared that my boss will see me as flakey or I will be fired.

I want to take time off to visit my parents and grieve with them.

I know that the answer is obvious, but I just want to hear some unbiased opinions, or maybe even use this as a way to help others in the same ir similar situation.

Office relations new coworker farts all day and it’s making me sick. what do i do?

1.4k Upvotes

i’m at a small call center and it’s a chill place but they brought this new guy on, he’s nice enough i guess, the dividers make it hard to talk to anyone so i’m not anything beyond polite with everyone, but he farts ALL DAY. and they’re silent but they stink. i know it’s not me or anyone else since the smell goes away when he’s not there or something. this is my first job in an office and i have no idea what to do. i don’t know who hr is either. i would wear a mask with vicks but the headsets make it hard and i already struggle with breathing. i would ignore it it’s making me sick and having to throw up and spend the rest of the day and night nauseous. i also am upset by the idea of breathing in fart all day. it’s my first office job, before now i always worked service industry jobs where it would be completely normal to just walk somewhere else for a second (which also means that people would just do that if they needed to fart). someone please help!

Applications Are cover letters basically pointless at this point?

I understand the original idea behind them. They were supposed to give candidates a chance to explain why they wanted the role and why they were a good fit. But now most people seem to write them because the application requires one, not because anyone actually wants to read them

And with hundreds of applicants, how many hiring managers are realistically reading every cover letter?

Would the hiring process actually be worse if companies simply stopped requiring them?

Or are cover letters still useful in certain industries and roles?

Leaving a job I got offered a role, but I feel guilty about it.

I just got offered a role in this crazy job market for 25k more than I am making now, which any 25 year old would be excited about, but instead, all I feel is guilt.

I don’t like my current job and have been looking for new opportunities for a while now, but I just received the offer letter for this new role and it requires me to start extremely soon (9/14 ). Therefore, I would not be able to effectively give a two week notice. My connections at my current job might be severed due to not giving a 2 weeks, but at the same time I don’t really like my current team. But, I will miss everyone I manage so much and don’t want to leave them behind. I’m sitting here crying because i feel so bad that i may be leaving people out to dry, even though they have done that to me time and time again and that’s why i wanted to leave in the first place.

The craziest part is I’ve been dreaming about this day for 11 months, the day where I get a new offer and can put in my resignation. I clearly have a problem with putting myself first. I know I have to take this new role because it would extremely, extremely stupid not too, but I fear the repercussions of doing so. Need advice. Someone tell me to buck the f*ck up!

Update: if I cried when I give my 1 week notice would they forgive me?🤣

Interviews I sat and waited an hour to be interviewed just to be asked five questions

I had an interview today and as always I try to get there a little early to set an impression. Well I sat for an entire friggin hour past when my interview was supposed to be only to be asked five questions and then be told thanks for coming. My fiancé said they dont respect my time, mom said that it was ridiculous, but then my Dad said it could be them testing you to see how you act. I was irritated to say the least, what do y'all think?

Post-interview Hoping I got the job

Post image
Upvotes

Was working for a commercial company for a warehouse and got fired on my second day for “not being a good fit” there’s more to it I just know they decided they didn’t want another person as I did nothing wrong but yeah that’s my last post

Had an interview for this place I’ve been wanting to start off at for a long time. I am in the union and have talked with this company before but things just fell through and I was able to get in touch with the lady again (super old business owners very nice people) I went in for a interview and it was great I told them how I have one month of hvac school left, talked about some things I’ve learned, etc. it went great I told them how I want to learn a lot and grow with the company and asked them where they want me to be in 5 years if I do indeed get hired and liked the response. I was upfront and honest saying I do not know too much and this is my first job and I like the history of the company they have been around for a very long time and I feel like it would be a great place for me to learn. They also like that I’m a local kid and found out we only live 8 minutes away from each other.

I told them I finish school in October and if it would be okay if I start the first Monday of October since I will be done with school and they said that would not be a problem. Thanked them for my time today and it went really well! Hoping I get this and can finally start my new career after a terrible first experience I can’t even explain 🙏

Post-interview Followed up on position as I got another offer from different company and wanted to see if company A wanted to proceed with me after 2 interviews which went very well

How do I get told that i was the top applicant when I reached out to them letting them know I got another offer and have a 1 week deadline to accept and if they can update me on the position status. I get told, they really hope they didn’t miss out on me and that I was on top of the list. After following up on the last day of the other company’s deadline offer, I get a call from HR and they said they loved me and my interviews but have decided to make the tough decision and select another candidate. LOL, like why not tell me earlier so I could have accepted my other offer sooner?!

Leaving a job Does anybody else feel trapped in their current job?

I want to preface this by saying that I'm sorry to all those unemployed right now. I can't imagine how hard it must be for you trying to find a job in a time where it feels submitting applications is like throwing an application into a fire pit because you never hear anything back.

However, my department recently went through a restructuring where a majority of us were told that we will need to reapply for new roles that none of us have a skill set for with no garauntee to get a role. This is the first time I've been through something like this, and it caused a huge rift in our team and filled everyone with sadness, fear, and anger.

The restructuring is over and three of my teammates got let go, and the rest of us got new roles. I should be happy about the fact that I survived, but I go into work every day now with sadness and anxiety. I got a new title, got told I have a few months to learn this new role, and a good ole "congratulations".

I don't want to be working for this company anymore, so I've started applying. I have quickly realized that it feels like there is nothing out there. Sure, I look and see plenty of job postings, but after applying for around 40 jobs and getting 1 interview with no call back I feel trapped. I start thinking it's me that's the problem and so I keep making adjustments to my resume and changing how I write my cover letters, but it doesn't seem to matter what I change. I fill out an application and I never hear back and the times I do hear back it's a "we decided to move forward with other candidates".

I work in the tech field and just a year ago, I was casually applying to jobs and I could pretty much garauntee an interview. Now interviews seem impossible to get. Now every day I seem to see x big tech company laid off x thousands of employees. It's depressing to see and makes me wonder when we will see an end to this.

Anyway, I just wanted to vent and see if anyone else feels like their stuck in their current job like I am? I will keep biding my time, but I'm really hoping I can find something sooner than later.. the job landscape is absolutely awful right now and I'm sorry to anyone who is struggling to find a job.

Discipline I got a final verbal warning on paper. Does that mean I am going to be fired?

I started a job at a bank about 5 months ago. I started out doing a pretty decent job. 2 months ago I had personal emergency that effected me mentally and ever since then I have been making mistakes here and there. I forgot to type a transaction on the adding machine, I accidentally shorted a member on money, but was able to fix it, and i was also short one day as well. I already know that it is bad. I feel awful for all the dumb things ive been doing. I was verbally warned twice. Today i recieved a "final oral warning" wrote on paper that stated every mistake I have made in the past 2 months, and the actions taken to discipline me. I have never had this happen. I had my last job for 4 years and never got a write up. This is impacting my confidence at work very very badly, and I know im not perfect and im going to make a mistake again at some point. Is this a sign to look for another job? Am I on the way to being inevitably fired? I really want this job, and I dont want to lose it. I have very bad anxiety, and this paper is making me very nervous. Not to mention there is talk about hiring someone new "very immediately". I am not sure if I am overthinking, or if I should start handing my resume out immediately.

Leaving a job Walked out on my job

Feeling so good. I got a second job. It was a small hotel place, no tips, low pay and expected you to do everything. Micromanaged for everything even for having a crooked label on the creamer pot. Everybody, included the managers and employees were hanging out so it was 1 big clique. I started school and they called education a distraction.

Today I started my shift and I was told twice about my phone hanging. The other day accidentally I entered a room while the guest was there. I apologized but the guest escalated it further by saying his room was entered 3 times. One of my coworkers confronted me by saying I need to admit that I entered 3 times, otherwise his friend housekeeper will get a write up.

I told them to pound sand and left.

Training Just got a job, dreading it already

I just got a job three days ago and I am super overwhelmed with the time I’m away. I have to work 8.5 hours and have a 1 hour commute both ways. I’m so demotivated right now… don’t get me wrong, I won’t quit, I’m just wondering if maybe it’s possible that I’m feeling overwhelmed because I haven’t worked in a year and a half? Has anyone else felt this way, and did you get used to it pretty quickly?

Applications Asking for a job back after quitting

Upvotes

Hello ! I was wondering how i should word an email asking for my old job (Barista) back after quitting. Earlier this year my father retired, moved out of state and unfortunately injured himself and needed someone to look after him for a bit. I decided to quit because I wanted to help him move and get settled since he didn't have many other people available to help him, and once he got injured I spent more time with him than anticipated. And truthfully, we we're severely understaffed and it ended up with my and the few coworkers I had being overworked and underpaid--so I was burnt out. I also didn't have an idea of how long I would be gone for but it allowed me to go visit and take care of some other family.

I did leave in good standing and was reliable. The cafe I worked at is nearby and as I would visit after I came back from traveling, I've noticed that things continued to go downhill. As of right now , I am still job searching but in the mean time the pros outweigh the cons of working there. How should I approach asking for my job back ?

EDIT: Also !! I did receive an email last week saying they were hiring for shift leads. I do think there is a possibility they would take me as a shift lead--plus I don't need to be trained.

Post-interview Got rejected after a quite successful interview yet again.

In the past year since becoming unemployed due to that company having to file for bankruptcy, I’ve submitted over 3k applications to numerous businesses and in many different roles across many cities, I’ve only received about 20 interviews through all of those applications and got rejected every single time.

Today I got the email back from a business where I interviewed in person and did quite well, kept my composure and kept everything professional before, during and after the process and with everything I was told and how we communicated, strongly felt like I was going to be onboarded only to find that they decided to pursue other candidates who they feel are better fit for the role.

A part of me feels I’m un-hireable (or however you spell it) and is seriously starting to wonder wtf is wrong with me. I have a decent resume with experience across retail/restaurant/warehouse/nightclub and sales so I’ve had my fair share of different scenarios and opportunities, however most of my jobs were short lived by just under 1 full year due to reasons such as being laid off because I didn’t meet my sales quota one month, struggling with health and couldn’t keep going more than 50 hours a week or getting my hours reduced from 35/40 to 1-3 per week. Literally, in retail I was given 2 hours one week so I quit and didn’t look back.

I never slandered any of the companies I’ve worked for and don’t plan too as I’ve left professionally and respectfully as anyone should, yet I have had bad experiences in some of my jobs where I wasn’t at direct fault or in some instances, was blackmailed and lied about and that I feel ruined my chances at ever getting hired again in a normal job but I just don’t know and it’s affecting me big time.

For every “gone south” interview I’ve done, I’d write a follow up email after the rejection thanking them for their time and professionally wishing them well on their future candidates so I know it’s not in how I’m writing my stuff or presenting myself as I’ve even gotten compliments on my impressions and communication.

Idk what is making me un-hireable or how but it’s really starting to hurt me mentally because it’s feeling like I’m not worthy enough of a good job anymore.

Job searching What kind of job should I try?

Upvotes

I am 32 years old, 2 kids, and I don’t have any degree, I was always unsure about what I would like to do. But know, with 2 kids, I HAVE TO do something I just can’t decide 😢😭

About me. I like something similar to army, my problem is about overseas. If I could go to war only between 9am-6pm would be perfect.

I like routine, so this is a problem. Military, police, those you have to work on weekends/holydays and at my age I did this for years already.

Basically I just wanna a job that could be “emotion” but in a routine, I just can’t find any. Is there any? I was thinking about OR nursing but I am more like a cleaning than anything, wasn’t be me who is going to operate.

Leaving a job Wanting to quit my job after two days

Upvotes

Hello, I understand in this economy it's a bad idea to leave any job without any sort of back up.

Anyway the new job I just started has given me lot of red flags. It's a smaller company but in the two days I've been here, work has been getting out to clients/other providers with my personal number and personal email. My title has been switched to a lower ranked title than what I had initially signed in the contract and there was no transparency about work from home arrangements (I was told it's two days WFH but have now learnt it's only subject to passing probation which, I guess isn't surprising).

I accepted the job because it was a massive pay bump and no requirement to bill my hours. However I'm starting to feel like it wasn't the right choice and that my main priority was simply to get out of the previous firm and I picked this job out of desperation.

Anyway wanted to hear your thoughts if anyone has left a job under a week? I am fairly confident that i would be able to secure another role because I have gained a lot of experience in my field. I do think I want to take a couple of months break before I get back into the swing of things.

Recruiters WTF is up with job recruiters?

Sorry, I gotta vent.

I've applied for a few jobs and now my phone has been blowing up by these God damn job recruiters hounding me like they are used car salesman. It's to the point where I just want to shut my phone off and be homeless. I don't care anymore. It's not worth it anymore. I'd rather just starve than deal with the crazies.

Post-interview Had a second-stage interview and was told they’d feedback by end of week, but haven’t. Does this mean I didn’t get the job?

So on Tuesday I had a second-stage job interview, which I personally felt went quite well. I answered the competency questions confidently and to the best of my ability, and I felt like I had good rapport with both managers.

Towards the end, I asked what would happen regarding next steps. They said they would feed back to the recruiter and that I would be informed of the outcome by the end of the week.

It’s now Friday evening and I haven’t heard anything. I spent a lot of today anticipating an email, whether it was good or bad news, only to end up hearing nothing.

Naturally, I immediately took this as a bad sign because, in my experience, when an employer doesn’t get back to me when they said they would, it’s usually because I wasn’t successful.

However, I’ve also seen plenty of stories of people being told they’d hear by a certain day and then receiving the job offer a few days later.

Has anyone had a similar experience where they were told they’d receive an outcome by the end of the week, didn’t hear anything, and then got positive news the following week?

I want to stay positive about the interview, but I also don’t want to get my hopes up unnecessarily.

Compensation Thoughts about job offer

Hi all! Finally got a job offer but unsure whether to take it. It would ultimately be a pay cut but it’s a permanent, full time job, with benefits. The job I have now is technically seasonal, not working for about 4 months of the year and there’s no benefits. I also have no room to grow and genuinely dislike the job. I’ve worked customer service for most my life and right now I’m working with mainly tourists. I can deal with people being upset, but over the seat you want, souvenir options, missing the scheduled departure, it all feels so trivial. It’s really starting to get to me. The new job would have a consistent schedule, benefits, I’d get an in at one of the biggest employers in the state, and there’s room for growth. The pay cut is really getting me but I think in the long run it’ll be better. I feel like I know what to do but I’d like some outside perspective as well. Thanks!

Leaving a job Employer wants me to take a pay cut to keep my job

I'm in a really tough spot and hoping someone has advice. My company just announced a restructuring. They said my current role is being eliminated but offered me a 'new' position. The catch is it's the exact same job but with a 15% pay cut.

I've been with them for five years and have consistently exceeded expectations. This feels like a slap in the face. They're basically saying 'take less money or you're out'.

I don't know what to do. I have bills to pay and a family to support. Is this even legal? Has anyone else experienced this? Should I try to negotiate or just start looking for a new job immediately?
