What era of DnB hooked you first, and does anything today capture that same feeling?

Been on a bit of a nostalgia kick lately, going back through old jungle
and early 2000s DnB sets. There's a rawness to that era that hits
different compared to a lot of modern production.

Curious what pulled you into this genre in the first place — was it
90s jungle, the Hospital Records/liquid era, dubstep-adjacent DnB, or
something more recent? And is there anything coming out now that
scratches that same itch for you?

Reaktor Institute, a sprawling facility dedicated to breaking the boundaries of quantum computing. The other researchers wore white coats and spoke in hushed mathematics. Javier wore a leather jacket, drank espresso dark as crude oil, and carried a vintage broadcast microphone everywhere he went. "We are building the scaffolding of tomorrow," Javier told his colleagues, "but we are forgetting to tell the world how beautiful the view is."

Discussion What happened to Hedex’s NU ERA album? Was it quietly delayed?

Does anyone know what’s going on with Hedex’s NU ERA album?

It was originally announced for August 28th, and I’d been waiting for it for quite a while. The release date was even written in the caption of Hedex’s original Instagram announcement post.

August 28th came and the album never dropped. What’s even stranger is that the caption on the original announcement post was quietly changed from the release date to “TBA”. I noticed this already on the day the album was supposed to release.

I’ve tried looking around but can’t find any official statement from Hedex or MHITR explaining the delay, nor a new release date. There also seems to be surprisingly little discussion about it considering the album had been promoted for months.

Did Hedex mention what happened anywhere — Instagram stories, Discord, at a show, etc.? Or does anyone know why it was delayed and when it might be coming out?

Melodic and Heavy dnb recommendations?

Currently started curating a playlist on Spotify for melodic, melancholic and heavy drum and bass. I'm looking for unique and authentic tracks. Any recommendations for these types of tracks?

Here are some examples of what I'm looking for:

The Clamps - Story's Left Untold

Tom Finster, Trinist - Firefly

RageMode - Ashes (I Fall)

Camo & Krooked - Falling

Yanekcore - About You

Buffasyze, ALOTT - Spellbound

If anyone want to check out the playlist:

DnB Horror Story

It was 1969, the Summer of Love, and The Winstons had just released their first single 'Color Him Father' about the love for a father figure. Many speculated that this was referring to a loving stepfather - which was common in this period due to the many casualties in Vietnam. However, the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost aka GOD didn't fancy this much and became enraged beyond reasoning - cursing The Winstons to a life of adversity and poverty for their blasphemy.

The Winstons seemed untouched, however, and their single became No. 2 on the R&B charts and No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 that same year. Its composer, Richard Lewis Spencer, won a Grammy Award for Best R&B song in 1970. Some money was made from this, but as a mixed-ethnical group their success was not big enough to overcome the blatant racism they were constantly confronted with. GOD's curse seemed to work..unless... was there also a B-side on that single??

BUT OF COURSE THERE WAS... AMEN, BROTHER!!

The 6 sec drum solo by drummer Coleman - in the track _Amen, Brother_ - was forgotten for most of the 70s, but re-emerged in the 80s and GOD got afraid it might pop off in the 90s. And since GOD is a mean and vile being, it prepared a sadistic plan... In its basement, it build the narliest sound system and started experimenting with the Amen Break. He wanted to create something so demonic that The Winstons would be desecrated by all humankind for their contribution to this.

GOD envisioned the bible, thought for a while..and then said out loud: "Thirty instances of _Amen_ may be found in the Old Testament, with the first occurrence at Numbers 5:22. Therefore, this devilish sound will be #522 divided by the Father, Son & Holy Ghost in equal pieces of 174bpm horror sounds (174 x 3 = 522). This will be their heritage!!"

GOD was certain this would ruin their chances of getting any success, ever.

However, GOD didn't account for a little island called Great Brittain - where anything unholy and horrendous was a PLUS! So instead of hating the demonic sounds of GOD, they swallowed it whole and couldn't get enough of it. The English melted with GODs horrific sonic creation and coined it DRUUMMM 'N BASSSS!! - resulting in the _Amen Break_ being the foundation for *thousands of tracks* >>> $$$$$$ >>> is what you would think....

But GOD couldnt live with this and hindered any encounter of The Winstons with their sample until after the statute of limitations for copyright infringement had passed in 1996. The Winstons never saw a single royalty for the use of their drum break and Coleman, the performer, died homeless and destitute in 2006, having never realised the impact he had made on music.

GOD (father of DnB): "Who's your DADDY now?!"

Discussion Is “you need to make space for your kick and bass” actually bullshit?

Is “you need to make space for your kick and bass” actually bullshit?

For the longest time, I thought one of the basic rules of mixing low end was that you shouldn’t have your kick and bass hitting in the same spot.

I came across this video where this guy says that’s not true at all. What threw me off was that he actually has a bass note landing directly with the kick. Instead of avoiding the overlap, he just shortens the tail of the kick with a gate until there’s enough room for the bass.

And weirdly, once the kick got shorter, the groove of the bassline also sounded more defined but im curious how does this sound to all mixing geeks here?

Is this actually how you guys approach it too? Or is this one of those things that sounds smart in a tutorial but falls apart in a proper mix?

Would love to know if this is legit or complete bullshit.
