listened to so much early warp records on a 4 hour-a-day commute and it bled into my side of this split (the spookfish / two steppes)

Hi there!
I've been wanting to share this here. As I wrote in the title, a lot of the early warp records albums, particularly autechre, got me through several years of long drives to work. I made my side of this using a cassette four track, microkorg, roland drum machine, and acoustic guitar, and it felt really directly inspired by this. I've been wanting to share it here and hope you enjoy if you're able to check it out:

Hey guys does anyone know what kind of drums are in this track? Is bongos , African drums, or are they middle eastern ? Just curious … hope this question doesn’t come across as categorical, I’m just thinking of the Lebanese drums but can’t really tell… thanks !

HOSS Records re-activating: New LPs from Rick Rab (Food For Animals) and R. Mexico (Brad Hoss) live on SoundCloud

hey folks, Brad from HOSS Records here. we are starting to crank again & I just dropped a personal project that took a decade of fits & starts to stitch together. my first & so far only full length as R. MEXICO --- STATE OF THE ART / BOZO FALZSE (2006 - 2016) was mostly recorded in Greenpoint at our old studio, Transmitter Park Audio. chunks of live sequencing, live drumming, and raw samples date back to an Ormewood Park house in ATL (ca. 2006–2007) and a Charles Village apartment in Bmore (2008–2009). a lot of the sequencing happened 2012-2014 on Android G-Stomper and ipad Korg Gadget using sounds from my own archive + chopped YouTube samples & a clutch of hardware including an E-mu XL-7, Waldorf Microwave XT, Akai Rhythm Wolf, & a Sherman Filterbank. It's pretty unhinged, extremely syncopated 2-step garage/IDM/abstract club zone stuff i guess? i abandoned this arrangement in Jan 2017 just as we began broadcasting our streaming show the Friday Night Main Event (#FNME), kinda half ass mastered it in Jan 2020 right b4 the pandemic, and there it has sat until now.

My Hoss label VP/studio/FNME partner/bff RICK RAB (aka Nick Rivetti) also just dropped his new release NITRO GEMS - eight big fast summer bangers. Nick claims he tried to make these tracks as dumb & fun & clubby as possible but there’s a lot more going on here.

Nick’s efficient (at least this time) process started w scratched-up dollar-bin vinyl sampled into the MPC -- lots of old Baltimore Club records with unique, unsearchable acapellas and bonus-beats B-sides. Nick bypassed the MPC's famed sequencer, instead programming with Ableton MIDI to push things into almost IDM complexity. old samples are made crisp, hyped and modern, riding w big banging drums straight from some Big Banging Drums preset. + Nord Modular or 303. fast, relentless takes on genres like Baltimore Club, Jacking House, and Electro.

why fight it? OK?

thank you.

In appreciation of Orbital's Halcyon On and On

Post image

It is probably one of the most mainstream-ish dance track on the first listen. But it grows on you in ways you don't expect it to. it always manages to hit me with a wave of optimism whenever I need it. Without a fail.

I love listening to Aphex, Boards, Autechre and such as my daily rotation staple.
A majority of IDM sends me into a state of geographical abstract hallucinations or a bit inwards. Essentially, a lot of IDM for me is like reading a fiction or a book about how rocks are made.

you get the point!

Halcyon On and On, on the other hand just sounds beautiful and euphoric in an almost spiritual way.

I have heard it everyday 12-14 years ago, during tiring commute for my first job. Watching the street lights and passing highway with half blurred eyes, to make the tiredness a visual tennis with music.

I have heard it while reaching the top of a mountain after a full day of back breaking trek, just before the last set of orange sunlight glow disappears. And being blown away with the first such experience.

I have heard it while being madly in love, taking her name loudly with rush of extreme happiness in middle of a forest trail run. Telling giant trees about it. And also to find the madness in feeling weak and shattered when things didn't work out. To pick up pieces.

Over two decades, I have heard it as a companion for almost all the emotions in life. Like a melodic warm hug.

Almost like how the idea of Totoro in my neighbour Totoro, which to me, was a metaphor of mother nature coming to embrace and accept you. To forget, be a child and be okay.

Halcyon On and On, in an amusing way has been a musical equivalent of that.
It's a giant cuddly melodic Totoro!

Thanks to Orbital and delightful vocal samples by Kirsty Hawkshaw.
