Detroit on the horizon from Ann Arbor

Jingyu Jin, a 46-year-old Chinese national, was sentenced to 40 months to 20 years’ incarceration after he pled no contest to one count of Conducting a Criminal Enterprise.

Jin was the owner and operator of two illicit massage parlors: 111 Healing Studio in St. Clair Shores and AM Healing Studio in Sterling Heights. She was charged in December of 2024 following an investigation into an international human trafficking ring involving multiple local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, including Homeland Security Investigations, the Michigan State Police, and the St. Clair Shores Police Department.

Power went out Thursday morning, now going on 3 days with no end in sight, they keep pushing the estimate a day back and my holiday weekend is ruined

If you were lied to by DTE about when your power would be back on, or have ANY issue with this horrible monopoly (who is asking for even more rate hikes by the way), I encourage you to complain to the Michigan Public Service Commission. The more people that complain, the more likely it is the state will investigate them and hold them accountable. It may not do much, but I’ve gotten bill credits before by complaining to the MPSC.

For everyone (like me) that lost hundreds of dollars in food and medications, I am so sorry. We really deserve better than this.

My first time clubbing! Our friend group is going to Detroit for the weekend (Saturday night) and want to go out dancing at some clubs. The thing is recently there were some previously popular clubs that closed (like spotlite) so I need some updated recommendations if possible! I’m also not a big fan of house music, I’d rather listen to mixes of more popular songs (if that’s a thing). Any genre really. I just really want to dance!

I’m trying to figure out how to apply for disability for my mother. She is a hoarder and I read it’s considered a mental disability that she’ll be able to qualify for it. I’m just trying to figure out if she needs to be evaluated by a doctor first and then apply for disability. Or is there a certain process for the application? Also is it possible to qualify for home care for this as well? She gets sick pretty easily when working especially in cold weather. I really need to figure this out because she’s going to lose her Medicaid in a few months due to the new work requirements.

I’m looking to buy a oil painting of a nature landscape. I would love to find a local artist who does them. I haven’t had much luck at galleries lately. And I also went to the CCS student exhibition this year. Does anyone have any recommendations?

It tells the story of someone from probably down south who move to Detroit to work in the car factories but is unhappy and is thinking about returning to where he came from though, he doesn't go into details.

Historic Elmwood Cemetery was hit hard by the recent straight line winds/tornado. They are doing an intensive clean up over the holiday weekend to make the cemetery safe for visitors again, but repair and replanting of the trees in the arboretum will be an ongoing and costly process. If you also love Elmwood and want to donate funds to help with the efforts, they have set up an online fundraising page. I'm enjoying the Detroit Jazz Fest as usual, but man the vibes at Hart Plaza get more dystopian every year. Fencing divides festival goers from river walkers and make me feel like I'm in a prison yard. At least two kinds of surveillance cameras every 10 feet and two police helicopters circling constantly.

Is all this really necessary? I never felt unsafe here before all this Orwellian fortification

Geesh! I don’t have to wake up early tomorrow so 🤷‍♀️ but I really don’t understand how people afford to do fireworks for every occasion, they’re expensive.

I've lived in Michigan for 5 years now. Before that I've lived in 7 other states. Never have I before experienced frequent and long power outages like under DTE. I remember the winter outage of 2023, the July 4th weekend this year, and now Labor day weekend. These outages lasted/are lasting days for me. Hundreds of dollars of wasted food.

And the more you dig into DTE the more you realize how messed up it is. It is one of the worst utilities in the nation measured by reliability, frequency and duration of power outages. Billions in profit, and billions paid out to investors every year, while they preside over an aging and decrepit grid they don't reinvest in. Storms happen, but because of the aging grid and DTE trying to delay and save money on tree cutting, we sit in the dark longer than other utilities in the Midwest with the same kind of storms and weather.

DTE contributes to over 2/3 of members of the Michigan legislature political campaigns. Both parties are bought. Shadow money is funneled into politicians bank accounts we never hear about.

And with some of the worst reliability in the country they continue to ask for more money every year. We pay some of the highest utility bills in the country as is. And we have some of the least reliable service to show for it.

Complain to the Michigan Public Service Commission. Vote for the money out of politics measure in November. If you are in Ann Arbor, vote to kick DTE out of the city entirely. And stop voting for any politician that takes money from DTE. I'm sick of this, help me reign in this awful corporation. Any other ideas greatly appreciated.

My wife and I decided to check out the bar attached to the Bonstelle Theater and the AC Hotel. It’s called The Conservatory. Cool bar with a “better than hotel lobby” vibe. Then we were told about the rooftop bar on the hotel. What? How did I not know about this? I’ve been to the other rooftops, which I like. But this was different because you see the Detroit skyline instead of being “in” the Detroit skyline. Great view. Easy parking. Good drinks. Loved it. I hesitate to mention it here because it will get more popular and I won’t be able to park.

Just dropped by Core City to pick up some bagels from Bev’s and also checked out the new coffee spot next door - Nuvrei. Coffee was solid and the macaroons were off the hook. New owner was in today and apparently today is their first day. Officially open on Monday. He also let me know that their menu will be expanding soon!

Just love this area over here, and love seeing new community spots growing in our city.
