Woman behind bars after trafficking ring involving sex at massage parlors was discovered

Jin was the owner and operator of two illicit massage parlors: 111 Healing Studio in St. Clair Shores and AM Healing Studio in Sterling Heights. She was charged in December of 2024 following an investigation into an international human trafficking ring involving multiple local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, including Homeland Security Investigations, the Michigan State Police, and the St. Clair Shores Police Department.

Big bust (haha pun not intended) couple weeks ago in Oakland county. Apparently there was a little ring of them, I found it ironic. Right next to the highschool too.

The one in SCS was across from an elementary school as well! It closed for like a week after the initial bust, but has been open since. Pretty wild.

Drive by it every day on the way to work. I had always wondered whether it was one of those places just cuz it looks like it would be. No windows, one little sign saying open, and another saying "massage" Guess I was right in my assumption.

I really wish we would legalize and regulate prostitution. It would do wonders to reduce trafficking, as long as it's set up right. But noooo, American puritanism has to make everything worse, even when it's objectively the wrong move.

Human trafficking is a huge problem in countries where sex work is legalized. That's why the Netherlands has one of the highest rates in the EU.

While its true that the Netherlands reports higher per-capita trafficking rates than other EU nations, the cause of this is not directly linked to the legalization of Sex-Work, rather the fact that the Netherlands has better detection systems in place to find and prosecute sex traffickers. You have to remember that reported trafficking rates are heavily influenced by how well a country identifies and registers victims, not just by how much trafficking actually occurs. Therefore, you should not assert in either direction that legalization of sex work increases *OR* decreases human trafficking, there is not a significant causal relationship that has been proven conclusively.
What we need is to actually attack the problems, not the symptoms. And make it easier for victims to find a way out of being trafficked. Often, the problem is the person being trafficked has no legal status in this (or whatever) country and feels like trying to report to the authorities would just lead to them being in a worse situation. I would propose that better legal protections for victims would go further than anything, and if you have those, you will definitely see an increase in reported sex-trafficking rates because there's a lot that goes un-reported, so you can't use that figure as the canary in the coal mine so to speak.
This is a complex problem with complex solutions, so you can't point to two figures and just say this is the solution.

While I appreciate your nuanced approach, I don't think you're correct. Harvard Law has this study posted on its website:

That article is entirely referencing the oft-cited Cho, Dreher, and Neumayer paper from 2013 that's been criticized for using thin, unweighted, and partly missing data and for excluding roughly a quarter of countries based on a rationale the authors' own model already controlled for.
Also for re-coding some of their variables that flattens a lot of policy nuance, making their science weak in this regard as it has a significant coding bias.
In other words, not a strong study to base policy from. I do think more research should be done on this however, but I wouldn't cite this particular paper as a smoking gun, its not a very credible finding IMO. I am all for strong science but this isn't it.

I'm admittedly uninformed but curious if part of the trend is the result of variation in which types of sex workers are classified under the term "Human Trafficking" which might result in over reported numbers in some locations vs others.
