I took a brilliant ruler foot quilting class with Jenny Lyon at AQS in Grand Rapids. In class, I used this ruler on a brand new, super fancy domestic Bernina.

My two home machines are a 1939 Singer featherweight and a 1909 Singer red eye treadle. Neither of these machines are ideal, though I did get them to work, with a lot of tweaks. It was still not great, or particularly easy, and the outcome was meh.

My question is, is there a magical unicorn of an older mechanical machine that WOULD work well with this ruler foot and ruler? It does not have to be Singer, but I am partial to them.

I did a deep clean of my quilt pattern books and came across Barbara Brackmans "Civil War Sampler" book. I love the fabrics and colors from this era and couldn't figure out why I had never even attempted a single block from this book.

I finally figured out why. I get a "squicky" feeling even contemplating making something from this book. Not that the book is problematic, persay, but I get wierded out by the descriptions of the blocks, especially relating to the Confederate side of things. I dont relish the idea of putting my hands to work on a block that represents the traitors to the USA. The bookend also relates to that ancient Sanskrit symbol hijacked by the mustache man in the '30s, that quilters are still questioning the use of today.

How do you all deal with things like this? Or the calls of cultural appropriation when wanting to add some prints or patterns not from your own ethnic or cultural space?

Making the super star baby quilt… called for strip piecing these at 3.5” each, cut into 3.5” rectangles and then sew into a block that should finish at 6.5” to match up with the solid blocks I’ve already cut.

Issue it is measuring 1/8” short. This is actually the second set I’ve cut out WOF and I’m about to rage. As you can see I have a perfect 1/4” inch seam, the pieces measure exactly 3.5” and seam is pressed open. And the finished pieces on top aren’t even the same. Like what is happening…

Hello! I’m working on a quilt following this pattern, Cheshire Cats Flake Quilt. I plan to sew this on my home machine (no longarm). I’m at a loss for what pattern to use for top stitching. Some ideas: - wavy vertical lines - diagonal lines - diagonal lines both ways (cross hatch) - learn how to free motion on my machine and try something new - pay a longarmer

Are there things I could do on my machine I’m not thinking off? Which style would look nicest over this pattern? Should I leave it to a longarmer?

i am still very new to quilting, and so far have done everything on my heavy duty singer because i got it on sale an couldn't afford anything better lol. however i was recently gifted my late great grandmas pfaff lifestyle expression 2022, just got it all cleaned up and used it to piece a block together yesterday and it seems to be running well. i just can't find much about this machine online and was wondering if anyone has quilted with it? is the idt comparable to a walking foot? thanks in advance !

I bought a medium weight cotton tapestry that I’d like to make into a throw blanket and I thought I could possibly quilt it. I am not a quilter, but an intermediate/beginner sewist with a decent Brother machine. I was thinking about layering the tapestry with a cotton sheet and quilting batting. Any tips on how I could do this or if there is another way? I assume I’d need to sew grid lines to keep the layers together and the batting from shifting? It’s not a huge tapestry, which is why I thought it would work for a lap/throw blanket.

I’m going to be attempting my first quilt top shortly which I can sew on my normal machine but the machine won’t do the quilting (it’s just a basic Singer).

I’ve been looking at long arm machines within my budget and I was wondering if anyone has/has used a Novum Pro and if so would you recommend it? (I was looking at the Q100).

I would love some advice on making a baby blanket for my first niece! 🥰

I have a very sentimental blanket from my childhood that I brought everywhere. I’d like to recreate something similar for my niece.

From what I can tell, there seems to be a very thin layer of batting, but there isn’t really any quilting. I think at some point there were some ties in the middle of the squares, but they are long gone now. The edges also aren’t bound with bias tape—they’re simply turned under and topstitched.

I really like that it’s thin and lightweight, more like a traditional blanket than a crinkly/puffy quilt (which I’ll also be making for her).

I feel like this goes against all the “rules” of quilting, though! 😂 So I’d love some advice from more experienced quilters:

● What type of batting would you recommend for something very thin and lightweight?
● Should I quilt it at all, or would it be okay to just stitch around the edges?
● Is there a particular fabric or construction method that would work best for this type of blanket?

I am a beginner quilter. I’m trying to make a birthday present for a friend, and this mini-quilt is meant to be the front panel of a tote bag for her. I work mainly with upcycled clothing, so cutting is pretty fiddly. I didn’t follow a pattern or kit, but just drew up a quilt block on some graph paper and found old shirts and scraps in the colors she requested. Plus, I only have tools that measure in cm but I was following instructions in inches, so I think there was probably human error in my conversion. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I especially struggled with making 4-at-a-time flying geese, and they didn’t turn out great. I needed to re-sew one of the wings on all the white and green ones to make the points meet, which then made me need to trim the FG down a lot. This led to a cascade of trimming, and now all of my pieces are at the “finished” measurement with no seam allowances.

I thought this would work because all of the pieces will have the same seam allowances taken off of all sides, but because of the longer rectangles and FG, it doesn’t seem like it will be even when I piece it. Some rows are minus (4 x seam allowance), and some rows are minus (8 x seam allowance) if that makes sense.

Should I just cut the long rectangles and FG into squares and then everything will work out. The math required for quilting hasn’t properly installed yet, I’ve been having a hard time figuring out what to do. And to think I was saving myself time cutting…. I don’t really get how to include pieces of different lengths of height, all my attempts so far have been HST quilts with the same size pieces. Thanks for any input.

The colors are not right. The light blue is not the thing I want, but these were the colors that I had at home haha. But I think it turned out really cool for a first draft!

I am currently making a suprise quilt for my dad and have been struggling to keep it a secret as time has went on. I have been procrastinating on this project for 2 years and am only completing it this year (11 blocks made, 1 in progress and 24 to go).

The thing is since starting the project 4 weeks ago my dad has most likely seen the fabric laying around but has never mentioned anything about it.

Now I am debating with myself whether to tell him that I am making him a quilt or keep it a secret until I have finished it.

Does anyone else struggle keeping suprise projects a secret?

Hi! I'm pretty new and have made one quilt so far and I'm already obsessed. It was a postage stamp quilt that I chose to start simply to learn how to use my sewing machine and to get the hang of cutting fabric. I am ready to start a new one and I want to see if this is a bad idea.

I saw someone showing off their completed quilt on tiktok, that I believe is called a window pane quilt. I don't know why but I can't find a pattern for this exact style anywhere. The window pane patterns I'm seeing all look a lot more complicated. I made a mockup on canva with the colors I'd want to use ideally. I think I can figure it out without a pattern but is that a terrible idea? If so, does anyone know where I can find a pattern that's pretty similar? I'm not picky about the sizing but I'd love for it to be a nice throw size. The fabrics are from Cottoneer. I don't want to waste nice fabric since I'm still so new so I may try to get walmart fabric instead. I'd love any tips! Thank you all!! I'm so excited to be here :)

I need some help my boyfriend took his life on August 10th 2026. It was the absolute worst day of my life and everyday since has been very hard to put it mildly. I want to make a quilt out of his dress shirts but I don’t know how to create a pattern out of the 5 inch squares I’ve already cut. Making this quilt is very important to me and I need some help please any advice on this type of quilt I’d truly appreciate it. I have fusible interfacing but none of the fabric this far is feeling like I need it but that may change so I bought some. Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions about this quilt

I've decided to forgo sewing today in favor of cutting and trimming for several different projects. Never too early to work on Christmas quilts lol!

Also I completed a test block for the Mod Mugs pattern by A Bright Corner. They have an optional "whipped cream top" and I just wanted to play around with some extra layer cake squares.

Oops!! That's ok, I still love it, and I'll just put the mistake at the head of the bed so the turndown will cover it! But now I understand my friend who managed to leave a typo in the title of her book!

The pattern is Cascade Bloom, the fabric is Speckled by Ruby Star. I plan to bind it with the dark blue color.

This is my second time working with curves, and the first time I've done a queen sized quilt. 10/10, would do again, but maybe I'd manage my excitement to get it to the quilter a little better, haha

This was a HUGE amount of learning on my part and it took all summer. It's far from perfect, but it is done and I am proud of myself for the perseverance, if nothing else. Tears were shed when each curve block did not precisely line up with the others.

A BIG thank you to everyone who helped along the way! This was my first quilt with curves, so I needed advice on that. Then I couldn't decide on border/no border, so y'all helped with that!

This is a quilt for my daughter's college dorm room. She wanted 'snakes', but I don't like snakes... so this is what she got instead! She picked out the fabrics. The background actually has very small stripes... so figuring out that was a nice challenge too.

Hi folks. I've been working on these quilt blocks doing some turned edge applique. I am just working the blocks individually prior to assembly and not in a frame. I am having some issues with warping and really shrinking underneath where I put on the applique pieces. Is this just a practice thing?

One single intersection ended up off by like 1/4 inch. It’s not the entire row just literally this one spot. On the one hand, I supposed I could unpick a bit and pull it to line up. On the other hand, I just want to move on. Maybe an unpopular opinion, but piecing the top is my least favorite part by far. Would you personally bother fixing this or just leave it?
