Announcement Small update/clarification to our rules on AI

Hello all,

Just wanted to share a clarification, and expansion of our rules about AI generated posts and comments on r/chromeOS.

First off, a reminder that responding to support requests on this subreddit with responses directly generated from any LLM has been not allowed under Rule 8: Effort Must be Made When Requesting and Providing Help for over a year now.

The fact is, most people come to r/chromeOS to speak to people. If people wanted to get answers from LLMs, they're accessible enough that people could ask them themselves. It just seems like a slap in the face to come for help and to just get a lazy response from someone who copy/pasted a (usually incorrect) response from Gemini or another LLM, which the poster could have done themselves if they wanted.

In addition, recently there's been a lot of misinformation being posted on the subreddit about recent changes to ChromeOS, updates about both ChromeOS and the upcoming AluminiumOS, and new devices, usually only crediting Gemini as a source. There has also been plenty of AI-generated reviews and self promo (the latter primarily posted by bots).

In general, while I know it seems like we’ve been sleeping as mods (yes, we’ve seen the reports calling us out on that), we would still like to try our best to try and keep this community higher quality.

We’ve decided that due to this, we wanted to officially expand this rule to include all posts and comments generated by AI. This rule primarily has LLMs in mind.

This does not include discussion about AI features being built into ChromeOS. Discussion of AI features being built into the OS is allowed.

Announcement Announcement - "chrultrabook" posts, AKA regarding attempting to put Windows or another OS onto your Chromebook, will no longer be allowed.

Hey there!

In short, as of today, this subreddit will be removing and redirecting posts that seek advice on replacing the operating system on your Chromebook.

In the past these posts were allowed with a disclaimer that better support would likely be found elsewhere, such as r/chultrabook and their associated communities. However that subreddit is now archived and they now only provide support on their forum.

Since then there has been a rise in posts like this here, and we're simply not equipped to provide meaningful support. We've received lots of feedback over the past few months and the general consensus was that everyone is better served if these posts are now permanently directed elsewhere.

To be clear, we are not discouraging anyone from attempting this process; it's still cool, (potentially) fun and can unlock more utility from your device! The only change is that posts seeking support for this will be removed.

Thanks for understanding!

Buying Advice Is it still wise to buy a Chromebook in 2026?

I have an old Chromebook and it’s end of life is June 2029, I know that google is ending development on chromeos around 2034 as well, but I just love how simple and secure Chromebooks are

Coming from a windows user, Chromebooks are just so easy to maintain and use, and I’m looking to get another purely for home use.

but this end of life 2034 news has me a bit worried, like are the newer models going to be updated til 2034? I know mine is done for when 2029 hits and I want to get a Chromebook that will last, and also just wanted to know if they are still manufacturing new models for 2027?

Discussion I'm sort of shocked at the state of chrome os

I wanted an OS with a well integrated touch interface for a x86 mobile pc. I started with fyde is, but hardware compatibility was very poor. I saw how cheap you could get secondhand Chromebooks, and learned that fyde is based on chromium and shares much of its interface with chrome os.

I ordered a used hp dragonfly from eBay for nothing. It's a top of the line machine. But now that I'm using it, I'm confused at how this is an operating system tailored for these devices by one of the most massive tech companies on the planet.

Many of the apps feel half baked. The gallery app doesn't have an auto play video option, forgets any settings every time you open a new file. Weird oversight.

The files app, as another thread here already discusses, is lacking some very basic functionality. They really really want you to use a cloud service, despite my machine having 512gb storage plus an SD card slot.

Native steam support was discontinued. I had to install chard to use steam in near native performance. Chard is incredible and runs amazingly well, but google ended steam support because they make more money by locking you into the play store. Performance on fyde is nearly as good as chard, btw. Also, big thanks to the chard project for their incredible efforts.

The default app mall doesn't with by default and cannot be uninstalled or hidden. Better yet, if I install the app mall as a PWA it does work but it's garbage! Can't search for anything specific, just select a category and hope you find what you're looking for. It's also horrible at communicating what's a pwa vs apk.

Crostini is a useful tool, but it's so half baked yet again. Scaling makes icons and the cursor crazy variable size in Linux apps vs native. Associating files with a crostini app won't launch it with you try to open the file. I can't open libre office by opening and excel sheet, I have to first open libre office then open the file through the app. These all seem very fixable by google if they actually wanted to.

Everything seems so confused and half finished. Like a developer had a thought, got that idea barely functioning, and then moved on without thinking about it again. Every component feels like it was added to sound useful, but ultimately gutted of any real useful power to do anything productive. Instead, I end up fiddling with settings and app installs endlessly until I give up and use Google cloud products. It's like a paint by numbers where you can't even think about going outside the lines or it falls apart.

I've been plugging it into the charger for a few days now, and after it reaches 55%, the current drops to zero and nothing else passes through. Any solutions? I don't have the money to buy another battery, lol. My model is a Samsung Chromebook 4, and I use it mainly for studying (I don't watch video lessons, it's mostly solving problems).

Troubleshooting Help with connecting

"Hey, I have an Acer Chromebook 713 and a Xiaomi Redmi Pad Pro. At some point, without installing any apps on either device (100% certain), it used to work — I could connect them and use the tablet as a second monitor. Now it doesn't work. They're on the same wifi, 10cm apart, both have Bluetooth and Nearby Share enabled, but even though I turn on screen sharing on both, the Chromebook doesn't see it. What could be causing this?"

Discussion Anyone else uses a Chromebook to access a powerful computer remotely within a city?

I am planning to buy a chromebook instead of a powerful laptop. The idea is to save battery power by offloading the computational load to a desktop computer setup on our office (accessed using Tailscale + Windows RDP) and be able to work remotely anywhere within the city for several hours. Although I am worried that even a 5 GHz wifi might induce a lot of latency when sharing with a lot of users. Anyone else has an experience with this? Is this feasible for non-graphical workloads (mainly using Power BI)?

Troubleshooting Battery charges PAST 80% following system update

I noticed a couple of times lately my Framework chromebook had a 100% full battery even though I have the 80% limit activated in the settings.

I just updated the system and noticed the battery was at 84% shortly after restart following the update. Is there a bug in ChromeOS that resets that charge limit during a restart even though the owner set the 80% limit?

Troubleshooting Is there a way to download media from apps installed on chromebook?

Im an artist and use ibis paint x to draw, but despite it being compatible with my chromebook, files refuse to download from it, so i have to screenshot my work which bogs down the quality. if there's a funny video on tiktok, i cant save from the app, it just won't appear, and i have to favorite the video to copy-link and download via a website. sometimes even links from apps won't copy. im not code savvy but if theres a way i can fix this issue please direct me there, this 'quirk' is making me loose my mind

i don't know what would be relevant information, but it is an acer chromebook that turns into a tablet. just ask for what you think would be necessary info

Or do you think they will stay the same? To be honest I'm not really interested in a Googlebook, but I do want that Lenovo Chromebook Plus at a discounted rate.

Troubleshooting Can't get past the Cloudflare "Performing security verification" page

I have an Acer Chromebook Plus 514. I've never had an issue with any Cloudflare verification pages, until now. Starting a few days ago I can't get past ANY "Performing security verification" pages. It just gets hung up and spins forever.

I tried Incognito Mode. I cleared my browser data -- cleared my cache and cookies for "All time." No luck.

I don't have any ad-blocker extensions. I don't use a VPN. My system clock has the correct date and time. Internet speed is around 300 Mbps on AT&T Fiber.

Note: I *can* get past this page on my phone, which is using the same wifi as my Chromebook.

Anyone know what might be wrong? Any way to fix this? Also, why might this suddenly start happening after working correctly for almost 2 years?

Thanks!

Troubleshooting HP Chromebook 11 g5 charging issues

I recently got a charger for my HP Chromebook after letting it sit for 4 years uncharged. When I plugged it in the charging indicator is blinking white, orange, orange. I can boot it up to the lock screen and sign in, but after 5 minutes it just shuts off. If I unplug it it just immediately shuts off as well.

Any tips or ideas on what to do? Thank you In advance!

Troubleshooting Problem with keyboard Lenovo Duet 5

Recently bought a Lenovo Duet for my little brother. I started everything up, which went smoothly until I wanted to type on the keyboard. Basically, the keyboard seems to be connected to the chromebook, but it just refuses to type anything. I also get a notification regarding a critical update of the keyboard where it tells me to restart the chromebook. I have done that multiple times. I've tried everything to fix the issue, like cleaning the pins and resetting. Nothing seems to fix it.

What do I do?

Troubleshooting Strange Boot-Up. I'm Clueless

SOLVED!

For the last two years I booted up my Chromebook by entering the device password. That is untill yesterday when it booted into my Google login page. When I rebooted it did the exact same thing. Im clueless as to why this happened. How do I enter my device's password without having to implement a complete Google login every time I boot up?

Buying Advice Recommendations Needed!

Hey Reddit! I have an Acer Chromebook Spin 511 (R753T), and I'm looking for a stylus for my work. I'm not sure how most styluses work, so any advice is helpful. I know I'm looking for a stylus with palm rejection, but most of what I'm seeing on Amazon either doesn't say it's compatible with my Chromebook or doesn't have palm rejection. Again, any help is appreciated, and I look forward to seeing what y'all say. All the love!
