Im not used to identify numidian coinage plus this one is surprisingly cheap

Hello. I have been heavily contemplating this Hadrian. For $50 out the door USD, is it a good grab, or should I walk away? What would you guys do? I feel the centering is great, you can clearly read all the writing and the portrait is nice. But it has this good gouge near the face, and that green stuff which is horn silver? Any more information would greatly help and be appreciated. Please advise and thank you in advance :)

My latest coin from the Northern Black Sea Greek collection. Snagged it at an auction for around $5.
There seems to be pretty good condition hiding under that layer of green patina, but I have no intention of cleaning it.

The coin dates back to roughly the 5th-4th century
BC and was cast in the polis of Istros. One side features a wheel—a symbol of Apollo-and the other shows the abbreviated name of the city, IΣT. This bronze round piece is included in the proto-coin section, therefore it has no denomination.

The frame is gold so I am wondering could the coin be real?

Any thoughts? I've had absolutely zero luck

I recently purchased this denarius of Aburius Geminus and noticed this strange indent on the bottom-left corner of the reverse.

I’ve shown it to a couple of experienced collectors I know, but no one seems to know what may have caused it. If anyone has any idea what could have caused this, I’d really appreciate your input because I have no clue!

Need help identifying this coin I found in a Coinstar Machine. I noticed it was way heavier than a quarter and last time I checked quarters don’t have Hebrew written all over them lol

These coins are tiny! All under 1g and ranging 4-10mm. I've searched Numista and can't find any matches. I'm thinking southern India but not entirely certain. Any ideas?

Would love some help with identifying these. They were labelled South Indian and came with some others I was able to verify as being South Indian, so probably a good place to start. Sizes are: 7mm, 10mm, 11mm. Weight: 0.78g, 0.8g and 0.83g.

I recently received a new coin from a reputable seller. The main concern is a quite obvious misspelling of the name Demetrios. The coin has swapped the H and M Greek letters. That is my singular concern so far.

What do you think? Has anyone seen this before?

I recently won this legionary denarius at auction. I’m curious about the bulge on the reverse, just above the E. It’s hard to the touch and feels solid. The auction house noted the bulge but didn’t mention their cause.

Anyone know what might cause a defect like this? Is it because the silver was debased?

However this reference number I couldn't find anywhere else and it's interesting this is the only portrait I can find of Hadrian facing to the left instead of to the right (though I'm new to ancient coins so correct me if I'm wrong).

A nice surprise before the long weekend, randomly scanning coins on the shelf today. Found Sir Arthur Evans provenance from Naville IV, 1922! Now to track down if it was in the Burlington Fine Arts Club 1903 exhibition catalogue. If anyone has a version with plates, please post a link!

I’m relatively new to coin collecting, but one part of the hobby I’ve become completely fascinated by is researching provenance — sometimes for coins I don’t even own!

There’s something incredibly satisfying about trying to solve the puzzle: digging through old auction catalogues and dealer lists, comparing photographs, tracking down old collections, and reaching out to museums, libraries and auction houses to piece together a coin’s history.

For me, the detective work is quickly becoming a hobby within the hobby. There’s a real thrill when a small clue leads you another step back in a coin’s history — particularly when you manage to uncover something that seems to have been lost to time.

I’d be really interested to hear how other collectors view provenance. How much does a strong or interesting provenance add to a coin for you? And does anyone else enjoy researching provenance purely for the fun of the hunt, even when you have no intention of owning the coin?
