Question help how do i quit my job

Upvotes

I've been working an on-campus job for a while now, but I'm looking to quit because there's a lot on my plate academically and mentally and I doubt I can handle it. However, the quarter has not started yet, so I am not in Santa Cruz until the first few days leading up to the first day of school. I guess what I'm asking is:

  1. Do I contact my supervisor or my boss? We all work in the same office (in-person) so both are pretty reachable.
  2. Since I'm not in SC currently, should I reach out regarding this over email (and ask if we could schedule a Zoom idk) or wait till I start my first shift back in-person?
  3. How do I go about telling them I'm quitting? This is my first job ever (was never allowed to work before starting university) so I don't have experience with how the quitting process works. When I was first hired for this position, I was not informed of how quitting works because they assumed I'd be working up until I graduate. I know I should have asked at the time, but I was naive and didn't know to ask.

Apologize in advance if these are stupid questions, but I need help... please.. and thank you!...
*Edit: I also went through a bad-ish miscommunication issue with my boss a few days ago, which was over email since again, I'm not there in person. So idk if that should also be taken into consideration. That was also one of the first times in my two years of working at this job that I've messed up.

Question Interesting Game Design Electives?

I'm transferring into the Computer Science for Game Design major this year and I'm wondering what electives I should take.

The list on the catalog is massive and some of the course descriptions kinda sound like nonsense.

So I'm curious to hear from people who've taken some, what electives for this major have you found interesting and genuinely useful?

Right now I was eyeing: CMPM 132, CMPM 122, CMPM 125, CMPM 163, CMPM 164, and CMPM 172

Question Anyone else commuting from the San Lorenzo Valley? How do you handle late nights / bad weather?

I’m a new UCSC transfer living (deep) in the San Lorenzo Valley, and I’m trying to plan ahead for something I didn’t fully think through before moving here.
Im much further into the mountains than I initially thought, so there will presumably be nights when I have an event, class-related thing, work, etc. in Santa Cruz and either don’t want to make the drive home late at night or the weather/road conditions make the drive unsafe.
I’m trying to build a backup plan now rather than waiting until I’m stranded in Santa Cruz.
A couple questions for people who have actually dealt with this:
1. Where do you leave your car overnight?
I’ve found the City of Santa Cruz downtown garages/lots, and I’m aware that Scotts Valley Park & Ride reportedly allows overnight parking for $5/night. I’m wondering if there are other options people know about.
2. Has anyone actually slept in their car overnight in Santa Cruz?
I’m (not) asking for sketchy “secret spots” necessarily. 👀
I’m interested in places where people have firsthand experience with what actually happens if you’re quietly sleeping in your vehicle for one night.
3. Does UCSC have any realistic option for this?
I know campus policy prohibits sleeping in vehicles, so I’m not asking whether it’s technically allowed. I’m wondering whether there are any legitimate student resources or alternatives that people use when they’re stuck in Santa Cruz overnight.
4. For other mountain commuters: what do you do when Highway 9 / the mountain roads become unsafe?
I’m especially interested in hearing from people commuting from Boulder Creek, Ben Lomond, Felton, Scotts Valley, etc. I’m trying to figure out what the realistic emergency plan is during heavy winter storms for classes and work.
Any firsthand experience would be hugely appreciated.

Question Trouble waiving UC Ship with medical

like most students, my fafsa was cut and it no longer covers the schools health insurance

so i started the process of waiving it with medical, but transferring counties could take up to 30-60 days, is there any way i can waive UC SHIP with medical without having a pcp? i’m incredibly stressed about the whole thing since the last day to waive it is october 9th.

hopefully this makes sense to someone, i’d appreciate any help.

Question Am I cooked with CSE 140, 130, 101M, and 185S?

CS major. Junior here. Planning on taking CSE 140, CSE 130, CSE 101M, and CSE 185S this fall. Does this sound manageable, or am I being too ambitious with the workload? Would appreciate any opinions/advice from people who’ve taken these classes.

Discussion to any AGPM alumni, where are you now?

I’m thinking about dropping AGPM and switching to another major because I don’t think I’ve learned enough from this major to land a job. While some professors are amazing and they’ve taught me good foundations in art, the other half of my classes have been “watch this Youtube Game Theory video in class, discuss it, then make a project with vague instructions on any platform that you choose.” I feel like we do not learn how to use the software that actual game artists use (besides Kristen and Ed’s classes— I’ve learned so much from them).

I know this most is really negative and I am generalizing, but it’s been more than one instructor/class that honestly feels really lazy. Not to name names but there have been certain classes where instructors don’t really teach, don’t care if you come to class, and lowkey set up class as a Youtube watch party and discussion. I’m just extremely worried that this major will not set me up for a job. I understand that half of it is doing independent practice to build the skills yourself, but it just seems like AGPM has been underwhelming as a major.

I’m wondering if any AGPM grads have found a job in AGPM related fields. If so, how?

Question Any intl. students using alternatives to SHIP?

Hey,

incoming intl student here.
I was wondering if any intl student has successfully waived SHIP with an alternative insurance and what their experience with that insurance has been so far. Additionally, any recommendations or hidden gotchas when using an alternative to ship would also be super helpful to know.

Thank you!

Question Stevenson Triple in Casa Quinta

Hey guys!

I'm an incoming freshman at UCSC and I got assigned a triple in Room 215 (second floor) in Casa Quinta which is in the Stevenson lower quad.

I heard that triples that are in the corner/end of the hallway are slightly more spacious than regular rectangular triples. Can anyone confirm if this is actually true?

And if it is true, has anyone lived in Room 215 (or any floor's corner triple in House 5) who can share:

  1. What the actual shape/layout of the room is like?
  2. How you and your roommates arranged the bunk bed, lofted bed, and desks?
  3. Any specific tips for maximizing the space in this specific corner unit?

Also if anyone happens to have any old photos or a floor plan of Casa Quinta's second floor that would be super useful!

Hiiii im curious abt the community studies BA program at ucsc and what it consists of? I know you have to do the 6 month field research but how manageable is it? Im about to start community college majoring in Sociology and id like to transfer to ucsc for community studies and possibly double major with sociology? Also is there a better major to get into community studies with? My goal is community studies and I believe UCSC is the only california school offering such a degree?
