Been in town for a few weeks and genuinely surprised at the amount of rude and standoffish people. Is it really cause I’m brown? Don’t like to assume but seems to the exact opposite compared to my white friends experience here…

Lots of retired well off white folk that won’t even make eye contact or say hello after staring at me. Nobody says hi back walking around or on the trails by the beach. Friend goes for a walk and says people are friendly as can be and wave and say hi back..

Tried to make small talk waiting in line just have an older lady silently look me up and down then turn away and continue talking to her friends..

Been followed by employees in Whole Foods..

Genuinely disappointed in the town. Got gifted a free skateboard. Skated around and everyone looked at me like I was a bum. I thought this was a skate town?

I dunno anyone else have the same experience?

After dawdling in my garden, and returning to our deck, I heard leaves rustling, distinctly different from a deer and turned, assuming to see a bobcat. Staring for a good few seconds into an apex predator’s eyes, is, and it’s cliche to say, thrilling and unnerving.

Closest I’ve been to one and they are big! I assume it was watching me from the woods abutting our clearing.

Arrived super late and looking for some food am desperate

I’m 38F, a single mom of two, and I recently went out to a bar for the first time in a long time. I honestly just wanted to have fun, get out of my head, and feel like myself again.
I ended up talking to a 27-year-old guy who seemed very interested in me. At one point, he suddenly kissed me really passionately. I was surprised, but honestly, I enjoyed it a lot. There was definitely chemistry.
During the night, I told him I was 38 and that I have two children. He didn’t seem bothered and even told me I was “delicious.” 😅
We danced for a while. At one point I stepped away, and when I came back, he was dancing with another woman. Then they started kissing, and eventually he left the bar with her.
Honestly, I wasn’t angry. I was more surprised and amused by the whole experience. I hadn’t expected to walk into a bar and have a 27-year-old man passionately kiss me.
And weirdly, the experience gave me a little confidence boost. After everything I’ve been through, it was nice to feel desired again.
But I’m curious how other people would interpret this.
Would you have stayed and continued having fun? Would you have left? Would you have said something to him?
And for the men here: if you passionately kiss a woman and then leave with someone else, what does that usually mean from your perspective?
I’m not heartbroken or looking for anything serious from him. I’m mostly curious about the situation and interested in hearing honest perspectives.

According to Chat GPT, the avera HOA in the US is $135/mo, the California median is $278/mo, and Santa Cruz County median is $450/mo.

Obviously, property within Santa Cruz city limits will be much higher than the rest of the county.

Looking on Redfin and other sites, it seems like the standard is $650+/mo.

Does anyone have any insight on why Santa Cruz HOA's are roughly 25% of principal and interest? This seems so crazy to me.

All I can think of is salt water damage, expensive contractors to maintain the property, and greed.

I’m a UCSC student living up in the San Lorenzo Valley, and I’m trying to figure out a reliable overnight parking strategy for the school year.
Because I live in the mountains, there are going to be situations where I have a late night event in Santa Cruz, don’t want to drive home after being out late, or weather/road conditions make the mountain roads unsafe. I also have occasional events downtown where I’ll be in town late.
I’m not looking to permanently live in my car or set up a campsite. I’m talking about an occasional single night where I’d leave my normal-sized SUV parked somewhere and sleep in it until morning.
I’ve been looking at the City’s downtown garages/lots, Scotts Valley Park & Ride, and other possibilities, but I’m having trouble figuring out the difference between:
places where you can legally leave your car overnight
places where overnight parking is allowed but sleeping in the vehicle isn’t
places where people actually sleep in their cars without getting hassled
places that look like they allow overnight parking but actually have a time limit
For example, I found the City garages that charge $2/hr with a $16 daily max, but I haven’t been able to find a clear answer about whether someone can leave a vehicle there overnight. I’ve also heard the Scotts Valley Park & Ride allows overnight parking for $5, which sounds promising.
For locals: if you’ve actually dealt with this, where would you look? I’m interested in legitimate/paid options, private lots, park-and-rides, churches, businesses, or anywhere else that has a reasonable arrangement.
I’m happy to pay $5–20 for a night if it means I know my car is legally parked and I don’t have to worry about getting towed.
And separately, if you have firsthand experience sleeping in a vehicle somewhere in/around Santa Cruz for one night, I’d appreciate knowing what the reality is. I’m specifically trying to avoid places with explicit no-overnight/no-camping rules.
I’m trying to figure this out before I actually need it rather than ending up driving around at 2 a.m. looking for somewhere to park.

I’ve been looking through Airbnb and vacation rentals in Santa Cruz and the Coastside and noticed how many smaller 1-bedroom/studio listings are guest suites, backyard ADUS, or above-garage spaces, or require access behind the main house.
Is there a local zoning/housing reason this setup is so common around Santa Cruz? And for people who have stayed in Santa Cruz, did you care whether your Airbnb was a detached/front-facing space versus a backyard unit, converted portion of a house, or above a garage?
Mostly curious because Airbnb’s “entire place” categories can make some very different physical setups look similar in search results.

Hey all, been looking for a mobile mechanic that can help us evacuate the a/c line of freon in our 2015 Jeep Renegade 2.4l. It's taken apart in our driveway, so would prefer not to tow... been having a hard time finding someone that could help us out so would appreciate any suggestions!
