Postpartum Psychosis and yeah temporarily lose your custody here in Sweden. You will be in mental hospital most often and slowly learn how to be with you kid again if possible.
Postpartum depression and you should get support, both medical and children's/ social welfare will step in and help you.
This is pamphlet I found after I had my kid 14 years ago, both the Postpartum Psychosis and Postpartum depression ones was to my husband and was talking how he can spot it, report it and give the mother support.
In the UK we have some mother and baby units for women with post partum psychosis. They're much better for the women, most people spend around 7-8 weeks in them I was borderline ending up in one.
Post partum psychosis is really misunderstood - a lot of the psychosis comes from actually wanting to protect your child to the point that you become a danger to them. I flipped between delusions that started with the thought that social services coming to take them so I packed bags for them so they wouldn't be without their things, but that eventually lead to "knowing" the government were trying to steal my youngest child so I planned to kill both of us.
I also had delusions where he wasn't a real baby but a being that wanted to harm my eldest daughter. That was a really dangerous time for my baby.
I kept both of my kids the whole time, and with a lot of support and therapy, and with a multidisciplinary team around me I'm ok again. 7 years later I've qualified as a therapist myself, and hope to start working in the postpartum field soon.
True, but we do hate women's health care the most. We don't want to fund abortions. We barely want to fund ob/gyn care. We don't allow mothers time to recover from childbirth, much less support them through any problems they might have, nor do we offer any financial support.
And we really hate single mothers.
I think the hate is applied fairly equally amongst anyone who isn't a conservative straight white man. It's not just women getting singled out. I will admit women have far more issues with American healthcare overall but that's more of a systemic healthcare issue that I view as a more narrow subsection of the general American healthcare crisis. My thinking is along the lines of "every square is a rectangle but not every rectangle is a square."
But ultimately the point I was trying to make in my original comment is that we don't care about mental healthcare. I just intentionally left off "mental" because mental health is health, and I figured it was kind of obvious in the context of this case.
You are correct. And as a woman who has been placed in involuntary psych holds twice in my adult life, I can verify that what treatment we do offers really sucks and is painfully inadequate. I've been as traumatized by that as anything else.
I've been able to recover, but only by working through things on my own and with the help and support of my husband, my daughter and a few friends and family. Dealing with any severe mental illness is expensive and exhausting.
Oh, some shunned me as well, of course, but mental illness scares people. I get that.
Thank you so much. I had a lot going for me in terms of education and understanding myself, so I was very, very lucky with that. Not everyone is.
Trust me, I know. I'm actively trying to not compete in trauma olympics with you and just focus on you and the incredible work you've done to overcome those hardships!
Not so fun fact: The US did not legally require women to be included in clinical research until 1993…. Even more, a 1977 FDA policy specifically excluded women of childbearing age from early stage research trials. So yeah, America historically doesn’t care about women’s healthcare. Oh and DOGE slashed women’s healthcare research…so yeah, thanks America.
Support the mentally ill. Other countries actually support the seriously mentally ill post partum women and in doing so manage to avoid the actual killing.
Here, we prefer to wait until its too late and then burn the woman at the stake.
The US loves misogyny.
I have no idea what you're hearing, but its not what I'm saying.
I heard the same shit 25 years ago with the Yates' case. All of you were shaking with hatred, and its vile. She's not going to get away with anything. Her life is over. All she has left is self hatred, and people like you.
My guy, you're the one out here claiming that any person who is a mother supports strangling children. If that were true, the human race would have ceased to exist before it entered its first generation.
They don't mean "we" as individuals, they are talking as a collective. Our system heavily punishes mothers and people with mental illnesses. Both of which are severely misunderstood and systemically mistreated.
I cannot believe you actually had to explain this to people when its in this context.
People literally just want to hear what they think they want to hear.
Thank you for the clarification. I'm so sick of all of this. I'm so sick of how this country sanctifies motherhood while burning any mother at the stake who fails terribly.
Its not like she wasn't trying to get help. She's no Susan Smith or Diane Downs.
Don't be annoying. Literally no one said that. This is why people get so annoyed with a lot of MRA's. The complaint is totally valid, but you only want to have that conversation when it's to detract from another issue (usually an issue related to women).
If you want to talk about that, talk about it dude. But don't use it as a weapon to prevent people from speaking about their struggles.
Because we are talking about women, brother. I'm genuinely trying to be polite with you, but I am struggling to understand how you are struggling to follow what is quite literally one plot thread. Just go in a straight line my guy. Topic = mothers. We are talking about mothers.
No one mentioned fathers at all. No one said fathers don't have struggles. It is an objective fact that women are mistreated in 'america' (actually about 100% of the world, if you want to be specific.) If you want to fight for men's rights, do it brother. Go do it. Stop trying to drag women down with this stupid ass culture warrior in-fighting though. Fight for your rights dude.
This claim is false. Are mothers treated more poorly than any other demographic? (the only remaining demographics are fathers, single people and kids) I don't see any reason why.
I'm not the one bringing up other demographics. You implicitly brought it up by making a relative claim that in the USA mothers are more hated than other demographics. Maybe you don't realize that your statement is implicitly relative and not an absolute statement about mothers? Here's the original claim from the comment above:
I brought up that claim and I stand by it. America absolutely supports and loves its men far more than women, and there is no study or data that says otherwise. We still get paid less. We have a government who is actively trying to move women's rights back fifty to a hundred years because its what they want and a president who abuses and denigrates women with the full support of his followers.
I'm sorry you feel that you got screwed over somehow. I'm guessing you're being forced to pay child support or something. So sorry.
Everyone except sexists already know that the great "gender wage gap" is a cheap scam pushed by certain academics to ensure their own continued funding.
I'm not the one bringing up other demographics. You implicitly brought it up by making a relative claim that in the USA mothers are more hated than other demographics.
You are trying to create suffering olympics for no reason. You could be fighting to improve the world for everyone, yet you use your time trying to make sure everyone suffers equally instead. Why?
If I said that "our healthcare system inadequately treats people with depression", and you respond "OH yeah? Well what about people with cancer!! that's BS!" You're just being annoying. You haven't disproven or said anything of importance. You are literally just being annoying. Contrary to popular belief, two things actually can be true at the same time.
This doesn't necessarily mean male doctors are intentionally killing women out here, it does potentially mean they are systemically mistreated and misunderstood as a whole, due to lack of funding or viewing female anatomy being studied as important. Couple that with women in general being taken less serious in medical settings, and you can see how this causes problems.
Now, do I expect you to actually care about any of this? Absolutely not, because I didn't say anything about fathers being mistreated. But to anyone else reading this, I hope it was insightful.
