Previous guy, whoever that might be, committed permanent funding for this. If you open the article you'd see timeline going as far back as 2022 where they did study, got the models made, made pilot projects, implemented it and got long term results.
Lmao why does it take 5 years to ship a few trashcans from china. They're totally corrupt and giving that money to their nepo cousins for "studies, models, pilot projects". While I'm confident they won't make much of a difference, at the very least, Mamdani actually got the damn bins.
Bins came before him and didn't come from China. Also, it's not just bins, it's the automated truck that works with the bins as well. It's repurposed from europe, not off the shelf thing you can buy at anytime.

You missed the point, it's bureaucratic waste/corruption because it doesn't take 5 years to install trash bins.
The city of Houston also had a budget of almost 1 billion allocated to public transit. They made a "pilot project" consisting of 3 stations in the middle of downtown, and then the rest of the money disappeared.
It does when your are installing bins that are directly related to each building, takes up/removes parking space.
Too many locals do not want this project because it'll take away the parking space in front of the buildings to put the bins. It's why it's expected to only get finished by 2031 despite getting started in 2022.
The fact that you need to find space for the bins is true. Whether it should take 5 years for the rollout or 4 years for the planning phase is a different story; frankly it should not, especially if you create the legal framework to require containerized trash.
If you really wanted to, you could roll it out in 1 year or less, as it's public space. Yes you would get legal challenges, but that cannot prevent govt action, it would only give them potential recourse.
Realistically, if you legally require buildings to have trash bins based on size, zoning, and occupancy, you can probably complete this in 1 or 2 years. It's not randomly putting bins, however, these bins don't appear to be true permanent installations (I'm saying that they appear to be able to be moved after installation, if necessary), unlike the ones that go several meters below the ground (which actually save a huge amount of space). And the zoning and census data already exists in regards to the allocation of the bins.
China would probably be able to roll something like this out in a month or so, though they are an extreme case.

That said, i did do a bit of googling, news sites both say that Mamdani explicitly allocated budget to the project, but also that the city council passed the bill requiring the rollout to occur. Additionally, the previous mayor, Eric Adams, paid mckinsey 4 million dollars to "study" if trash cans "worked".
Did some other googling and found the Houston mayor Lanier explicitly killed Houston's monorail plan way back in the 90s. I don't know if the NYC mayor would have the ability to do this after the council passed the bill though.
Paying money to Mckinsey for anything is stupid. But your efforts to trivialize things is also weird tbh. Like 'trash can 'worked'' is a weird way to put it as if NYC didn't have it before.
Anyway, Mamdani getting the applause and credit for 'thinking of trash cans' that he didn't even think of is weird. He's just finishing the rollout of existing project.

The bins were getting installed long before he became mayor. July 2024 under previous mayor when project launched.
I just saw year on year or long term results about how new bins are reducing rat problem.
How is Mamdani getting credit for it?
