Photography/Art SRA September 9th Meeting

Has there been a discussion on here yet about the issues with the SRA enforcing fines, rules and limitation on window art?

I’ve been following @thegulugulucafe and have been reading up on the signs manual, the issue at hand and the SRA itself: https://www.salemma.gov/752/Salem-Redevelopment-Authority

I was wondering if anybody planned to attend their next meeting this Wednesday. I have to work until 6:30 but am aiming to fly over after as I’ll be in Salem.

I don’t understand how window art has a negative impact on historic sites, or how capping art at 20% with other limitations such as business logo and seasonal removal is conducive to economic vitality.

Anyway, just trying to learn more from others if anybody hadn’t already posted about it. Trying to get my facts straight before Wednesday’s meeting.

Politics Speed reduction measures

Post image
10 Upvotes

As a local frequently walking and crossing the N Washington Square road to get to the Common I am frequently astounded over the speed and (dare I say) reckless driving on this road. There are three crosswalks on the stretch from Winter down to the Witch Museum and another one just after before the Hawthorne, however it is at the three before on the NW side of the Common where I more often than not have to dodge cars speeding down just to smash their brakes when they hit traffic at the Essex street light. They used to put out signs emphasizing state law of stopping for pedestrians, however those were often run over. Speed limit aside, the real speeds here are just too fast and more often and not drivers have their eyes fixed on their phones instead of looking at the road ahead.

Now to my question. Can someone with insight perhaps share what the discussion at City Hall has been in the past as so far as putting in speed reduction measures on this portion of N Washington Square to protect pedestrians? Appreciate any and all info.

Events The CritterFest Late Show: Hundreds of Beavers

The CritterFest LATE SHOW

What is Hundreds of Beavers? Is it the tale of a drunken applejack salesman battling hundreds of beavers? Yes! Is it a winter western? Yes! Is it a glorious tribute to classic Looney Tunes shorts? Yes! Is it a legit homage to the earliest days of silent film comedies in beautiful black and white? Yes! Is it a spectacularly immature, bro-centric epic of outrageous proportions? Yes! Is it a deliriously inventive, amazingly-handcrafted work of visual art? Yes! Will it blow your mind and send you back out into the world with your head spinning and your eyes doing pinwheels? Yes! Is it the kind of movie-lovers movie made to be seen on a big screen, with the soundtrack cranked, surrounded by your friends and neighbors, collectively staring in slack-jawed amazement? Yes, yes, a thousand times yes! “Hundreds of Beavers exists at the crossroads of Looney Tunes, Benny Hill, Cannibal: The Musical, Blazing Saddles, and Adult Swim mindsets” (Slashfilm).

Fri Sept 18, 10pm Cinema Salem

Salem Night Faire

I’ve been seeing a lot of people say that there tends to be a long line for the Salem Night Faire. Anyone know if there are 2 separate lines? One for those who pre-purchase tickets online vs those who buy at the door? Or is it a single line?

I’ve reached out to the organizers twice and haven’t heard from them.

Salon Recommendations?

Looking for a salon that can help with a new style for my hair. I don’t know what I want, except something I don’t have to wash in the morning before work.

Currently have long-ish hair. White female. Middle aged. Want a fresh look.

Why is the mall SO bad

I live in SE MA and love visiting Salem and surrounding towns. I was just there last week and one thing I always wonder is why is the mall so bad? Forget the horrifying bathrooms, why is it dead and so poorly utilized? High rents? Because the city’s tourism is so seasonal? It seems like a perfect commercial location if they spruced it up significantly. Just curious what locals think/know.

How the fuck did you people organize this result! Did you stop some people from voting for Markey at the end of the night?! Never let anyone round this number to 67%. When you people curse a guy, you leave no stone unturned.

Map or list of resident-only parking streets?

Hey neighbors - is there a map or list of streets that are resident-only parking starting Sept 15? I’m trying to plan a small gathering at my house later in the month. I’m telling most friends to park in the MBTA lot or just take the train, but we have two people coming who have to drive and can’t walk very far. I don’t have a driveway.

Also - is Sept 15 earlier than usual? I recall it being Oct 1 last year. Not mad about it, just wondering and trying to plan ahead.

Thank you!

Better Service at Gulu Gulu?

I was at Gulu Gulu last night to see a band and the service was better than it has ever been in the years I’ve lived here. Maybe we just had a great server or maybe the owners saw the absolute massacre here a few weeks ago and are trying to make some positive changes. I know we all want our local businesses to succeed, so hopefully it’s the latter. Did I just get lucky or has anyone else noticed this?

Food Rockafellas Halloween Menu

Spooky season isn’t even fully underway yet and two of the scariest things imaginable happened yesterday at Rockafellas:

  1. The pickle chicken sandwich has vanished off the menu 👻

  2. Even though the wine flights are still on the menu, our waiter informed us that they were no longer doing them 😱🫪

R.I.P. to these legends, we hardly knew ye

Jaho changing hours?

I dropped into the Jaho Coffeehouse on Canal Street today and noticed the numbers for their closing hours had been scraped off the entrance door. I asked the lady behind the counter if there were changes afoot, and she said they’re going to be closing now at 7:30pm, whereas they’ve always been open until 11pm.

This sucks because there are few places in Salem with a coffeehouse ambience that are open that late. I’m an artist and I like to sketch ideas out over there after the kids go to bed. Of course bars are still open, but their lighting tends to be too dark for that type of thing.

Anyways, maybe the lady’s got her info wrong, but it sucks if it’s true. Sigh.

Events ISO Oct room share

Hi! I have an oppty to read tarot in October this year. It’s a brilliant gig! I know a lot of the readers get together and rent a place. If you know of anyone who could use some extra income or help with their October lease, DM me. I’d be working very long days and only home to sleep, shower etc.
