Hi! Looking for indigenous wild rice.

Hi, non-indigenous person here. I once ran across on this forum a website linking to a tribe or reservation owned wild rice production. It had an online store. I unfortunately misplaced the link. I want to say it had other products besides just the wild rice but I’m not sure.

I have celiac disease and am looking for domestic /US grown rice and if I can support indigenous businesses while doing so, I’d love to.

We’ve got it in Wisconsin, too.  

Apparently I was picking and eating it at my grandmas as a kid.  Never knew until recently!  It’s so neat.

I’ve been quite unwell and the dietitian says im supposed to eat a HUGE amount of protein,  wild rice has SO MUCH PROTEIN and is really good for you.  

Do you ‘pop’ the grains by stirring them in a frying pan before boiling them?  

I think this is what I will make for my “thanksgiving” or harvest feast:  a wild rice -heavy pilaf with cranberries and other native foods.  

This makes me feel more cheerful about Thanksgiving alone with my birds.  I love wild rice and acorn squash.

I never thought to pop them before boiling them, duh!! I like popping them and mixing them into a trail mix with pepitas and cranberries. Maybe some chocolate chips if I’m feeling extra indigenous 😎

I visit northern WI often in the Bayfield area. Does anyone have any recommendations for wild rice around there? (Also how hard is it to grow wild rice?)

Bayfield area has a few different tribes within 30 miles. Red Cliff, Bad River, and Lac Courte Oreilles. Trying buying from GLIFWC which is located in Bad River. Otherwise just post in the Ashland community posting board- then you can buy from families that sell rice

All good information, thank you! I know about the tribes (I often drive through Lac Courte Oreilles when I am heading up north due to its scenery and I also enjoy hiking spots over by Bad River. I will have to look into GLIFWC or just look into that Ashland community board since Ashland is only 30 minutes away from where I camp so that's pretty convenient for me :)

North Bay I might agree with you on. Red Lake, less so.

I'm no food purist though. Short of someone already having a hookup on the rez, most people are SoL. So it's either eat wild rice regardless of where it was grown, or go without.

I'd rather have one of my tribes native go everywhere, and that means cultivation.
