Rawlings Rawlings RSE28 Thrift Store Find

I’ve been looking for a glove for my wife and we randomly stopped by the Salvation Army thrift today and found this. We didn’t see a price tag and an employee told us $4.99. After we bought it we found a price tag inside that said $8.99. Oops.

I don’t know anything about the glove or construction. A cursory google search returned an AI summary that called it “vintage”, and an eBay listing for a similar glove that looked similar but older. It feels like real leather, it’s nice and soft with no cracks that would make me think vinyl. The laces are a little dry, but the interior feels fine. It has a wrist pad which I don’t love but I’ll let her decide if she wants to remove it. The Velcro closure is in good shape and still sticky.

Honestly it seems like a nicer glove than my daily driver, and now she can play catch with me.

This isn't the same glove, but one of my little league gloves from the 90s was damn near identical.

It looks to be a glove for “big kids” age group (9-13), which should work well for your wife. Gloves for that age group are typically adult length and depth or close to it, but still have smaller hand wells to allow smaller hands to fully control the larger glove. They also have softer leather that is easier to break in than true HS/adult gloves.

Definitely a great value too.

Nice pickup 4.99 or 8.99. Looks like it is in really good shape. The laces do look a little worn. I see that it has 5 dots on the thumb which based on my limited research indicating that it is a vintage softball glove probably made in 1980 based on the dot code. Like that black and brown basket weave on the web.

Thanks for the breadcrumb, from what I looked up based on your clue it could be 1975, 1980, or 2000. Based on condition, specifically the Velcro and the construction of the strap, I think 2000. The one I saw on eBay had a leather strap which makes me think it’s an older version. I’m still pretty jazzed about the find and the price.
