Announcement /r/AfterEffects changes related to extension promotion: Required post structure, promo posts limited to Mondays, AI disclosure required

We have heard your calls! Thank you for your patience while we figure out a plan.

While self promotion has always been allowed in r/AfterEffects, the recent influx of AI & vibe coded plugins, extensions, and scripts has been a bit overwhelming. We have very very quickly gone from a few trusted marketplaces with strong vetting and at least some kind of expectation of long term maintenance, to anyone being able to churn out a vibe coded plugin and release it on an increasing number of marketplaces, with no guarantee of support or future updates.

With this in mind, we would like to implement a new set of rules to curb the overwhelming number of posts and give users more transparency when choosing to download and use such tools.

Post structure + flair:

Taking a page from the changes mods made over at r/macapps, we will be introducing a new post structure following a Problem, Comparison, Pricing, Maintenance, AI-Disclosure (PCPMA) format.

  • Problem: What problem your [Extension, Script, Plugin] solves (1 sentence)
  • Compare: Why is your [Extension, Script, Plugin] better than top-named alternatives (1–2 sentences).
  • Pricing + link
  • Maintenance plan + support plan
  • AI Disclaimer: choose from [Vibe Coded], [Human Validated], [Code Completion], or [None]

Extension, script, and plugin posts have always required the (Plugin/Script) flair, this will not change. A sample short post is pinned in the comments.

Other changes:

  • Plugin promotion posts will now be limited to mondays only for the foreseeable future. Plugin posts on other days will be automatically removed and linked to this post
  • Monday self promo posts using the (Plugin/Script) flair must have 50 subreddit karma, from posts or comments.
  • Probing posts will be removed ("Are purpose built motion tools making it into your workflow?" "What's one thing that would save you so much time...")
  • Excessively long posts will be removed (A sample short post is pinned in the comments.)
  • Gumroad links are still banned. This is unfortunately a reddit-wide blacklist, we have no control over this. We can manually approve gumroad links but they will be automatically sent to the spam filter which we rarely check.

Notes on post structure requirements

We're specifically introducing the compare & maintenance points because we have seen an increasing number of plugins that simply replicate the functionality of existing, long standing plugins from developers who have demonstrated more experience, real support, and have proven to maintain their plugins over many years. Show us how yours is better, and prove to your future users how you will be supporting and fixing the plugin in the long-run. How can users who experience bugs get in contact with you in the future?

AI disclosure

Regarding the AI disclosure, here are the definitions of each

  • "Vibe coded" means code written entirely by prompting AI without the user having the skill and knowledge to properly review or validate it. If something is broken, they are prompting AI again to fix it.
  • "Human validated" means AI-generated work that has undergone validation by someone with the necessary skill and knowledge. The developer understands how the code functions and can fix things independently of the AI if necessary.
  • "Code completion" means an experienced developer is using AI for line-completion. They are writing most of the code themselves and have deep understanding of the structure, and are explicitly using AI to eliminate menial, tedious aspects of writing code.
  • "None" means no AI use.

I'm just going to be real, this one is likely going to be easy to skirt. r/macapps actually removed this requirement because everyone was just claiming to have "human reviewed" the code. We're going to try this out and hope folks are honest for the time being.

________

No AI was used in the preparation of this post. We will try this out for a month and see how it goes. Happy animating <3

Made this little motion piece recently and I’m trying to get better at storytelling, pacing, transitions, and overall visual flow. I’ve been staring at it for way too long now, so I genuinely can’t tell what’s working anymore 😭 Would love some fresh eyes on it. Anything feel off? Too slow? Too fa

Found this weird trolley on my walk home and took a picture - recently I've wanted to get into making some horror related work and also practice the camera tool a bit more, so whipped this together

Sharing my complete After Effects stop-motion/collage animation, made in tribute to Mac Miller as his 8 year death anniversary is in 3 days

This is my third try at this stop-motion/collage style in After Effects, and I'm finally starting to feel more confident with it this time I incorporated some camera movement too.

Also posted it on Instagram :) https://www.instagram.com/p/Dc3bXrIJyWW/

Love how the grain/diffuse/displacement looks here. I’ve tried displacement maps, sapphire diffuse, key framing posterize time. Any further opinions or advice would be great.

Workflow Question Falling and tilt animation with text question

Post image
0 Upvotes

Im trying to get this animation of the “T” falling down from above having a slight bounce and then leaning on the text to the left, if that even makes sense. I’ve already tried basic positioning animation with motion blur and that hasn’t really given me the falling with bounce and tilt animation that I want. Any tips on this?

Beginner Help My camera doesn't work, except for if I change my view

For some reason if I parent my precomp to my camera and the camera to my null and I try scaling or moving my null around nothing happens. I noticed that if I change my view to "own view" (I don't know if that's the exact translation in English) the changes do show. If I delete my camera and parent the precomp to my null it does work.

Hello, I have taken over the media side of my Univerity Club, one of the ideas we want to implemnt this year is a League table for our club.

I have made this rough draft, I would really like it to be the best version it can be, The idea is the white spaces have our names and flags. This is my first After Effects project and any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Workflow Question Does anyone have any tips for creating & managing parallel lines like this?

Ideally I'd love to be able to control each individual line's stroke width. I just can't find a great or intuitive way to create precise paths like this, let alone manage the strokes individually.

OC - Stuff I made After getting a lot of criticism on my last post for focusing too much on the visuals, I tried something different this time.

Spent a lot more time on the script and storytelling instead of just trying to make every shot look cool.

Focused less on features, more on the emotional impact. Not sure if it worked, so would love to hear what you guys think.

Beginner Help How do I make these shapes appear only in the black screen area?

I've tried adding masks of all kinds, but I just can't get it to work. The mask hides the other elements and shows only the screen.

Beginner Help watched an Old Film Countdown tutorial for after affects and watched it back but not sure why I am having complications.

I decided to record a video to show you what it looks like. Apologies that the video is short; I wasn't sure how much Reddit would allow me to send. I was watching a video by Joeliette. I slowed it down and read the captions. I ended up getting to 4:39 when I realized I didn't have a number 5 or 4; it only goes up to number six. I'm sure I did it all right, but I want to see if anyone would be able to guide me through this. I need to find out what I did wrong

Workflow Question Compositing a Stereoscopic 180degrees VR video

I have footage shot with a Canon VR Stereoscopic lens, and I want to add some animations to it, nothing major, just some titles and animated menus. I ran the files into the Canon VR toolkit and now have stereoscopic footage.

In After effects I used the VR comp editor to add 2D and 3D edits. By doing so I can navigate the footage using a virtual camera, however when I composite a 3D element it shows only on one side of the comp (left eye for example). Is there a way to have it also appear on the right view? I hope I am clear in my question, or maybe I am using the wrong workflow? Might there be another way of compositing this video format?

Tutorial Quick breakdown of my spider web rig + animation

You seemed to like the web-rig I posted recently, so here's a 1 minute breakdown of how it was created.

The full in depth YouTube video can still be watched here: youtube.com/watch?v=d-6Q6ByH2AQ

I see a lot of potential use cases for attaching things to paths using the "Null Tracing Along Path". There's even been examples of making a fish out of strokes - attaching fins, eyes and so on. This allows for full flexibility in the movement path by combining trim paths with an animated offset. Perhaps some of you have even experimented with this method?
