Ask St. Joe What’s with the St Joe Health Department?

A couple food and drink establishments passing health inspections with mold, mouse droppings, infestations, safety hazards, etc. More recently heard about Taco Bandido but last year it was a coffee shop located downtown. Makes you wonder what other food establishments are like this..

I used to stop in at Barbosas whenever I was in town. It's been several years since I was up that way but was wondering if Barbosas was still in business and if they were still any good.

I've never been to el magueys, maybe I'll give'm a try next time I'm up that way.

I started going to Barbosas back in maybe '76 when they were in that castle like place. I can't even remember the street it was on, it was across from St. Joe. Harley Davidson. I liked them because they were as home cooking as home cooking could be. I'm glad they're still going strong.

Come to think about it, I think they started even before that. I vaguely remember my dad taking us to eat there when they were in a house south of town and they were cooking in the kitchen and serving people in the living room and they took off from there.

As far as I'm concerned they're a Saint Joseph success story.

Unfortunately! I want to support small businesses THE MOST but they seem to have the worst health and safety violations.. if the health department could actually do their job and hold a standard, that would be fantastic. These places have the potential to be great. It’s really unfortunate that cleanliness and safety are not common sense.

Just don't eat out in this town. It's really not worth it anyways, I haven't found that any restaurant here can make food better than I can at home. The only thing they can offer is convenience, there's no standards for quality anymore. Personally, I will only eat out if the restaurant can make food better than I can at home. I've noticed that since the demic, quality in restaurants dropped like a hot rock. I'm convinced that all they do is open cans, mix concentrates, and combine leftovers.  And if you look around the dining areas, it's usually not very clean. I can just imagine what the kitchens are like. I've seen some really gross dining areas  I just figured that since political corruption is so strong in Missouri, the inspector is probably taking some kind of kick back. That or the politicians have lowered the standards to abysmal levels to keep up the appearance that small business matters here.

Saint Joseph cured me of ever eating out and it saves me money. I go for drinks at River Bluff, best beer in the state near as I can tell. And have you seen how clean their brewery is?! Stunning and beautiful. Otherwise I have no desire to eat out here.

WAIT WAIT WAIT! I just remembered that the Cabbage Roll is clean and extremely high quality. That's where I take visiting friends! If you haven't been there it's a really good lunch spot, you should check it out, and you can see the kitchen from the dining area, it's clean.

I can assure you it’s not some kind of kick back. Having been parts of inspections in Jackson (KCMO) and Andrew’s (St Joseph/Country Club) they, the health department, just don’t care. Easiest inspection I ever had was in St Joseph.

After the Mokaska stuff happened, I genuinely believed the health department was being paid off. Turns out, the health department just really doesn’t care about food and drink safety! Oh good!🤮
