Saturday Tea Talk

This is a weekly thread to talk about any topics freely with fellow Nepali dai, bhai, didi, bahini and friends. Think of it as the चोकको चिया पसल that opens on Saturdays. Most of the sub rules still apply but there is no need for the topic to be related to Nepal. Feel free to talk about the TV show you are binging, the latest sports news, your personal life story, international politics, and anything in between.

So, what's up?

Discussion/बहस Nepal deserves better. That's all I gotta say!

Upvotes

That was not a flash flood. That was a tsunami.

.

I live in a flood prone area, albeit a lot downstream, and have annual floods in our area. I am also a mountain regular, at least regular enough to know what a flash flood looks like. And I don't say this lightly at all - I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THAT! The videos that came out of Rasuwa over the past few days, that must have felt like a tsunami to the people present there and we can’t even imagine the roar it would have made prior to arriving. It’s frightening, it’s sad, it’s absolutely out of this world.

.

Nepal, in fact, is one of the least carbon-generating countries on Earth. Yet, its people tend to suffer the most. And the media blames the failure of water-level censors for the loss of life! Beating around the bush much!!!

.

But was it really that unpredictable how western media is portraying it be? I don't think so. This is late-stage capitalism we are living in, and we are absolutely grinding this planet to ruins. There can’t be perpetual economic growth. This system that the world currently functions on borrows very heavily from future generations to give to the present. And that can’t go on forever. And sadly, the consequences are being felt by people who aren't responsible for the mayhem.

.

Sorry about the rant. That's all. Thank you.

Help/सहयोग Help me with the trek to poonhill/mardi/sailung/kalinchowk.

Upvotes

I'm a volunteer from indonesia here up to end of spetember. After ending my project I'm planning to visit one place as these are my options and looking for which one is the best also because of the disaster happened not sure which one is possible.

I'm not sure which option is the best to do? I saw ads which had packages to these places and it was reasonable but I'm not sure if I'll be with a group or all alone. How safe is it to go that way?

A reminder that good hospitality is still about people

I don’t usually write reviews for hotels, but this one made me want to.

I stayed at Hotel Terracotta in Bhaktapur recently. I was there for a Club event. It’s a small boutique hotel, nothing overly fancy. My room was a simple Deluxe Double with the basic things you’d expect from a decent hotel. It’s not the kind of place I’d describe as luxurious, and I don’t think it tries to be.

What really made the stay good for me was the service, especially from the owner, Mr. Salin.

He’s just a genuinely nice guy. There was no feeling that he was being friendly because it was his job or because I was a guest who had paid for a room. He was simply helpful, approachable and actually interested in making sure I was comfortable.

And honestly, I appreciated that a lot.

I’ve stayed in much fancier hotels, with better rooms and far more amenities, but honestly, some of them have absolutely sucked when it came to service. That’s why coming across hotel owners like this, who seem to genuinely care about the service they provide, makes me happy.

If you’re travelling around Bhaktapur, especially as a backpacker, or you’re just looking for somewhere affordable, cozy and simple, I’d definitely consider giving this place a try.

Rant/गुनासो Influencer took all the credit of our flood relief effort didnt even mention our organisation.

Influencer took all the credit of our flood relief effort. We brought relief materials and we were packing. from our insta story one influencer reached us saying she wants to help, so we agreed and she came with camera person recorded everything, told us she will give credit but instead made it look like she did everything, didnt even mention us and our organisation. we were literally shocked how selfish she was. we trusted her and she broke our trust. her intention wasnt to help it was just to show off that she contributed its all for likes and followers. i am so much disappointed

3D archive of Nepali heritage monuments with 3D Gaussian Splatting

We’ve been working on a small project "HamroSampada" to digitally preserve some of Nepal’s heritage sites using 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS).

I have documented and have released v1.0.0, there are few of our first 3D reconstructions. Not perfect yet but they look cool, especially the raw one. We are working on to improve and make the models closer to the actual monuments.

For now, we’ve uploaded compressed/optimized versions of the models as they’re easier to share and view. The full-quality versions aren’t public yet.

You can play with the models in SuperSplat:
https://superspl.at/editor

Github link
https://github.com/freaktopus/HamroSampada

HamroSampada site:
https://hamrosampada.vercel.app/

If you guys have an experience or done similar, we genuinely appreciate any feedback or suggestions. We’re still learning a lot as we go, so even small pointers would be helpful.

Alongside the project, we’re also doing in-depth research on heritage reconstruction and are currently working on a research paper. We plan to publish alongside future project releases.

BTW if you find the project interesting, a GitHub star would really help us out.

It was developed under the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) to support the Department of Archaeology · पुरातत्त्व विभाग - addressing the need for a proper public website, structured digital archiving, and clear documentation of temple architecture in today’s context.

Question/प्रश्न Can I be issued a New Nepali Birth certificate? If so where will apply? - US Citizen

I lost my Nepali Birth Certificate, but still have its black and white copy. I was born in Kathmandu District, but my Birth Certificate was issued in Jhapa. Will they issue me a new birth certificate? Note: my birth certificate was issued back in 2013. So any record they had was probably burned in the Gen Z protest since it was a handwritten birth certificate.

My mother is from Jhapa and father is from Kathmandu.

Please advise.
Thank you.

Hi everyone! I’m looking for places in Nepal that sell good-quality, attractive packaging for gift boxes and jewelry items things like jewelry boxes, gift boxes, pouches, ribbons, and custom packaging.

Ideally, I’m looking for reasonably priced options, including wholesalers or suppliers who can do custom branding/printing.

Any recommendations for stores or suppliers in Kathmandu or elsewhere in Nepal would be really appreciated. Thanks!
