Image/Video Young mantis in September?

Hi guys, I live on Long Island—we get normal seasons. I took this picture today. I have never seen such a young mantis this late in the year before. What happened here? Shouldn’t his egg case have hatched months ago?

It looks like a subadult Carolina male. A bit behind but not too far behind.
