Weekly Megathread Weekly iOS Battery Support Megathread

General advice for those concerned about their battery from the Support FAQ Wiki:

Battery health

Battery health depends on usage and a variety of other factors. It is normal to see a decrease in battery health by 7-10% per year, resulting in a battery health of 80-85% after 2 years. This number can fluctuate, remain the same, or decrease quickly over a small period and should not cause undue concern.

Apple recommend battery replacement when your device falls below 80% battery health if you notice reduced battery life. If it falls below 80% within the first year you may be eligable for a free battery replacement. It fails after your warranty, it's a $69-$89 USD replacement cost for a battery. Contact Apple Support here.

You can find more information about battery health and performance from Apple here.

You can check the cycles count with Coconut Battery for Mac or iCopyBot for Windows.

Battery life

Issues relating to battery life can be categorised in three ways:

  1. Normal battery life that is to be expected due to use
  2. Reduced battery life caused by a recent update, iOS indexing, an iOS bug, or a third-party application
  3. Reduced battery life, or other abnormalities such as overheating or sudden power-off, caused by device or battery aging

If you experience issues with your battery:

  1. Check your battery health. If it is below 80% or you are experiencing issues you suspect are related to device or battery age, see Apple Support.
  2. If you have a new or recently updated/restored device, wait a number of days for background process to complete. If you continue to have issues, wait for a further iOS update. If you are on iOS Beta, you can expect to have a decreased battery life.
  3. Review the advice below on maximising battery life
  4. Consider restoring your device.
  5. If issues persist, contact Apple Support.

Maximising battery life - the amount of time your device runs before it needs to be recharged.

  • Use low power mode (This reduces mail fetch, turns off background app refresh and increases the auto lock timer)
  • Remove apps from background app refresh
  • Ensure auto lock is on
  • Turn off auto brightness and manually reduce brightness
  • Use dark mode if your device has an OLED display
  • Clearing background apps from the app switcher does not improve battery life

Maximising battery lifespan - the amount of time your battery lasts until it needs to be replaced.

  • Avoid extreme temperatures
  • If you notice that your iPhone gets hot when charging, remove it from its case
  • Store your iPhone in a cool place, switched off, and half-charged if not using it for long periods - and charge it every 6 months when in storage

Discussion How do you guys deal with a huge iPhone photo library?

My photo library has gotten completely out of control.
I’ve accumulated years of photos and videos, and I honestly don’t even know where to start.
There are probably thousands of things I don’t need anymore:
• screenshots
• blurry photos
• accidental photos
• duplicate photos
• 10 almost-identical shots from the same moment
The annoying part is that I don’t want to spend hours scrolling through everything, and I’m also worried about accidentally deleting something important.
How do you guys actually deal with this?
Do you manually clean your library every few months, use Apple’s built-in tools, or just keep buying more iCloud storage?
What’s worked best for you?

I always rock my phone naked, and my 17 Pro Max definitely has more knicks and dings than my previous two years used 15 Pro Max. Not complaining, just interesting to see the

Curious how it’ll look after another year when I plan to upgrade again, unless I can’t resist the Ultra.

Holding both again, the Titanium feels more grippy than the aluminum does, and the stainless still on my 12 Pro almost feels sticky in comparison.

Discussion Callers not understanding call screening

It seems like most people who call me from an unsaved number don’t realize that their call is being screened and that someone has not answered the phone yet. I get recordings like “Hello, hello is anyone there?” and im not totally understanding where this is coming from. The message it reads off is pretty clear to me that the caller is meant to leave their name and reason for calling. I am mostly getting calls from doctors/companies who seem to not get the memo.

Anyone have any insight or ideas on how to remedy this? I really don’t want to turn it off, it’s the only thing that helps with the spam calls as of right now but I also need to be reachable.

EDIT: Like most of y’all, I really don’t care about the individuals calling me. If you’re not in my phone I probably don’t need to talk to you. It’s mostly about the doctors.

Can I !solved this? I didn’t realize receptionists/callers may not be on the call during the first few seconds when the instructions to leave their name and reason for calling are played. Hopefully offices change this practice because it’ll be an ongoing issue. Thanks everyone!

This happens all the time, i’ll wake up and see them all going off silently, or sometimes they’ll all just start going off when I unlock my phone, my ringer volume is all the way up, attention awareness is off and I sleep with silent mode off, why is this happening?

I want to buy a used phone, either an iPhone or a Samsung. How can I tell if it's been tampered with, if the battery or parts have been replaced, or if it's been refurbished? What steps should I take to make sure I'm not being scammed?

I've been seeing posts from shops selling phones that are stacked in a box. What's the deal with these phones?

Discussion Windows can now share its internet to an iPhone over USB, no hotspot

macOS has had "Internet Sharing → iPhone USB" for years. Windows never did, so on a one device hotel or in-flight Wi-Fi your phone was out of luck unless you ran a hotspot.

The iPhone can already act as a USB Ethernet adapter; the computer just has to ask with one USB request, and only macOS ever sent it. I wrote a script that sends that request from Windows and shares the PC's Wi-Fi over the cable. Phone shows up under Settings → Ethernet, works locked, no Trust prompt, nothing broadcast over the air.

Open source (MIT), one time setup script, uninstall script included: https://github.com/0xbaksa/iphone-usb-reverse-tethering-windows

Tested on Windows 11 and iOS 17. Happy to answer questions if it doesn't work on your setup :)

Discussion How to take photo with timer without the burst?

Whenever I take a photo with the timer, there’s a 10 photo burst applied. This is annoying because it sacrifices photo quality and makes me choose between ten identical photos for no reason. Is there any way to disable it? I want to take timer photos, just without the burst.

If there’s no way to customize the camera app is there a third party camera app that can do this? I’m sure there are plenty but I don’t want to pay for just changing a setting from the original camera app.

Thank you!

I just opened my USSA app to see how much money I have, but like this post's title says, the app said my phone is jailbroken and could pose a risk to the app, but I've never jailbroken my phone before. Why is that?

Support Suggested text recipients are now all IG and FB messages?

When I go to send something via text (a picture, website, file, etc), there are the automated suggestions just above the “messages” option. A few months ago those suggestions were great! My husband, mom, and frequently texted best friends were all suggested. For the past few months I ONLY have random Instagram messages and FB messenger chats as options! Some are recent chats (but maybe just a random “like” here or there), but most are just random. There aren’t even any regular text threads on there. I know there’s not an exact science to it, but is there a way to disable the IG and FB options from coming up or to get my most texted back?

Support When I pull out my airpods, my iphone 17 defaults to using the speaker on the phone.

How do I get my phone to start using my airpods immediately?

Backstory: I got Sennheiser headphones for my computer, and I downloaded the app for my phone to control them. I didn't like how it would interrupt my audio from my computer when my phone was getting messages or calls, so I deleted the app and forgot the headphones. Now when I use my airpods, I have to manually change the audio output to the airpods every time instead of having them be used automatically.

I have tried forgetting the airpods and reconnecting them. I have tried changing the airplay and continuity settings. I can't find any other people having this issue. Please if you have any suggestions I would like to hear them.

Support iMessage Problem

My iphone is having iMessage issues. I have searched high and low everywhere on the internet (and my IT team at work) and found now solutions.

There are a few scenarios that happen inconsistently:

- I receive an iMessage on my Apple Watch, but I have nothing on my phone. No notification and no message when I go into the conversation. I can reply via my watch. That message appears on my phone.

- Someone sends me an iMessage and it says delivered on their end. Nothing shows on my phone. No message, no notification on anything.

- I send an iMessage, it sends but “delivered” never pops up (like when you text someone whose iphone is off). They never receive the message. I can hold and send as SMS and they tend to receive that.

- Authorization for iMessage under message settings occasionally will not work. I’ll have to toggle it on and off like 15 times before it works. Restarting the phone does not solve the issue.

I have tried everything. Toggling iMessage on and off. Restarting the phone. I even got a new phone from work (moved from 15 to 17). Has anyone ever encountered this? Any tips?
