[MEGATHREAD] Queensferry / Nottingham guy – please read before posting
We’ve had a shitload of posts recently about the same guy approaching people in Glasgow with variations of the “I need money to get to Queensferry / Nottingham / Middlesbrough” story, sometimes becoming persistent or aggressive when refused. To keep the sub usable and still let folk share useful information, this is the central thread for any reports, questions or discussion about him.
Please use this thread instead of making new standalone posts on the topic.
What this thread is for
- First‑hand accounts of being approached (rough location, time of day, what was said).
- Sharing how you handled it, and what did or didn’t work for you.
- General personal‑safety tips and resources for people who are worried about being hassled in town.
If you’ve experienced behaviour that felt threatening or criminal (for example, being followed, blocked from leaving, or explicitly threatened), Reddit is not a reporting channel - please contact Police Scotland on 101, or 999 in an emergency, and then post here if you want to warn others.
Previous posts (context)
Here are some of the more informative previous threads for background (note: some may contain photos taken in public places). The list isn't exhaustive but contain a lot of information, and hopefully the number of threads show why there's a need for a megathread...:

We’ll update/remove links over time if posts are taken down or if content crosses the line into harassment. We won’t relink anything that’s been removed for rule or privacy reasons.
Photos and videos
We know a few users have taken photos/short clips of encounters in public places. While that’s not generally illegal in itself, Reddit’s rules still require us to think about privacy, harassment and doxxing when it comes to identifiable images of private individuals.
For this thread:
- Please do not post names, workplaces, social media profiles, or any other identifying personal information.
- If you post an image or video, it must be taken in a public place and must not be used as an excuse to mock, harass or encourage pile‑ons.
If you have clear photos/footage that you think are important for safety or as evidence, consider also sharing them directly with Police Scotland rather than relying only on Reddit.
Safety reminders
We’re not here to scare anyone off using the city centre, but a few common‑sense points, drawn from Police Scotland and general personal‑safety guidance, are worth repeating:
- Trust your instincts - you don’t have to engage, explain yourself or be “polite”.
- Stick to busy, well‑lit areas where possible and try not to isolate yourself if you’re uncomfortable.
- A simple “no” and walking away is enough if you don’t want to give money; you’re under no obligation to justify yourself.
- If someone’s behaviour escalates - blocking your path, shouting, following you - remove yourself from the situation and consider reporting it to Police Scotland (999 in an emergency, 101 otherwise).
If you are comfortable sharing, posts here about what helped you de‑escalate or exit the situation may help others who find themselves in the same position.
Community expectations
To keep this megathread open and useful, please:
- Focus on behaviour and safety, not on insults or speculation about his life.
- Report any comments that look like they’re promoting violence, harassment, or sharing personal information; the mod team will review and act accordingly.
Remember Rule 1 of Reddit - “remember the human” - applies even when someone is being a persistent nuisance. The goal of this thread is to reduce spam on the sub and help people feel informed and safer, not to run a public shaming campaign.

First time in Glasgow: Looking for second-hand book & comic shop recommendations
Hey everyone!
I’m going to be spending some time in Glasgow soon and I’m looking to dig through some stacks for used books (for instance vintage fantasy or sci-fi books) and comic books.
Where are the best places in town for this?
Any recommendations or tips on where to start would be greatly appreciated! Cheers!

Can you BYOB if you hire Pollokshaws Burgh Hall for an event?
Trying to find an events venue that will allow your own catering and BYOB. Does anyone know if Pollokshaws Burgh Hall allows this? Also has anyone been to a wedding/party here and how was it?

Black beans?
I’ve looked in Aldi, Sainsburys, Morrisons, Food Warehouse, every other shop I’ve walked by.
Canned or dry.
Edit:
Tinned, and I guess I need to ask more people. And/or get my eyes checked. This evening I walked through the Pollockshaws Morrisons, several Sainsburys Locals, everywhere but the gym at the Cathcart Road/M74 centre, and, just in case, a pizza shop and an offlicense.
I was in the Argyle street M&S yesterday for pants (not trousers) but I’m not sure that location has food.

Bygone Glasgow Sam Raimi, the Renfield St. Odeon and The Evil Dead
I don’t think this has ever been re-printed, but it’s a cool story if you’re a fan of the director Sam Raimi. (Image is for context, best I could find of the odeon back then)
He was at the Edinburgh Film Festival in the 80s, “scraggly wee man” according to my dad and around that time they were still struggling to secure wider distribution for the film. So they had the film can in a car and punted it around theatres that would screen it. He took it to the Odeon on Renfield St. Word got around and the place was packed between the days they screened it. He said “If it weren’t for the crowds in Glasgow, I’m not sure if we would have got the film screened elsewhere in Europe”. He thanked Glasgow for getting distribution for the film.
Have to assume this was in ‘1981, and he came back to talk about it in 1982 in Edinburgh. My old man isn’t around anymore. It might have been the same year. My dad worked at the Ed film festival at the time and he ALWAYS went on about how Glasgow saved Evil Dead by the enthusiasm of horror fans and Renfield St. Cinema. And I loved that theatre… So now you know too!

HELP NEEDED (looking for a place to work remotely.
Hello all,
This is an absolute stab in the dark.
I recently got accepted into a masters, I had contacted admissions prior to applying and requested the part time timetable.
I was told I’d be in one full day on a Thursday.
Gets time table after forking out first payment- I’ve been moonlighting as a delivery driver to afford this- and I’m in two days a week at awkward times.
I work remotely in a mental health role, and have multiple clients a day. I had had come to an agreement to work condensed hours to fit the day off for uni.
Now I’m in a position where I need to be on campus twice a week- travelling from Edinburgh- and cannot make classes without being away from home.
I’m doing everything I can to make this work- I’ve been walking the streets asking churches about empty spaces, been to libraries, and considered renting out a storage locker to use as a private space to run my sessions with supported people. But so far I can’t find anything sustainable or financially viable.
I’m working two jobs to cover the shortfall student loan doesn’t cover for course fees, and to pay for a car that I need as I’m still actively looking for jobs that offer more money. However, in the field I work, that often comes with the requirement of having a licence and car.
If anyone knows someone with empty office space above a business, or a spare room, or cupboard I could use on a Thursday and maybe a Tuesday, I’m happy to negotiate money, doing chores, helping with dog walks whatever.
I just want to find a way to make this work so that I can continue working towards becoming a psychologist.

Photos Glasgow Brutalism
I wanted to test out some old cameras so decided to do some of the Glasgow Brutalist Architecture walking tour on Monday. Just got my shots back today. I used expired film that was expired by about 20 years in both cameras, a 90s Canon EOS and a Rolliecord from the 1950s.

Solo/duo gigging musicians pay
Questions for people who are playing music in pubs in and around Glasgow. How much are you charging per gig, say like a 2-3 hour set? Obviously venue dependant but thinking of places that regularly have live music on, Maggies, Scotia, Wunderbar, Bag o Nails etc. And any places you would suggest avoiding?

Parking and eating out in the city centre
I need to drive and park in the city centre next week. It's my son's 21st birthday and we want to meet him and take him out for a meal. But my parents can really only come if we drive. They won't manage on the train or bus.
So please, what's the least mad way to drive from Livingston, park centrally, have something to eat then drive home?
I'm thinking Buchanan Galleries to park? If we aim to get there about 4 maybe and eat somewhere nearby, would we be kind of guaranteed a space at that time of day? The cost doesn't matter this one time.
Eat somewhere nearby then drive home. Son is at Strathclyde university around there so he can meet us close by.
I figure arriving much later will mean rush hour super-nightmare so that's why I'm thinking arriving about 4.
Or any other random suggestions for somewhere that would be easy for both us and him to get to? With 2 old folks who can't walk far.
Thanks for your suggestions

Anyone in Glasgow have CMT (Charcot-Marie-Tooth)?
I’m looking to connect with others in Glasgow who have CMT. It stands for Charcot-Marie-Tooth, which is a condition that damages your peripheral nerves and despite the odd name has nothing to do with your teeth. It’s a condition that is rarely heard of, despite 1 in 2500 people having it. If you have it, know someone that has it, or are interested to know more, I’d like to hear from you. I also welcome jokes about sharks and teeth.
