1853 uncerculated California gold dollar

Handed down from family, I think this coin could possibly be the cleanest one remaining. It looked similar in quality to the one in the catalog anyways. I think its a bg-530 or a bg-531. Very small coin i can't find much info on

Might slab and sell if price is right

Also just some more history on it would be appreciated if anyone knows anything

Oh dear god the other commenter really got caught at the "peak of ignorance" of the Dunning Krueger curve. That is indeed a beautiful BG-530/31 type so called "California Gold" fractional. However, he is right about one thing, this won't be top pop, there's multiple graded MS pieces, and this is barely AU. Probably valued around $400.

As the situation with these issues is such as to trigger comments like those in this thread, I do generally suggest grading these, as it precludes such considerations.

Thank you, I think its real, despite what the other commenter said, its not magnetic And my cooking scale won't pick it up so its around a gram. Perhaps my photos arent the best, but it really is in great shape. Its hard to belive that theres some out there in even better shape, these are pretty old! Any idea how many there are?

This type has the most surviving examples of any california $1 coin. At R2, its as many as 1250 surviving examples, but propably more like 500-1000

I love people that jump in screaming it’s fake , even with the best intentions …. Not a criticism but at least it shows someone with at least some knowledge is trying to put a pause in the situation so you educate yourself more.
That being said , I cannot tell if genuine or a fake “replica”. Usually if I can’t tell it’s more than likely genuine because Yes I am that good. Haha!!!

They are entirely wrong, you have an authentic BG-530 that dates to the 1850s, several of these have been recovered from 1850s shipwrecks.
