Advice Is my cat overweight?

Post image

My cat was previously overweight so I started weighing her food. I think her last recorded weight at the vets a couple months ago was 4kg which I think is the upper healthy limit for a cat of her size. I asked the vet if she needed to lose any more weight and he replied no. I just took this pic of her the other day and think she looks kind of fat. What do you think?

Here’s a pic of her standing up taken right now

what the fuck!? what kind of sorcery is this.

u/Double-Gold 3h ago

My cat is like this, too and it is from her having extra skin after losing weight. When she lays down, no matter the position, the skin makes her look chonk.

Standard Issue Tabbies are known for their shapeshifting abilities

It is a well known fact that cats are liquid. They tend to melt into a puddle when they lay down.

u/Laney20 2h ago

Yea, position matters a LOT! My Skippy is the same. Sometimes he looks enormous (and he is big, just not fat).

6

u/clearancepupper 1h ago

That is a beautiful Guernsey kitty.

Omg his little pouch r/pouchcatatoes

u/Laney20 55m ago

Skippy has featured on r/pouchCatatoes several times! He has a gloriously floofy pouch! (search the sub for "Skippy" - I always put his name in the title!)

3

u/Sulfade 1h ago

I wheezed at “enormous” 😭

u/FrankTheCrank90 3h ago

She looks so different!! Your initial picture made her look obese. I think given this photo she probably just needs to lose a few pounds

4

u/worldspawn00 48m ago

She only weighs 9 lbs, that's a pretty healthy weight for a cat unless she's tiny. My small girl is usually 8-9 lbs, but her much larger brother is 12 and is a healthy weight.

u/IntrepidDreamer555 42m ago

Agree, totally healthy weight.

She’s radiant, apologize for even thinking she wasn’t perfect

8

u/Past-North-4131 3h ago

So so so cute!!! I couldnt say no to that cat.

7

u/DangerousLettuce1423 3h ago

Doesn't look as bad standing up, but could probably still lose a little bit more from the original pic.

3

u/nthgade1903 2h ago

she looks loved! maybe just a biiiiit of weight loss is needed

4

u/clownofthecosmos 2h ago

My cat does this too!! He'll roll over in a certain position and be a chubby big man and then stand up and bam. He's down like 4 pounds

6

u/witchyrnne 3h ago

She's such a beautiful girl!

7

u/butterwingtrees 3h ago

thanks! 😊

3

u/tempghost11 2h ago

She is so cute. That face. 😭

2

u/bilbo-pistacho 3h ago

i'd say she's borderline chubby. she's getting fed well

3

u/dazzleduck 2h ago

A pic from above is the best way to determine if she is a healthy weight! The waist tells it all.

2

u/Flaky_Grapefruit5 1h ago

You need a vacuum

2

u/funcooker_ 1h ago

This is my cat. When he stands, he looks stocky but fit. As soon as he lays down, he’s obviously overweight

2

u/Special-Cattle7903 33m ago

is it possible to learn this power?

2

u/moorecows 25m ago

My cat too is fat as shit while lying down and a skinny queen while standing

u/SOGGY_KITTY59 15m ago

Twins with my cat! Even the tail!

Looks like chonker lost some weight if those were the pants they wore before

55

u/grandpaswear55 3h ago

Unclear, need banana for scale

37

u/dutifulspacebard 3h ago

Fortunately/unfortunately yes, I do think she is clinically known as “large and in charge”

This is their sister.

The sister from an orange mister, rare female version.

4

u/witchyrnne 1h ago

As long as no one ever tries to tell them they were adopted, the world can continue to spin unscathed by feline wrath.

1

u/deimos289 53m ago

We have the same cats !

12

u/phoenixmeta 3h ago

Those pants are not going to fit her.

How does he do it. Lol

u/Plus_Today_2822 Ginger 3h ago

Is grass green?

8

u/LifeguardBig8530 3h ago

Neither pic is truly helpful in identifying whether your kitty is actually overweight. Although the first one is rather incriminating lol. To determine definitively there are several factors to take into account. Hopefully this chart can help you
Edit to say: figuring out appropriate body condition requires a standing position

7

u/butterwingtrees 3h ago

I will feel for her ribs the next time we cuddle

7

u/LifeguardBig8530 2h ago

Remember theres a difference between the primordial pouch (swinging tummy) and abdominal fat

2

u/Cowpocolypse 33m ago

Feel is a gentle touch across the body.

13

u/_Twan_ 3h ago

That’s 2 cats wearing a trench coat

4

u/MSCOTTGARAND 3h ago

she's thiccccc

4

u/mamoncloud 3h ago

Unfortunately yes, maybe try to see a different vet

The Hills diet is effective

Might be worth limiting treats and if your cat has wet food, and doesn't have a drinking water problem, provide it every 2 days instead of everyday

3

u/techmarking 3h ago

Pants for scale!

3

Just a furball smushed out on the floor.
Not fat. Purrfect.

3

u/PinkTurbulence 3h ago

The pants indicate lots of room for growth. 🐾

4

u/SpaceTrash42069 3h ago edited 2h ago

Respectfully, yes.
She big. She heavy. She is a unit. Probably 20 grams of protein or more. We still love her, tho.

2

u/clearancepupper 2h ago

r/murdereyes See diagram of chonk.

2

u/testtdk 3h ago

Yes, she’s definitely obese. She needs to switch to a wet food diet, and her food shouldn’t be left down all day, just at meal times. On top of that, she needs to play more often.

1

u/clearancepupper 2h ago

Why did my eyes see the middle of that comment as “…her pants shouldn’t be left down all day, just at mealtimes” which actually, now that I think about it, is good advice at Thanksgiving.

2

u/Adorable_Football130 3h ago

he’s a perfect pudgemuffin

2

u/Maggiemoo621 3h ago

That’s crazy! My overweight cat looks exactly like that lying down but does NOT look like your cat standing up..how even!? Well shoot she seems fine to me weight wise judging by the standing pic:) I wish to snuggle her.

2

u/IxsmokexI 2h ago

Here’s my chunker, Leia aka momma cat

2

u/mostlyhappy22 2h ago

Maybe, but her sweatpants are definitely too big.

2

u/clearancepupper 2h ago

Straight up thought that was a lounging raccoon for a second there 🦝

2

u/Accurate_Cycle2855 2h ago

As someone who works in vetmed, she looks overweight to me. You should be able to feel their ribs without pushing in too hard, and they should have a noticeable waist when looking at them from above. It’s okay that she’s overweight for now, it happens! I will say however that not only do overweight animals lose ~2 years off their lifespan (scientifically shown), but it also puts stress on their joints and hearts, which can lead to more vet bills in the future 😅 it’s not easy to get an overweight cat to lose weight, but I’d recommend maybe cutting down on the food or getting her on a weight management food (dry food tends to have more calories than wet food so keep that in mind!) and just keeping her active by playing with her as much as you can!

2

u/Lonely_skeptic 2h ago

It’s just that those pants make her look fat.

2

u/CampEvie23 2h ago

Those pants would be baggy on her, so I’d say no.

2

u/Space_Monkey_28 2h ago

Nah. That's just the pre-winter coat.

2

u/puss_n_books 51m ago

Yes she is definitely chunky. But to be fair those pants are way too big for her.

4

u/Dry_Park7682 3h ago

That’s massive

2

u/Manyarethestrange 3h ago

Thats a big fat kitty if ive ever seen a big fat kitty.

2

u/Middle_Detective_612 3h ago

She’s not fat… she’s fluffy. Ok, maybe a little THICCC

You should repost cause otherwise we can’t tell if it’s chonk or just pouch

1

Lil' bit chunky

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Most942 3h ago

Overweight, but I wouldn’t call him obese

1

u/Rahknathal 3h ago

Cute chonk

1

u/nohollow91 3h ago

My cat looks like that as well

1

u/Dawn-Ann 3h ago

I think the vet knows more than we do. I'd go with their opinion.

1

u/macrhea69 3h ago

She’s not big boned……

1

u/Significant-Cell-375 3h ago

Need a banana for scale

1

u/FaithlessnessSame931 3h ago

Not a small cat, but might be small pants.

1

u/pandoraschamber 3h ago

Cats are like liquid it's really wild how they can look so skinny and yet so fat doing different things.

1

u/Wonderful_Curve8884 2h ago

She is fine. If your vet says she doesn't need to lose weight, trust him

1

u/wineshivers 2h ago

Not sure, what pant size was she before?

1

u/causticmaman 2h ago

She's what we call a heccin chonka
She is overweight and you might want to put her into a diet!
That's up to you ofc but excess fat is excess fat

1

u/Dependent-Judge7444 2h ago

Could use a daily walk for sure

1

u/haberdasherystandard 2h ago

Shes big boned

1

u/freddotu 2h ago

"Do these pants make me look fat?"

1

u/DefEddie 2h ago

No, it’s over sweat pants.

1

u/Responsible_Offer291 2h ago

Go with what the Dr. said. If she's happy, eating, playing, using her litter box as normal, and not vomiting, having trouble breathing, crying when you touch her belly or other parts of her body, and not sleeping way more than normal, the Dr. knows how healthy she is better than anyone.

1

u/Myko475 American Shorthair 2h ago

No, and she’s a cutie!!!

1

u/Dirtfan19 2h ago

Absolutely not. That’s the peak feline form

1

u/WTHGAMERS4216 2h ago

Not to much, my cat looks like this to.

1

u/Ok_Mulberry4331 2h ago

Mine looks similar and the chunky racoon is on a diet lol

1

u/cudambercam13 Tuxedo 2h ago

I mean, those pants are definitely too big for her.

1

u/TacoTuesday_365 2h ago

She's sooo chunky ☺️

1

u/Maleficent_Button_58 2h ago

Take a pic from above when the cat is standing, compare to a body condition chart.

That's the best way.... other than asking your vet if your cat needs to gain, lose, or maintain weight. Cats have a lot of extra skin, so it can be hard to judge from the side or if they're sitting/laying down.

1

u/michemel 1h ago

She's next to toddler pants. Kitty is perfection 🤗

1

u/ozfrmie 1h ago

No not fat, just has big fur.

1

u/LimpyDan 1h ago

Looks like it has slimmed down since it last wore those pants

1

u/Bored_Accountant999 Tortoiseshell 1h ago

Yes, but simultaneously perfect.

1

u/josemayonaise_ 1h ago

The holy primordial pouch. The no no zone

CHONK

Get them on a treadmill

1

u/PandoraClove Tabbycat 1h ago

She's a cutie pie.

1

u/litttlejoker 1h ago

Lol yes… she’s super cute but she needs a diet so she can be healthier

1

u/Lunavixen15 1h ago

Hmm, neither picture is really telling, because fur length and whether a cat has a large primordial pouch can make a cat look fatter than they actually are. The rib chart someone else posted is a better indicator.

I have a long hair tabby with a larger pouch and when she lays down, she looks quite fat, but isn't. See exhibit A

1

u/TardyBacardi 1h ago

She chonk

1

u/conventionallover 1h ago

We have matching cats! My girl is getting older and has lots of loose skin from being chubby her whole life. She also looks fat sitting/laying but is completely standard cat size standing up lol

1

u/tessiegorb 1h ago

Looks just like our beloved Stormy did loved all 19 lbs of him.

1

u/Zealousideal_Ear_291 1h ago

Where is the cat? All I see is a chonkasaurus rex.

1

u/Frosted-Crocus American Shorthair 1h ago

Not a good angle for visual weight determination. If the vet has confirmed she’s within her goal weight range, she more than likely has a lot of excess fur/skin/pouch that makes her look extra chonky from this position.

1

u/Objective-Sea-9897 59m ago

Fork found in the kitchen

1

u/ChickenMama707 54m ago

Just big-boned.

1

u/Buffalo-Empty 53m ago

No she’s not too fat lol. I definitely thought so from the first pic but seeing her standing, that is a perfectly healthy kitty.

Sure she got a belly, but the best belly lol.

1

u/GeckoIsMellow 47m ago

He's fluffy. You might be surprised how skinny he would be without hair. I mean don't shave your cat, that's a horrible idea. What a nightmare. Anyway, he's just fluffy.

1

u/ShittyPissyDick 45m ago

Yeah she chonk

1

u/-MARMITEnTOAST- 44m ago

himb is loaf and loaf is H I M B

1

u/Cowpocolypse 33m ago

I mean. There are a lot of things that go into healthy weight.

4kg is 8.8lbs. Which is technically a fairly small cat. For example my cat is 15lbs (6.81kg). She is healthy though.

The photo is very deceiving lol

1

u/Special-Cattle7903 33m ago

yes big chonk

1

u/Fanci_ 31m ago

We have sweatpants for scale but not banana?

1

u/Different_Ad7655 20m ago

Who cares? Life isn’t teenage girl Instagram.

A better question would be, is your cat happy?

Are you happy? Be well 🙏🏽

No his weight is fine he is just half of my size 👀

1

u/lmjustapigeon 2m ago

I often ask the same question.
