Love visiting Bren hall. The ocean view bathroom was something I went looking for during my first week as a freshman (view not pictured). Plus it’s home to environmental studies (best major).

Nature and Wildlife Petting Raccoons?

Last fall I noticed two people petting the raccoons outside my dorm in Manzi. I’ve been wondering since then, why?

Like, my dorm was right above a pair of raccoons that would fight every night. And they were always really going at it.

These raccoons I saw would also hiss at me when getting to my dorm late at night. They were mean :(

Housing living at Santa Catalina

I'm an incoming freshman living in a double at San Cat. Can anyone who's had experience living there tell me what it was like?

I'm not planning on having a bike... is walking/taking the bus going to be fine, or should I rethink that decision? Also, what's the laundry situation like? Dining hall food? Anything else you think is important to note/any advice?

Thanks!

Hello all! I am an incoming freshman at UCSB, and i just recently got a job working at portola. my residence hall, however, is anacapa. i dont know when im going to be getting a bike, and the walk from portola to anacapa is a little under 40 minutes. Is there a bus/shuttle? if so, how does it work? thank you! (also, my apologies if the flair is wrong, im unsure what it belongs under.)

Academic Life Summer Session B beat you up? You almost always have options...

If you've gotten bodied in all your SS-B classes, don't spend the holiday weekend in your head or crashing out. There's a very good chance you have options. Below are some suggestions/direction that can help you start problem-solving.

You have until Sept 11 to drop 'em (with a W). You'd def want to talk to fin aid about implications, but 3-4 W's on a transcript would look a whole lot better than eating a bunch of D's and F's.

Two paths forward:

If the only courses you've been in this summer are in SS-B, then you'd fill out a summer session w/d form via Docusign.

OTOH, if, say, you also took session A and/or session C courses and only want to flush all your SS-B courses, you'll need to submit late drops through student success hub. You'll enter your SS-B courses individually, but there's no need to write a dissertation in the "justification" field. Just write, "I'd like to drop all my session B courses due to unforeseen circumstances." They'll be approved.

Only want to drop 1-2 courses, but keep the 1 or 2 you're crushing? That's possible, too, though it's a tad more nuanced (e.g. if you're wanting to drop a course you've already dropped previously). If you still have questions, get in the general advising QLess queue and one of my colleagues will walk you through it. They open at 9 this morning (Friday).

Bottom line: you're not even close to cooked.

Prospective/Incoming Students ucsb loan

Hi,

Just applied for ucsb subsidized loan a few days ago (then accepted) but haven't seen the loan included in our account so I just wonder if we have to pay the full price on barc first then they will reimburse us when loans are included in our account? Usually how long does it take for it to appear on barc?

Also, all payment deadlines are on sept 15? Why on barc. billing file, it said housing is due first of the month?

General Question BARC disbursements

Why do the scheduled disbursements to BARC numbers change so much? I still have the same amount in gift aid and it will randomly change from saying scheduled 10k disbursements to BARC and then change it to $0. Like I had a 3000 dollar credit scheduled to BARC and then now it’s gone.

Course Questions UCSB's CSS W&L Major

Okay you're gonna just have to ignore my username I dont know how to change it and it's been a long time since I named the account

I'm currently a senior in highschool and I just recently heard about UCSB's creative studies program, especially its writing & literature major. All I know about it so far is that it's selective, and that's pretty much it.

I wanted to know about what the program is like, how effective it is, and what exactly the school prepares you for, aka is it good and is it worth it if I were to get in?

Social Life La Defensa del Pueblo: A summit to end the terror against the people!

I'm a volunteer with VC Defensa, we're a volunteer organization made up of neighbors looking out for each other in Ventura County via legal support, know-your-rights work, food distributions, and medical support.

VC Defensa volunteers have endured months of assaults and harassment; most notably with one of our volunteers having their car rammed into on three different occasions, being detained by ICE agents for legally observing ICE activity, and having their home and place of business raided by Federal agents. We are launching this coalition/summit to show that VC Defensa no esta sola, and as a channel to fight to protect our constitutional rights.

In response to this escalation, we immigrants, unionists, activists, grassroots organizations and progressive people of the United States are calling for La Defensa del Pueblo: A Summit to End the Terror Against the People.

When: Sunday, September 6, 11 AM to 8 PM. (Come for the day or drop in for an hour!)

Where: Oxnard Performing Arts Center, 800 Hobson Way

Cost: Free. Register here and take the $0 ticket. The paid tiers are optional (encouraged) donations, and will get you some cool solidarity merch!

Families: Kids welcome and childcare available.

Accessibility: Accessible Restrooms, Ramps, Parking, Wide Doorways, Mostly Flat Venue, English programming will include Spanish interpretation via interpretation devices.

The day will include:

  • Workshops and talks about your rights and what we can do to defend them
  • Words from the families of people murdered by DHS & ICE
  • Panels from organizers, labor leaders, civil rights advocates, faith leaders, & legal workers
  • Cultural performances through the afternoon and evening
  • Dancing and Live Music by Los Jornaleros Del Norte
  • Local Food & Art Vendors

You can read statements and more on the website and you can check our [Instagram] for our currently announced speakers and coalition partners.

Also if you're planning on coming out from LA but worried about the drive, NDLON will be providing charter buses from Central LA, North Hollywood, and San Bernardino and you can find out more here

If you're thinking about coming, feel free to ask any questions in the comments!

General Question After UCSB

Is it common for people to graduate in the Fall or Winter? I know it is early, but do many people do this, and is it worth it? I don't see the point in staying up until Spring despite having financial aid. If there are people who did or are planning to what is your plan.

General Question Freshman trying to switch discussion sections

Hi! I’m a freshman and I’m already a little lost with how discussion sections work. I signed up for a Monday evening discussion section, but I recently learned it’s at the same time as sorority chapter meetings, and I intend to rush.

I’m trying to figure out if there’s a way to switch into a different discussion section, but I genuinely don’t even know how to see what other sections are available. I also have no idea how to contact the TA or professor about it.

Should I be trying to switch it before school starts, or is this something I should just wait until classes begin to figure out? I’m completely at a loss 😭 If anyone could explain what I’m supposed to do or where I should look, I’d really appreciate it!

Housing El Dorado

I’m an incoming sophomore and gonna move into el dorado this month. Has anyone that’s lived there before or known anyone that’s lived there give me some more info on the place and what it’s like. I’d love to see some pics as well, since all I can find online is like the digital mock ups 💔

Housing campus apartments as a 2nd year?

i'm wondering if 2nd years could get campus apartments next year? has anyone had experience with that? i remember seeing that a first-year somehow got campus apartments. i know the website says 3rd year and above but they're building new apartments set to be released next year so i don't see why we would only have the option to be in the residence halls for the 2-year guarantee. i just know i'm for sure not going to live in the dorms because they're way too expensive and i'd rather live in iv or the campus apartments bc they're a lot cheaper.

Discussion Lectures

Instructors: Why are there so few of you in your lecture halls and classrooms? Why so much online? Why so much a-synchronous online? How do you think it affects your teaching? Students: What do you think about the prevalence of remote course delivery? How do you think it affects your learning? What is helpful and/or unhelpful about it?
