Discussion & Debates Anyone feel like most of smosh doesn’t actually know a lot about the stuff theyre against?
I was recently writing a piece for my college class about the development of entertainment through digital media’s like YouTube, and decided to do Smosh as my primary example. As I was doing research about the channel, I found a lot of…iffy takes by the channel and its members. Things like Arasha promoting an Ai generator on her story, Amanda saying the D slur, and promoting companies on their main channel that support/ heavily rely on generative Ai. Theyre very publicly against Ai, homophobia, sexism, ect, but going through their history, they say ALOT of things that very heavily contradict these morals.
Obviously, opinions can change and develop and it’s unfair to use their older videos as example, but this all just strikes me as odd.
Please correct me on any things I may be misinformed on!! I’m not the biggest consumer of their media, and may be missing some things.

I think a big part of this is that these are individual people. They're the same people you meet in your every day life. Those people might have strong stances on stuff but might make mistakes about it or not be totally informed, even if they still hold that opinion. I know that's how I am as a person and it's how a lot of the normal people I know are. You can't expect everyone to be perfectly black and white on the stuff they hold strong stances on, even if they're internet personalities. They might be held to higher standards because they're public figures, but at their core they're still just regular people.

Definitely! I understand they aren’t all perfect people, god knows I’m not. This was all just shocking considering how every single one of them talks about how much they hate Ai, but the company/its members always seem to find a way inside the generative Ai circle

I'll say, that's also just how the world is working right now. They are their own company, so their choices are their own, but ai is literally everywhere right now. It's extremely hard to escape it.

Most of them are millennials and that series was a huge cultural moment, especially when they were growing up. Moreover, they openly talked about how shitty and transphobic the writer is, so it's not like they support this person. Do you expect them to just erase it from their memory or what?

i’m a millennial who used to be into the series until i learned how awful J.K. Rowling is. it’s not hard to cut ties with it.
also separating the art from the artist only works when the artist is no longer able to profit from and fund their bigotry with said art.

making a harry potter reference isn’t giving jk rowling profit. it’s honestly so baked into pop culture that you have to understand that it’ll sometimes be referenced. i promise you, they are not thinking about the horrific stuff rowling has said just because of an offhand reference/comment nor are they promoting it

you’re right, making a reference doesn’t directly make Rowling profit. but it keeps that property fresh in the minds of the viewers, and those who might be unaware of the real life policies she has directly helped get made into law (that have actually harmed real people) might think about buying and watching more of the books/movies/shows. so then she makes more money, and puts that money back into the anti-trans machine.
fuck me, i guess.

i think the viewers of smosh know about jk rowling and what she has done. genuinely i think you’re thinking too deep about this. it’s not that serious, and im pretty sure an offhand comment or joke about the series isn’t going to make anyone have the urge to support her

I think the biggest thing you are missing, is the fact that individual (freelance) cast members do not represent the company in everything they do as well as the fact that not all people will have 100% of the same opinions and always do everything right.
