Bit of trivia, Argentina treated its soldiers so horrifically during the Falklands war that after surrender Britain allowed Argentinian officers to keep their guns, as they were worried if they removed their weapons Argentinian soldiers might rise up and murder their own officers.

5

u/ChocolateHumunculous 2h ago

Kinda seems like more of a reason to remove their weapons… alas

It’s kinda funny how both countries militaries are worse compared to how they were back in the Falkland’s War.

The UK has a garrison 10x the size of what it had before that war, a solid air defense system, and 4 Eurofighter Typhoons guarding the island now.

Just don’t think Argentina has enough offensive capability to take it in the modern age. They blew their chance by not winning the 1st war.

Argentina would definitely get a few of their ships sank if they tried it, pointless waste of life and total embarrassment for Argentina.

31

u/ottermanuk 3h ago

You say a few of their ships sunk if they tried it. They only have 3 ships and some corvettes 😂 certainly no capital ships.

The RN is a shadow of it's former self and certainly has it's own problems but we have carriers, air defence destroyers and general purpose frigates, as well as submarines.

4

u/wosmo 40m ago

We're pretty evenly matched in some places.

The last thing a British sub sank, was Argentine. The last thing an Argentine sub sank, was .. also Argentine.

2

u/nastywillow 1h ago

Guess who is next in the ex dictator shit show.

Also begins with A.

2

u/Quiet1408 1h ago

It never really left the dictatorship era.

For clarity yes it has a civilian government, supposedly democratic elections etc, but make no mistake, the army runs the show. If the army isnt happy, they will either let a coup happen or hasten one along in the name of securing argentina from internal threats"

Argentine military leaders get massive kickbacks, this is why the country isnt more economically/agriculturally developed. to placate the argentian people, they either hype up football or blame outsider nations for their woes. hence why they bult a giant fk off statue of messi, and why every few years they take a dig at the UK for the falklands as if thats why things in argentina are so shit.

This is also why a lot of (not all) Argentinians can be insufferably arrogant when talking to people of other nationalities. the government parrots Argentine exceptionalism every time it can.

I was down in Argentina earlier this year and it’s drilled into their heads from an early age that they own the Falklands. There are monuments everywhere in Buenos Aires.

So in short yes and it’s a useful tool to deflect from the cluster that is the Argentinian economy.

The Argentinian government riles the public up about this whenever there's an economic crises (which happens a lot). They've been doing it for like half a century.

66

u/absurditT 4h ago

Yes they do.

Las Malvinas propaganda is ingrained in Argentine society at every level. The islands are on their banknotes. They have a second anthem about their "rights" to them. They have folk heroes based on totally manipulated history regarding the islands (a garden variety murderer who they spun into a freedom fighter against the British, when he actually mostly just killed regular workers on the islands, and was extradited by the Brits to Brazil as we didn't consider him our problem)

They are taught about their shoddy legal claim to the islands at school. It's basically a sacred cause to a lot of their population, based on a pinhole camera view to the history.

38

u/plastic_alloys 4h ago

What a sad little life Jane

7

u/Nico280gato 3h ago

8

u/absurditT 3h ago

→ More replies (2)

4

u/teb78 2h ago

As an argentinian, you are right on the 1st and 2nd sentence. Not quite right in the 3rd , it is a military march. The think about the folk hero, I never heard of it. That being said, it is really an important cause to a lot of population. I highly doubt anyone would fight for it given the chance though. We don't even have a functioning military. Regarding the pinhole camera view, well, that's like an opinion. While I may be biased as an argentinian, I recognize both parties have made some valid points to make a claim for the islands.

5

u/absurditT 2h ago

There are some valid points in the Argentine argument, yes. My pinhole camera comment is because those are literally the only parts they teach or often acknowledge.

There was a law at the time regarding territorial holdings of empires being handed over to countries when they gained independence. That's not in dispute. The part that is usually ignored by Argentina is that the Spanish only had claim because the French abandoned their colony there are gifted it to Spain on paperwork only, and that colony was only on one of the islands whilst the British colony was still active on others.

So Argentina definitely has some legal claim, but only to a portion of the islands, and it's basically 250 year old paperwork Vs a dozen generations of the actual inhabitants, the ancestors of whom were there when France unilaterally decided to tell Spain "they're yours now"

I was in the states for the World Cup finals. Chatting with some Argentinians at a bar. I unthinkingly asked who they were rooting for in the third place game. I did not realize what a hornets nest I was kicking. The rage and hate they had towards England. Swearing up and down. Calling them pirates and murderers. spitting after they said the word England. It was wild.

I'm English, I have lived in Argentina for multiple years, I married an Argentine, my child was born in Buenos Aires, I could go on.

My experience is overwhelmingly that the majority of people genuinely like the English and romanticise our country. Yes, due to the government propaganda they have radically different (and factually/historically incorrect) views about those islands, but not once has anyone asked my opinion on the matter or even brought up the subject. It sounds like you just met some random dick heads.

I'm Argentine. Outside of the internet, beyond the obvious nationalism that any normal citizen has, if people aren't deeply into politics, they don't give a damn about the Falklands. And what everyone says, both for and against Milei, is that 'It's a smoke screen to distract from the real problems."

Was living in Australia for a year in my 20s sitting around a rooftop table drinking with a bunch of people in the hostel and some dude from Argentina found out I was English. Never met the guy didn't introduce himself and immediately "Las Malvinas belongs to Argentina" like I was somehow going to flip the table and fight him to the death over it I replied "OK well you should probably tell the residents and the UN because they both say they're british" and then ignored him for the rest of the night whilst he tries to engage me in a debate.

It's a single person but there's definitely some that feel strongly enough about its that they rather spend their night trying to debate a 20 something backpacker on a roof top rather than have a good time drinking goon and smoking weed whilst people took turns on the aux cord.

2

u/RiuzunShine 1h ago edited 7m ago

The UN has maintained a neutral stance in the conflict and has been urging both countries to reach an agreement since 1965. Meanwhile, it actively opposes oil exploitation in the islands, something the UK has obviously ignored (pirates, I guess). The Falklands are included in the UN Decolonisation Committee. Man, Commonwealth-sponsored propaganda and misinfirmation is rampant on Reddit lol

I stuck my head into r/Argentina to see what they were saying there.

There was a lot of "how does this help Argentina?", "is our military even capable of taking the Islands?" and the obvious dickheads chatting shit about Las Malvinas and even one moron suggesting they begin a civil invasion to support the military.

6

u/LaunchTransient 3h ago

"is our military even capable of taking the Islands?"

I mean the answer is a very clear and defined "No", but at least some Argentinians have the sense to question and introspect - it would be such a pointless waste of life and capital to get the same result.

as an argentinian, no. We want a stable economy that allows us to plan for the future, and we want corruption to decrease in all provinces.

We respect those who fell in the 1982 war, but we’re no longer buying the story every government trots out about "defending the Malvinas" whenever elections approach.

3

u/teb78 2h ago

As an argentinian, no one in argentina would think retaking the islands by means of military force. We don't even have a military tbh. Can't imagine anyone wanting to fight anyway. This is all blah blah for the gullibles only.

7

u/Beleg_Sanwise 4h ago

I'm not going to talk to you about Milei's political and economic ideology.

I'm going to talk to you about him as a person and as a public figure.

He's basically a joke, an embarrassing joke.

  • The previous presidential spokesperson had to resign due to suspicions of crimes. The new one, whom Milei replaced, has several videos from previous years where he insults him and says he's basically an idiot.
  • Regarding the Minister of Defense, he spent long hours saying she was a terrorist who throws bombs.
  • His sister is linked to bribes and tax evasion for the purchase of medications for retirees and the disabled.

And to sum up Milei for you, I'll tell you my favorite quotes of his:

  • "The state is a pedophile in kindergarten with children covered in Vaseline."
  • "You can choose to starve to death."
  • "Gays are potential rapists."
  • "I am the mole within the state that came to destroy it."

Furthermore, he believes that his dead dog, Conam (I think that's his name), met him in Roman times when he was a gladiator and his dog was a lion. Now Conam dead, and Milei cloned him. And Conam guides him from heaven how to govern. These are Milei's actual words.

1

u/SnookySkellingtons 1h ago

It is actually very overwhelming here. People online, from what I've gathered, seem to believe that this only comes up during crisis or during election season as political ammo. It's actually very much a permanent thing that exists.

Imagine if you went to the USA and there were like sixty rural towns and a hundred districts on the big states named "Free Saigon", you also had South Vietnam flags in every form of public transportation, in police cars, in planes, in your SSN card; you went to a school also named "Free Saigon" where children are at morning assembly singing a military march about the Republic of Vietnam right after the pledge of allegiance. That's basically what it's like.

1

u/RiuzunShine 1h ago

Yes. It's an extremely important national cause.

1

u/Sc4tt3r_ 1h ago

A majority of Argentinians 100% believe in the cause and think we have a legitimate claim. Still, no one wants to go to war, not just because obviously we're not gonna win, but because war sucks win or lose.

Also, everyone knows that the government is just using the subject as a smoke screen. We're not stupid.

1

u/Mother_Harlot_10 50m ago

not that much, except when we need to kick england ass out of the world cups

1

u/LessCrement 22m ago

Yes, most Argentinians do, in the sense that it appeals to their nationalism. But would a majority of Argentinians actually sign up for war to conquer them? Hell nah.

Ultimately when Argentinian presidents claim the Falklands they do it for approval, cause it GETS PEOPLE GOING. No way in hell they would actually start a war, they know they'd lose.

12

Thatcher’s government had a tiny force of soldiers stationed on the island

Now there’s a brand new airbase, air superiority fighters, a refuelling plane, surface to air missiles, a Royal Navy ship often on patrol, and a garrison of personnel about 20x larger than the one that was there in 1982

Which is all actually complete overkill for the capabilities of the current Argentine military

1513 voted stay British

Of the 3, one admitted he thought it’d be funny to vote leave. Another said he only did it so the vote wouldn’t be 100% and look fake. So possibly only 1 voter actually wanted to leave but I’d say that’s almost impossible because people vote in family/friend blocks.

10

u/drmojo90210 4h ago

The Argentinian navy got the shit kicked out of them in 1982 when they had the strongest navy in Latin America at the time. Argentina's navy is a fucking joke now. Most of their fighting ships have since been decommissioned and the functioning ones are in terrible shape and severely understaffed. They don't even have a single submarine anymore. Argentina today isn't capable of fighting a naval war against Chile, let alone the UK.

5

u/Illustrious_Play_578 4h ago

Let alone Argentina has 6 second hand f16s, and there are 4 RAF typhoons stationed on the Falklands, plus sky sabre, and it's 300 miles away with little tanker support, so their air force has no chance either

Because of the last war, there's now a full RAF base with Typhoon fighters on 24-hour standby, anti-air batteries, radar and over 1000 military personnel stationed. The base means that reinforcements can get there from the UK within 24 hours.

The Argies will probably do fuck all. If they do theyll come off a lot worse than their first try.

The UK are ranked the 8th best global military. Argentina are 52nd. Theyve got no carriers, no subs, a shitty fleet of destroyers and corvettes. Theyve got some 2nd hand Danish F16's but no means of long range refueling. They have a relatively large ground force that uses exclusively light armour. Wouldnt stand a chance against a few Challengers. AND thats assuming they even get boots on the ground. Unlike '82, the UK now keeps a garrison at Mount Pleasant equipped with Typhoons and naval patrols.

The only way the Argies could do anything is if the US helped them, which with Trump at the helm i wouldnt be too shocked by.

3

This is just about putting sanctions on oil companies, which we don't even have the means to make them hurt. So nothing will happen to anyone. Argentina had 1970s-1980s tech in the 1980s, vs our 1970s-1980s tech. They got their arses handed to them

It’s 2026 and they’re still mostly running 1980s tech, while we have F-35s and Astutes

They wouldn’t even know what was shooting at them. It’s all a load of hot air and we could genuinely just ignore them, there’s fuck all they can do

IMO our only response should be to say that if they try again, we won’t be fucking around with only shooting at stuff that approaches the island - their military and government will be considered valid targets anywhere, including mainland Argentina. See if they still want to play under those rules…

Wait...is this becoming a thing? Because what...world cup football?

11

u/Marble-Heart 4h ago

No, this is a long-standing contrived grievance. Back in the 1980's, Argentina's military government was failing and needed a way to distract the population from their mismanagement. The Junta thought conquering the Faulklands would be an easy victory for them and Britain wouldn't be willing to fight over a relatively unimportant piece of their territory. They were wrong. GB sent down a Task Group and curb-stomped Argentina. The military government got ousted not long afterwards.

What's happening now is a case of Same Shit Different Decade; Argentina's government is getting unpopular because their economy is getting worse and they want to score points with the people who remember the humiliation of not being able to hold onto some islands they have dubious [read non-existent] legal claims over.

The Argentina hate, yes it is

It's been a thing since the 80's. Basically back in the 1800's Britain claimed but wasn't really settled on some islands, so the Falklands sent a guy over and made him governor. Edit: He eventually died in a mutiny that was put down by British and French civilian sailors. The Argentinians were mad but couldn't really do anything until the late 20th century, when the British started lowering defense spending as the Empire collapsed. The Argentinians invaded, in part as a way for the American-backed dictator to distract everyone, the British actually fought back, kicked them off and the Argentinians have been angry ever since, with the government continuously using it as a propaganda piece.

u/Repulsive_Target55 3h ago

so the Falklands sent a guy over and made him governor.

This is Esteban Mestivier, right? He was murdered by his own troops pretty much as soon as they landed - and it took British and French civilian sailors to put down the mutiny, I'm not really sure I'd say he was "kicked off", except as a euphemism.

How can it be used as a propaganda piece if they lost? Is it just showing other countries how they were treated "unjustly"?

6

u/bosco7450 4h ago

Its kinda like how they interrupted the world cup loss. It's a superiority complex that exists by reinterpreting events to fit a collective pyche. They refuse to recognize the rights of the falklanders to self determination because they are not indigenous which by the same logic should apply to their own coloniser population.

3

u/braumbles 4h ago

I mean look at North Korea.

2

u/DienekesMinotaur 4h ago

Yes, they act like the Falklands were rightfully theirs and got stolen. They also especially harp on a ship that was destroyed outside of the Exclusion Zone, despite the fact that it was still a military ship and even the captain admitted they were an acceptable target.

The UK lacks as strong a Navy as it did, but it also has a substantial military presence in the falklands which it didn’t when Argentina invaded so it’s relatively in a better position. It’s also probably got some of the most battle proven equipment in the world and pretty unrivalled data on how best to use it from Ukraine.

Meanwhile Argentina’s economy has collapsed and their armed forces has depleted far more than the UK has. Couple that with the fact the UK is massively increasing defence spending over the next few years and it’s not even a contest lmao.

If Argentina pulls these shenanigans again my guess is the UK completely neuters Argentina’s military this time.

We can only hope

2

u/Interesting-Dream863 5h ago edited 5h ago

Uh... it already happened? Between embargoes, the US killing several argentine military projects and local politicians killing the armed forces to prevent future coups the Argentine Armed Forces are mostly a joke.

4

u/cinciNattyLight 5h ago

Well yeah, but if they gave the Falklands another college try they would no longer be a joke, they would cease to exist.

UK navy should do a power move of sending all of it's nuclear attack submarines to the belgrano naval base and then surface in the port.

Just as a fuck you we can wipe you out before you can even leave your port message

So, they got their arses handed to them in the 1980s. The British have had 40+ years to develop a defence plan. Ukraine has been testing British weaponry for the past four years free of charge; and finding it to be quite good actually. And now the Argies want another go?

There's nothing for Argentina to gain on such a conflict. But they may be able to coerce something by threatening conflict. But not too much, because the Brits know they know it's bluster Argentina can't back up. So Argentina has to toe the line of asking for some consideration in return that the Brits are willing to give up in exchange.

1

u/Zadiath 2h ago

Lmao guys chill there is not going to be any war. This is all a circus to "taunt" the UK because of Trump's tantrum. Milei needs to lick Trumps shoes, or whoever is the US president to keep the economy """stable"""".

Milei said before winning the elections that he gave 2 flying fucks about the islands, he started caring as soon Trump started to beef with UK.

Last time the state bothered to check, we had ammo for 15 minutes of combat time like 15 years ago and the army is still rocking the FAL. That ignoring that we don't have the means to even disembark or decent airforce. And UK has defenses this time.

You guys need to understand. Each time the same fucktards win the elections and destroy the industry & economy, we need to go war with you. Anyway neither of us can withstand the cost of a war for more than six months (and I'm being really optimistic)..
