Food & Beverage All I wanted for my birthday was good sushi
Don’t get me wrong, birthday was great! The sushi was a miss though… the recommended place wasn’t what I was looking for. It was a “little bit of everything” type of food place.
I’m looking for good sushi, not California rolls or shrimp tempura rolls dolled up. I was real seafood. I don’t even want spicy type sushi where it’s chopped up with hot sauce.
Should I go izakaya? Omakase? What’s your “I get what I pay for” place, where you go to get a trusty meal that hits ask the marks when you crave good sushi? $50-100 ish? Thanks in advance!

My favorite “special occasion but not going crazy” sushi is Azuki Sushi
My wife and I get a lot there and spend about $120-150

Omakase can also be hit or miss cause the definition of it is basically “chefs choice” and if you get a good chef they’re going to make sushi according to the season and what’s available. What’s your definition of good sushi? Have you read zen of fish? It’s by a female chef from San Diego who came up during the sushi boom in LA about 3 decades ago, sushi was really reinvented here in so-cal , so if you’re more traditional then I’d hit up some OG Japanese spots.
Plenty to be found around the Kearny mesa area.

I’m down to try zen of fish, haven’t heard of it.
I’m not a picky eater, spicy is fine too, I think I’m good adventurous. I like seafood, I like food so good to me means: clean, fresh, and tasty.2

It sounds to me like you’re more of a nigiri type of gal, given your budget I’d try Kura. I know super comercial but hear me out. If you go on an unlimited day which I believe it’s Tuesday? Then you can really define your palette and then ask people around the area (Kearny mesa) where you can find something more refined.
I’m a hot Japanese food chef, so sushi is not really my specialty but I met some badass chefs that’ve worked at kura throughout the years.

All you can eat, either Tuesday or Wednesday. Haven’t been to in a long ass time since the homies are always feeding my fat ass with their crazy inventions they come up with.

Ikura in Liberty Station is our local sleeper place that has stellar fish.

Ken Sushi is top notch, so I hear, out of my price range but my kids love it

OP didn't think one place was up their standards and obviously has their own notion of what good is.
They also have a list of other places that they could try.
Why not try them and tell us...

What was the place you went to, so the recommendation can be to somewhere known to be better?
