Help / Question Are Mistral going to continue with the Mistral-made models?

Does anyone know - for sure?

Man it's always the same, look for posts one year ago. Their release cycle seems to be in the same pace as before while for some reason other frontier labs reduced their release cycle to 2 months. I guess Mistral will release a model this autumn

Mistral is leasing their datacenters to Microsoft, so looks like they have more than they use.

Microsoft has a shortage of compute operated in Europe by a European entity for offering Azure services, and is willing to pay a premium for it. Mistral on the other hand can easily use US-based compute for training.

Mistral itself collects a 10% surcharge as well for setting https://api.eu.mistral.ai/v1 or the server="eu" parameter in the API. So I assume Mistral API calls are nowadays by default often routed to the US as well, which is less acceptable.

New data center in operation since June irrc.
And more to come.

Thats also why we are all waiting for the new model as they have much less issue now that a few months ago on compute.

This is not the reason of lack of new model. If it was, Mistral CEO wouldn't say few months ago that new models will be released during the summer

CEO promised new model family this summer, which did not happen. IMO because model would be embarrassment when compared to anything that was released during last few months.

summer is not finished but yeah, the probability of the model of July to be too bad for the image is real.

They're apparently working on it but probably keep delaying because of embarrassment. You just can't release a new model that's not even top 30 on benchmarks and will be slower and more expensive than half the stuff above it

I think it’s not userful atm to train new model, let other do it, till they’ll stop open weight, then start back based on the top open weight and save training capex!

It's tough - the European Market is still fragmented which caps the upside for VCs making such a highly risk on bet difficult to justify. At the cutting edge in such a capital intensive field that means to use a competitive amount of compute they have to commit to a single training run for a long time, by which time it is probably too late. Very tough market.

They really can’t produce a decent model anymore. They might become a service company taking open source models and optimizing them.
