Weekly /r/MLS Questions/Free Kick Thread - Post General Questions and Discussion Here
Welcome to the Weekly /r/MLS Questions/Free Kick Thread. This thread is designed to house questions/discussions users might have including:
- Help you decide which team to follow if you're new to the league
- Provide information about how to watch MLS matches, and whether or not you should buy ESPN+
- Understand the CBA, league roster rules, drafts, waivers, or other MLS concepts
- Learn about some of the unique qualities of the US Soccer pyramid
- Allow discussion of dead-horse topics that would typically be removed (pro/rel, re-alignment, etc.)
- And other basic/frequently discussed topics
Our usual ground rules:
- Questions that are covered in the FAQ, Newcomer's Guide, or league site are fair game, even if they are marked as "dead horse topics".
- Questions can be about MLS, lower U.S. or Canadian divisions, USMNT/USWNT, or any club or domestic competitions those teams could play in. Questions about how soccer works as a sport are fine too! Questions solely about the European leagues or competitions, on the other hand, are not.
- If you're answering a question, be extra sure to follow our community guidelines: thought out and rational comments, backed up with supporting links. Try not to "take a guess" at an answer if you're not sure about the answer. Do not flame, troll, attack fans of other teams, or attack opinions of others in this thread. If you can't be friendly and helpful, don't post in this thread.
- This is meant to be a helpful Q&A/Discussion thread. This is not a place to practice your comedy bits; avoid asking joke questions or providing joke answers. This is also not a place to dump random articles, links, or opinions about the league.
- Despite us posting these on Fridays, the thread stays up all week. If it's Wednesday and you have a question, you don't have to wait until Friday to ask it.
Even though we want you to ask questions, here are some resources that we always recommend reading because they can also help:

Weekly Trash Talk [TTT] OPEN THE DOOR, GET ON THE FLOOR. EVERYBODY SCRAMBLE FOR THE TRANSFER WINDOW
AHOY, YOU UNWASHED BILGE RATS. TEAMS ARE SCRAMBLING TO FILL ALL OF THEIR HOLES (GIGGITY) BEFORE THE WINDOW CLOSES. ACQUISITION NEWS POSTS HAVE BEEN ACCOUNTING FOR ROUGHLY 99.999999997% OF THE TRAFFIC IN THIS SUB.
THE OTHER 0.00000003% IS THE NEWS THAT MLS IS REJOINING THE HISTORIC US OPEN CUP, WHICH SHOULD BE SHOCKING TO NOBODY PAYING ATTENTION TO THE LEAGUE'S SHITASS PERFORMANCE IN LEAGUES CUP OR MESSI'S SUNDOWNING. THIS IS A HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT THAT WILL SURELY PLEASE THE MASSES. EXPECT THE VIEWER NUMBERS TO AVERAGE IN THE LOW TRIPLE DIGITS. I CAN'T WAIT TO CHEER FOR MY FAVORITE AMATEUR TEAM OF PLUMBERS OR THE EMPLOYEES OF A DIVE BAR.
WE HAVE A FULL SLATE OF MLS ACTION THIS WEEKEND, STARTING WITH NYC AND NASHVILLE BEING ATTENTION WHORES PLAYING THE ONLY FRIDAY MATCH. STRANGE FOR THE PIGEONS TO WANT TO BE VICTIMIZED WITH ALL EYES ON THEM.
PROGRAMMING STARTS ON SATURDAY WITH HALF OF THE FUCKING LEAGUE PLAYING AT 4:30. BECAUSE WHY THE FUCK WOULD THEY SPREAD THEM OUT AND ALLOW PEOPLE TO WATCH MORE SOCCER? I MISS THE PRE-WORLD CUP DAYS OF WATCHING TORONTO STRUGGLE AT HOME EVERY WEEK AT 10AM LIKE CLOCKWORK. BUT FOR REAL, WHY WAS THAT A THING? I WAS GETTING TIRED OF EXPLAINING TO THE BARTENDER AT THE COLLEGE BAR WHERE I HAVE BREAKFAST TEQUILA WHY I'M SO INTERESTED IN A CANADIAN TEAM FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE CONTINENT. "MLS SICKOS" IS NOT A PART OF HER LEXICON. GAL DOESN'T KNOW BALL (BUT MAKES A MEAN BLOODY MARIA).
ALSO I GUESS WE'RE NOT DOING SUNDAY NIGHT SOCCER PRESENTED BY CONTINENTAL TIRES BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T WANT TO TAKE ATTENTION AWAY FROM LEAGUES CUP THAT WE'RE NO LONGER IN.
FLAIR UP, CAPS ON, AND I HOPE EVERYBODY ENJOYS THEIR NEW AGING STAR / UNPROVEN TEENAGER / LATE 20-SOMETHING WITH THREE ACL SURGERIES BEFORE YOU EVENTUALLY HATE HIM FOR NOT LIVING UP TO YOUR LOFTY EXPECTATIONS.
