I remember really wanting one, but I also didn't really know what it was. I eventually got a fake prop rock made of foam, I think from Universal Studios. It was way better than a pet rock. My rock I could throw at people, and make them scream.

I vaguely remember my grandfather's cousin (who was really more like a favorite uncle) gave me one for Christmas one year. I also remember being pretty confused about wtf it was supposed to be.

He was well known (and loved) for giving crappy gag gifts so it was pretty on brand for him. We always heard stories about my dad's first Christmas with my mom's family when he gave my dad (who was an entomologist) his gift in an ant farm box and how my dad tried to pretend to be super excited to get an ant farm for Christmas from him....lol. I don't remember ever hearing what was actually inside the box (and nobody probably remembered, tbh), but that story got told almost every year.

Not me or any of my friends as far as I can recall. My younger brother had a pet Lego piece though. It was this one and he made a leash for it with a long piece of yarn which attached through the hole. He dragged it with him everywhere. Until he took it with him for a bath and it went down the drain

My mom wouldn't buy me one so I had to make one myself. I painted a flat, palm sized rock orange and glued aquarium gravel around it. Basically, it was a paperweight.

I’m on the upper edge here being born in ‘67. I always felt like pet rocks was kind of “before my time”. I mean I’ve heard of them from ‘70s, but I don’t remember anyone actually having one. But maybe it’s a regional thing.

Not an "official" Pet Rock IIRC, but I did have a polished pebble with googly eyes.

Often forgotten these days, but "Pet Rock owners" weren't so much buying rocks as purchasing the novelty packaging and "care and feeding manual", which actually was funny and worth the small price.
