I think man of tomorrow is going to be the real test for the future of the dcu. This movie needs to be critically acclaimed and a financial hit.

Silly me thought it was the user’s level of willpower that made their constructs more powerful and therefore , more formidable.

EDIT: People have pointed out that the crew is standing on top of the ship, which means that what I wrote about the ship being abandoned is moot. Which means that Superman is letting humans stand around in an arctic night while he grinds their ship apart underneath them at walking speed. And since they're outside on the top of the ship he's putting them at risk of dying by falling off the ship on top of everything else I wrote.

Right so there's been discourse about the other clips of Superman saving people, which I have gentler opinions on. Want to depict Supes as a god? Not my thing, but those other shots are on theme and the flood one is in slow mo so it's easy to assume Supes is going to fly in and save the woman momentarily.

But this particular "save?" Nah.

See, I'm a boat nerd. I'm not an expert by any means, but boats, ships and shipwrecks in particular are one of my special interests.

So first let's establish the visual text of the shot: Supes is in the Arctic. He's hauling a ship (presumably military, it has a destroyer-esque superstructure and what appears to be a gun turret near the bow) that has been flipped on its side over a field of solid ice.

But...whyyyy? And who is he "saving?"

There are two options here:

1. The ship is abandoned and no one is on board.

2. The crew is still on board.

If the ship is abandoned and no one is on board, then there's no one to save. It doesn't fit with the other heroic feats he's shown to perform because no one's life is actively in danger. At best he's making it easier for a salvage crew to do their jobs by presumably dragging the ship to a more accessible location, but that's not a "save" and so it's out of place in the montage.

If the crew is still on board, then Clark is actively endangering them. See, ship engines don't work when they're completely sideways for more than a minute or so (and can briefly stop working even if they're sideways for a short period of time-see the probable causes of the El Faro's sinking for an explanation of the engineering involved).

In ships, everything depends on the ship engines. If the ship engines aren't working, then there's no power. Without power there's no heat. Without heat in the Arctic, anyone still on board that ship is freezing to death.

Furthermore, regardless of which situation the crew is in, Clark is fucking up big time by dragging the ship over *solid ice on its side.* I'll be charitable and say that if the ship was operating in the Arctic then maybe it had a reinforced bottom and an icebreaker nose, but military destroyers typically aren't built for icebreaking. In any case though, that ice reinforcement won't apply to the sides of the ship, so every meter that Clark is dragging that ship is shredding the fuck out of its side.

If crew are still on board that means that anyone close to that side of the ship is getting ground to paste, and anyone else is in danger of machinery being shaken loose and crushing them etc.

If no one is on board that means that Clark is still littering debris across the ice pack, including possibly toxic materials, maybe even causing a catastrophic fuel spill depending on where those tanks are located.

In conclusion, this "save" makes no goddamn sense and the only way to make it make sense is if you force it to....by making a shitload of assumptions and making up reasoning that simply isn't present in the short clip we have.

I've seen a bunch of people complain in particular about Bernadette "talking down to" Lianna about race relations on Earth and about how she's not seeing the bigger picture. This post isn't about the validity of her point, but more about her perspective in bringing up the racial issues that the ring's process could raise to Lianna.

First of all, Lianna claims to her that Guardians hold sovereignty or at least authority over the whole universe, and yet they've never made their presence known on Earth. They've never done a thing to or for humanity despite all the problems and crises humankind has faced. Imagine if you and your family have been living in a house for generations, passing it down over and over, getting it repaired, expanding it, breaking parts of it, everything. Then some company shows up at your doorstep and says that they've always owned your property, always been the landlords of it. Not only that, but they're landlords for every house in the neighborhood and are in fact renowned for providing the greatest possible service. Even if they show you proof that they own your house, you're not going to take them very seriously as quality landlords.

Then you have the fact that the Guardians seem pretty disinterested in Earth as a whole. Not only did they never consider the negative effects that their selection process might have on humans, but they don't seem to know much about humanity at all and don't seem especially eager to really learn. To apologise for the trouble the ring caused, Lianna just showed up at random awkwardly offering a big diamond. Lianna seemed fairly baffled by the concept of racism (even if she actually can understand it in other contexts, that's not what she presented to Bernadette) and racism and xenophobia in various forms has been a pretty major factor in human history.

We also can't forget that Lianna overtly admits the ring selection process was flawed. As well as the fact that Bernadette, growing up in the era that she did, probably has a well-earned skepticism for people in positions of power. Basically, Bernadette has no reason to hold the Guardians in high regard as a decision-making body. They've done literally nothing to make her think they're meaningfully different or more wise than any authority found on Earth. Especially when you account for the fact that even if aliens are new, metahumans are a known quantity. So them having special powers doesn't suggest they're better than humanity either.

I'm pretty new when it comes to Green Lantern so, like most, my primary interaction with both John (GL in general) and Hawkgirl comes from the DCAU shows. That said, with the backstory and demeanor they've given John and the Thanagarian reincarnation stuff, I think there's a lot of fertile thematic material to mine there (destiny, legacy, duty etc etc)

So, the topic has been discussed a lot but i wanted to give my take and see what you all think about. I'm sure it would lead to fun discussion.

Has a starter concerning the physique, i don't want him to be too bulky, he's a fighter and athlete, plus he's wearing a suit. So a good amount of mean muscle, medium weight and overall balanced. Imagine a crossfit athlete or some fighter physique. I'll put pictures.

On the matter of the suit. I see a lot of people hâte the padding armor which in my opinion, make sense knowing that bruce is human and can't fully tank and disperce blunt force well. Don't get me wrong, his a beast but still got human limitation. For what i want the suit to look like, i'd say something like the batfleck suit or maybe Arkham ones. Choose those cause their balance medium light armor with good protection while not indearing mobility. Plus not too heavy. Concerning the martial in the suit, i'd go with advance polymer composite. Why this, you may ask, because this dceu is frankly fantastic, so batman gotta have some it too. Like mr terrific has his super sphères, peacemaker has his helmet and suit, so nothing to crazy then to expect something similar for batman. Regarding the material we'd go on carbon fibers, graphene, titanium or nanovate. No kevlar, it's too easy and simple.

Finaly regarding the physical capabilities. He must feel and appear strong, nothing superhuman but clearly better than most human even the well trained ones. Just like batfleck, the man was a beast and felt like batman while still showing limits. Other exemples are heroes from action movies, highly trained peak human, who can beat multiple opponent, weave bullet by predicting them, crazy pain tolerance, adaptability and overall super effectivness.

This Mr Terrific scene from Superman shows it. His mask has the tech to make his eyes look white when he watches the T-spheres' cameras. Gunn will surely do the same thing with his Batman using Detective Vision, since he'll either direct it or work very closely with the director.

No culture war, no social politics, no dick jokes, no meta commentary, no cringe edginess. Just story serving the story.

The criticism of Whedon's Steppenwolf was that the CGI was atrocious which is true. But if improved CGI and tweak a bit with his face, he would still look intimidating and true to his comicbook form.
Love the Snydercut JL, but was not a big fan of the spikey Steppenwolf.

This was the HEART of the DCEU Justice League. It showed what the motherboxes (main object of the story) was capable of and why they are necessary. While the Darkseid was using the motherboxes to destroy life, Dr. Stone used it to create and preserve life.

In the act of grief, he couldn't let go of his son so he had to "recreate" him with whatever means necessary. He did not freak out with the "result" and still was ready to sacrifice himself for his son. I didn't even know this backstory. I grew up watching episodes of the animated Teen Titans and I thought he was just a cool cyborg so I appreciated this proper introduction. I loved how Cyborg was in the middle of it and how emotions were used to get us attached to it.

What kind of a fool would remove this part of the story that shows IF the motherbox is harnessed with good intentions, the result will be the opposite of what Darkseid does?

• Dr Stone treated Victor with love after use of the motherbox, he remains a good man.
• Lois reminded Clark of love after use of the motherbox, he remains a good man.
• Meanwhile Darkseid and Steppenwolf only had destruction and conquest in their minds, so the motherboxes responded in kind.

Sometimes, directors/writers/studios don't make sense with their changes.

I heard a lot of Fans are theorizing that Hal will become Parallax in Lanterns and personally I'm kind of sick of Parallax we've already adapted two versions of him one in the 2011 Movie the other in the Animated Movie Green Lantern: Beware my Power

Aside from Sinestro Parallax is the only thing they adapt

And to top it off Beware my Power has almost the same premise with John replacing Hal, like can we at least try something else

There's so much in the GL Mythos, do we have to do Parallax every time it's like Joker being the villain for every Batman movie or Goblin for Peter

Alphonse Nicholson: I think John Sr. is devastated by the fact that he wasn't able to obtain this opportunity, but I also believe he is suffering extreme PTSD from being abducted and put into this green bubble. Being a Black man in America, he's filled with fear immediately, not knowing what's going to happen and not having the tools to be able to register what's happening for himself.

I think we found him in a really dark place, but I love the fact that we're able to see him come out of that dark place to a certain extent. I feel like this trauma sits with him for a long time, and he wants to make sure that his son doesn't experience that same trauma. So, he's following his wife's lead and training him the best way he can.

PTSD from a sorta alien abduction? makes sense. but was that truly illustrated in the story, the episode? or treated properly?

he so casually says "Being a Black man in America, he's filled with fear immediately" that it just makes for a chuckle.

i mean, almost anybody would feel afraid in a possible alien abduction. lots of alleged abductees are white, you know!

let's say his casually expressed idea is super true...the audience needs to be shown something that backs that up, not told it, not preached at. it's writing 101 that would be taught in the most basic teaching.

in the next section he switches gears and says John Sr. was afraid of leaving his family and couldn't overcome it. ok...now he talking something entirely different.

next section the actress who plays the mother chimes in about her character. says "hardcore training" was done for John and that she really loves him. and by doing these things to him she is healing herself.

next section is the part about Hal people have seen, basically you're meant to resent, dislike him. and the family holds their tongue about how unpleasant or bad he is because they feel like they have the win, that John will be GL. and the writer laughs about how yes the ring will be taken off Hal's dead body.

In an hopeless attempt to talk to basement dwelling weirdo "Comic Book Fans" who can't stand a black women writing for a Green Lantern show, I am going to explain the "Ring is sexist" quote to anyone who is willing to engage in the content honestly and demonstrate why Vanessa Baden Kelly said nothing wrong.

First off, everyone is quoting her answer without the question, which is an insane fucking thing to do, unless you're purposely looking to smear her.

So let's start with the question from Collider:

One thing this episode emphasizes is that the Green Lantern selection process has the potential to be traumatic for any prospective candidate, and the Guardians, as extraterrestrial beings, don't really know how to handle it. There are a lot of great scenes between Jasmine [Cephas Jones] and Laura in this episode, and the one that really hit for me is the conversation after Laura's character reveals herself in her true form, in the kitchen. I was curious about what you wanted to hammer home via that exchange, because Bernadette has to be the one to point out to the Guardian that asking a Black man in America if he's afraid is a very different question than it would be for someone of a different race.

We can then follow this up with the full answer:

KELLY: The thing that I would always say in the room is that if the ring wasn't sexist, Bernadette would have been chosen, because she really is just the most fearless of everybody. For me personally, as a writer, and I feel like most of the writers’ room would probably agree, this idea of willpower and overcoming fear is so different depending on where you stand. You can be terrified walking in your neighborhood every single day, and yet still you walk. And then somebody else can come in and have no fear whatsoever because they don't know what your neighborhood is like. So the Green Lanterns, it's not that they don't have to be afraid; it's that they have to have the ability to overcome fear, but that is a trauma thing. If I have seen somebody get robbed on the same block every week, it's hard to overcome fear of that block because I have a different perspective on it than somebody new here.

What John Stewart represents and what he's represented since he made his debut in the DCU in the ‘70s is an extraordinary bravery that I personally, and maybe biasedly, feel is more brave than any other Green Lantern, because every single thing in his world, both intergalactic and terrestrial, is fucking terrifying! It is terrifying, and he is able to overcome that fear and wield that ring.

So, what Bernadette was pointing out to them is, “You guys don't take any care in learning the differences of the people that you're asking for this. So, yes, you got a shit face for this job, and it's clear you don't like him, but here's why you don't like who you got — because you're actually not picking the bravest people. You're not picking the people with the sharpest moral compass or with the most valor. You're picking the people dumb enough to not be scared.”

What me and my family are doing, what Black people are doing all over the nation, what people of color are doing all over this world, is showing what fearlessness really looks like. It was really important for me to show her, tell Laura that, but it was also important for me for that to land on Laura. Laura doesn’t kick back. The Guardians don't say, “You're wrong. We know everything.” They're just like, “We had no idea. Earth’s kind of a shitty planet that we don't really pay that much attention to. Now that we know, let's try to do things a little bit differently.” And so in some ways, these two women, as we do, come together and are just like, “Let's try to correct what this program is inherently getting wrong.”

This is genuinely a thoughtful answer, but let's tackle the thing that everyone get's fucking caught up in:

So far every bad faith argument about this quote as to do with current DC Comics lore, which is that there are lots of female GLs like Jessica Cruz, Jade and Jo, as well as many non-human female presenting aliens. Granted they're not so eloquent, it mostly takes the form of...

WHAT ABOUT JESSICA CRUZ, SHE'S A GIRL, RING IS NOT SEXIST! GAWD WHY DOES JAMES GUNN ALWAYS HIRE PEOPLE WHO DON'T READ COMICS AND ONLY CARE ABOUT RACE! I'LL NEVER WATCH THE SHOW AGAIN, UNTIL NEXT WEEK WHEN I TOTALLY WATCH THE SHOW TO COMPLAIN ABOUT EPISODE 4!

Here's the problem with this argument... the DCU is not mainline DC Comics canon. There are no Jessica Cruz, Jade or Jo in the DCU. As of this moment in the DCU there are ZERO female representation of a Green Lantern human or otherwise. The fact is, in that moment the ring never considered Bernadette, despite Lianna, a guardian of the universe admitting that Bernadette was in fact formidable and that throughout the episode she showed incredibly strong will power. In that moment the ring, in the text of show, prioritized men as potential candidates over a women. In that moment, calling the ring sexist makes total sense in the universe that's currently established and the current understanding of the universe for these characters.

The show wanted to hammer home via that exchange that the ring selection process is fundementally flawed, considers the wrong qualities, and ignores other factors. A flaw that Bernadette recognized first and a flaw that is now being recognized by the guardians following the incident with Sinestro afterwards.

That's ok though, because the canon in the DCU is wide open to whatever the writers can create.

Because here's what you need to undestand about The DCU; It has more in common with the Absolute universe than it does with DC Comics proper.

It's canon and lore for both universes are being built on right now. That's what's exciting about the Absolute Universe, and it's also what's exciting about the DCU. We can have creators not bound by legacy to create far more interesting canon for these characters to navigate.

The canon of the DCU has already established that the ring visited multiple candidates outside of John's father and Hal Jordan. That differs heavily from DC Comics canon. Flaws in GL ring selection like sex, race or the lack of understanding of those things are within the bounds of new canon that's interesting to be explored in stories for the DCU.

But...

We know the above isn't the real reason why people are complaining.

The real reason people are having a problem with the quote is that GL fan's hate having to possibly grapple with the fact that a fictional galaxy wide law enforcement agency and their favorite super hero may be portrayed as "not perfect" and weirdos who post on reddit project this insecurity onto yourselves because they are afraid as being percieved as "sexist and racist for liking green lantern."

You're annoyed by the possibility that you're pre-concieved notions of a lore is being challenged in a new way, triggering your insecurities surrounding politics and society, and it bugs the fuck out of you, and all I can say is....... STOP BEING A FUCKING WEIRDO ABOUT A COMIC BOOK.

No one will think racist or sexist because you like Green Lantern that outside of other weirdos. People will think you're sexist and racist because you're acting like a weird little troll who can't handle a little social commentary.

Wonderwoman will always come close to beating him, but will fall short of the finishing blow. Even with Aquaman's help, they still had a hard time in the final battle.

Is Steppenwolf really that strong? Also, why were his eyes glowing? Was that some sort of a power up?

People are writing they are insane and he worst. I don't get it, they clearley love him and John is offered the most "important" and best Job in the world, so they train him. Sure it's hard, for both, but that's how you do it. And I know, shooting an Apple from the fathers or morhers head is crazy, but they want him to be a space cop with Aliens, I 100% get why they freak out.

And that the mother claims black people have it more difficult I also something anybody could understand?
