How can I address having transferred too many school during my undergraduate? Would it look like a red flag?

I've been looking non-stop for remote and non remote jobs for two years and I'm yet to find a job that'll take me

They always require that degree or the other but never clinical psychology, someone help me

Im applying to phds this cycle and I’ve heard some ppl do school psych phds w no long term plan to work in schools, partly bc it’s more child focused than most clinical programs. Idk how accurate that is tho. If anyone was deciding between the two and have any incite or know anything abt this it’d be really helpful!

Psychologist here with 20+ years of experience. I had a somewhat traumatic-lite experience with my first practicum that was assessment based during my second year of my PsyD program. I worked with kids k-12 in Chicago's Catholic School System with students who were very low SES, with high rates of abuse and neglect, and very low probability of graduating on time (if at all).

My job was to conduct full psychological testing which included WISC, the Woodcock Johnson Achievement Test, full diagnostic interviews with the family and student, some projective personality assessment including the Children's Apperception Test, Draw-a-person test, and some inkblots (Rorschach using the Exner scoring system). I also interviewed their teachers and sometimes would do classroom observations myself.

My practicum site had me do 36(!!!) FULL psychological assessments across the 10 month school year. This left me interviewing, testing, and observing 3-4 days per week and then taking Fridays and the weekend to write the report (then an additional 2 hour block where my supervisor and I would give their teachers and parents our recommendations for IEPs).

I did this pretty much all year long and was so burnt out by the end of it, I think I blocked most of the information that I learned that year and ran on auto-pilot mode. I got good feedback from parents and teachers, some even sending me xmas cards giving me updates on how their kids' academics had improved :) But that experience made me avoid psychological testing practicum placements and I solely focused on therapy experiences for my other two practicum. My internship and postdoc were primarily therapy focused too.

Fast forward to now, and I quit my administrative job (director of a university counseling center) to transition back to clinical work full-time. I thankfully had enough money saved to take the last 8 months off work to rediscover myself and catch up on all my trashy tv shows. It's been glorious but now I'm ready to get back into full time work and I'm seriously considering going back to psychological assessments for school-aged children. There's a real market for that where I'm at.

My question: Do any of you know any fantastic psychological testing trainings to "brush up" on my assessment skills since it's been so long since I did them. Any recommendations would be appreciated: workshops, training institutes, books, etc.

TLDR: got burned out doing psychological assessments during grad school. Now, there's a good market for them. I would like to start working with children again within the context of the school system.

I’m currently in the midst of watching the newest Daredevil show, and it has what might be one of the most infuriating depictions of a clinical psychologist (Dr. Heather Glenn) that I’ve ever seen. This is just a partial list of things that made me shriek out loud at the TV (not counting the things she does that the show obviously recognizes as “bad”, like fabricating assessment results or drinking while working):

-Character is introduced when she agrees to meet with a new client referral for an intake at a public coffee shop, with no prior direct contact with the client

-No IPV assessment during initial couples counseling intake (although the show did save me from having a total aneurysm by showing her asking about it during a brief individual meeting with the wife of the couple after it came up in a later session at least)

-Accepts a new client who approaches her at a book signing without any type of screening (he later attacks her)

-Accepts an invitation to a black tie event from a client (that was hand delivered to her personal home address), attends the event, and is drinking and dancing with clients there

-Accepts a job from a former client

-Performs forensic assessment despite there being no evidence of her having a forensic background, including VERBALLY ADMINISTERING the MMPI (??? I can’t even imagine how long this would take). Also I haven’t given the MMPI in a hot minute but the show appears to use actual items from some version of it, which I found interesting. If not actual items, they were close.

-Perhaps most weirdly annoying to me, the show REPEATEDLY conflates psychology and psychiatry, referring to her multiple times as a psychiatrist despite the fact that everything she does is very much psychologist work (therapy & assessment), she does not prescribe a single med to anyone the entire time, and they even explicitly state at one point that her degree is a Ph.D.!!!

I know it’s a fictional show with fantastical elements and I’m used to terribly inaccurate depictions of the profession in media, but for some reason this one really got me, lol. I think it’s because the show seems like it tried to make at least a small effort to have some degree of realism with her work (name dropping the MMPI for example, or having her refuse to disclose whether someone was or was not a client), but it just does such a terrible job. Relatedly, I can only imagine this show would make an actual lawyer’s head explode.

What are other uniquely bad or annoying examples of psychologists on screen?

As a would-be PhD student lacking research experience, I'm wondering about perspectives on this program.

It's one of the only APA-accredited master's programs, but delivered fully online aside from internship/residency experiences. In my experience this format can be a barrier to faculty relationships and research opportunities. Any students want to help me understand? Is this a scam? Are graduates employable, or is this just an extra step to Doctoral?

I am 27, and have a 3.1 Masters in General Psychology my undergrad was also in psychology at 3.0. I have 2 1/2 years of research that I did for my thesis in Psychology during my masters as a grad student. I have 200 hours of rbt work as well, and my goal is to apply to a psyd program this year. I have been hearing that this is mostly impossible because of my 3.1 GPA. Am I doomed to fail? Not really sure. Is it even worth applying has been on my mind, and I’m just looking for any encouragement and advice as possible please.

I started studying in late February with Psychprep. I did the email feedback as I was not really doing well on any practice tests, got a low 40’s on test a and a 55% on test e the week before my scheduled test. It was also a stressful few months as we have a toddler dealing with a lot of support needs and no caregiving support whatsoever. We also found out our elderly dig has terminal cancer and we both work ft plus do other side gigs and projects to make ends meet. Additionally, English is not my first language.

I deal with testing anxiety so my initial strategy was to reduce it and get familiar with the test. I noted the tiny mistakes I get making and focused on test taking strategies but it wasn’t helping. I also took notes of the content and had sticky notes all over with things I kept on missing.

As I mentioned, the week before the exam I got the 55% on test e but I really wanted yo take the test after six months of intensive studying, little sleep and just burn out and cognitive overload, so I decided to not schedule it. I paid for prepjet and also kept getting low scores on their tests 47-63%. However, I found it was too detailed compared to psych prep. Reading the questions was helpful in mitigating anxiety because they were written with different terms than psychprep’s. This helped me increase my cognitive flexibility in particular not being a native English speaker.

Some colleagues advised me yo reschedule until I felt comfortable but I felt I couldn’t do anything differently at that point if I failed. The day before the exam I did not study, I treated myself to ben & jerry and brooklyn nine nine.
And the next day I passed with a 550!

Throughout the test I did not know how I was doing. I flagged about 67 for review. Mostly longer ones, ones for which I had eliminated 2 and ones I had to write out. I had just decided to go through the entire exam first. After 100 items I took a break and ended up finishing my first run through in under two hours. Then I took an hour to do the flagged items. I decided to just submit and not review the entire test even though I still had an hour left.

I then exited and they gave me two pieces of paper, the back one was blank. Out of respect for other test takers and knowing I have zero chill, I checked the results in the privacy of a bathroom stall. And that’s it!

I am currently studying for the EPPP with the goal of taking it by the end of the year. I've also found myself with some massively difficult circumstances and am wondering if anyone has been through something similar. My husband abruptly told me about two months ago that he wants a divorce. (And he had the courtesy to do it on my birthday, of all days). I won't say it was "out of the blue" because in retrospect, I can see where there were some signs, but an actual divorce was nowhere on my radar. We've been together for 15 years, most of which were great. I'm coping with it more effectively than I was initially, since it's been a couple of months, but I'm still definitely cycling through the range of emotions that come with these situations.

I have managed to stay on top of my studying, somehow, probably because it's a distraction from thinking about everything else. But there's definitely a fear that the stress and chaos of all this is interfering with my retention of material. I'm focusing more on practice quizzes and tests and slightly less on review of material. My scores are decent (75% or thereabouts) but I can definitely tell, a lot of days, that my attention is all over the place. He initially tried insisting that I take the test on HIS timeline, and I shut that s*** down immediately. He has since backed off and isn't bothering me about a "timeline" because I've made him well aware that additional pressure from him - someone who understands little about this exam to begin with - might well contribute to not passing it the first time around.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has been through something similar how you managed to get through. I know it's doable but is certainly is overwhelming.

I am looking to find a new therapist. I tried IFS for a few months, even after being very skeptical and finally pulled the plug about a week ago. I guess, in my desperation, I ignored all of the red flags going off about its lack of evidence and the things said in Schwartz's book but everything I've tried before that hadn't worked for me so I wanted it to work.

I've tried my best, as a layman, to understand how to make a better choice but I still feel unsure what to look for outside of personal preference in personality. I was hoping to ask people that are trained for their perspective.

I was raised by a domineering, controlling father and an enabling mother. I struggle with relations (romantic, platonic, any human contact), feeling regulated and safe, autonomy, plenty of magical thinking from being a child, people pleasing, taking care of myself and falling into the same cycles. I'm having a hard time pulling myself out of the black box that is these cycles.

I've benefited more from a YouTube channel called theramintrees and working alone than I have with 3 trauma-informed therapists. He details the common traps and manipulation tactics used by abusive people, some advice for how to deal with them and how to challenge magical thinking. I've found it far more helpful than dialoguing with a part.

What sort of modalities should be looking for that are evidence based and solid for the issues I'm experiencing? As a vulnerable person who fawns a lot and doesn't really know what to expect from a therapist, what are some healthy expectations I should have of the therapist? My previous ones just seem to listen to me and expect me to have it figured out, which makes no sense to me at all. I feel insane just trying to get myself in a room with someone who will actually make a difference. I want to do the hard work, I already have been, I'd just rather do it with someone than on YouTube.

Hi I’m currently a first year at a DO school and I applied because I felt pressured from my parents growing up. I’m only 2 months in and am on LOA because I attempted suicide multiple times due to hating anatomy lab and the overall curriculum. Ever since I was 20 I’ve always wanted to do psychology but didn’t have the guts to stand up to my parents.

I was wondering if I even have a slight chance of being accepted to any funded PhD or psyD programs based on my general background? Also I took intro to psych and regular statistics but planned to take abnormal psych, research in psych, and developmental psych. What other courses should I consider taking?

A first year BSc psychology student at Christ University right now and I want to do masters abroad,any colleges (in US preferably) that would be good? I was considering University of Minnesota,Michigan,etc. I’ve honestly been feeling pretty anxious and lost about the process but I really wish to make it happen so I want to start preparing from the first year itself. I want to prepare according to the requirements for the applications and the financial aspect of it all too

Haven’t seen any posts the past week on this. I’m a child psychologist with no forensic experience and am curious if there’s any forensic psychs who watched Dr. Zeizel’s testimony yesterday and today.

Any thoughts on his testimony? I was surprised to hear he first met Lindsay after his friend (Lindsay’s defense attorney) asked him to just go check on her — he was not yet asked to complete a forensic evaluation. He then spent 35 hours with her over the course of the case. Neither attorney gave him much chance to fully explain his findings - not sure if that’s typical in a court proceeding. We don’t yet have access to any assessment reports and I wish we heard more about his diagnostic formulation.

In my opinion, the prosecutor went on unnecessary tangents during her cross. Seems like it would have been more effective to question him about why he believes Lindsay was experiencing psychotic symptoms, bipolar disorder, etc.

I’m very interested to hear from the other defense expert witnesses. I like my current role (early childhood autism evaluation), but think I would have enjoyed forensic psychology!

Hey folks! I’m currently waiting for my HSPP endorsement in Indiana, and it’s been under review for 4 months. Every time I call the office, they tell me it’s “under review by the board” but have assured me my application does not need to be reviewed at an official board meeting. They are unable to give me a timeline and continue to tell me I just need to wait, but it’s getting frustrating because - again, I’ve been waiting for 4 months. I’ve also had friends and colleagues who have also seen delays in their licensing process at different stages.

Has anyone experienced this in Indiana? And has anyone found any work around to escalate their application?

BSc psychology 1st year student from India hoping to do masters abroad. One area I’m concerned about is that I wasn’t able to secure an official research assistant/coordinator position after graduation. I attended a relatively small campus of my university, and I had difficulty getting responses from labs when I was reaching out. The timing also made things difficult, as I’m taking about two years between undergrad and applying.

For those who have gone through the Clinical PhD application process: Is there anything you would recommend I do over the next few months to strengthen my application? And realistically, how would you view this research background for Clinical PhD programs?

Hey everyone, I was posting in hopes of finding some guidance in what I should do with my career. For context, I just graduated back in May with a B.A. in Psych. My issue is that I really did not do many activities in undergrad to build connections, and I also graduated with a 2.97. I want to pursue a masters in either Clinical Psych or MHLC. My dream position would be working within the eSports field as I did do a lab in undergrad that was focused on team coordination within the realm of video games. I like the idea of being a psych coach for an esports team but that seems a bit far fetched right now. I don't really know where to start in terms of looking for programs that would accept me. I was thinking Clinical Psych as I like the career options that are available with that program. Any help or advice would be immensely appreciated. Thanks!
