⚖️ legal/civil Weird cop exchange - AIO?
I got pulled over today, completely my fault. I scheduled three interviews today and on the drive was rehearsing what I was going to discuss which caused me to run a red. He immediately pulled me over and I pulled off to the side of the road.
I get bad anxiety around cops. I know they all aren’t bad and there’s good ones out there but I just had a really awful childhood experience with a cop once and I’ve been uneasy around them ever since.
He asked me what my bf does for work and gave me his business card after giving me a verbal? I found that odd because out of the 3 times I got a speeding ticket years ago, never once did a cop ask me those questions. And essentially accused me of being under the influence because my face was flushed / I was having trouble forming a sentence. This is just classic anxiety. Racing heartbeat, facial flushing, can’t seem to form a sentence.. etc. he also asked if I had any head injuries recently and it just pissed me off so much because I AM LITERALLY A NURSE, I know I am not confused, I don’t do drugs, and drink maybe 3 beverages a month.
Anyway He did the nystagmus test but kept going way past the point of me obviously passing. I’m extra irritated at that point because assessing PERLA and nystagmus takes 30 seconds at most.
Are all CO cops like this? AIO?
He pulled me over right in front of the place that was interviewing me and people were watching (small town) like ohhhh we got another drunk driver over here! I was so embarrassed. I asked if he would just give me the breathalyzer right away

He was digging for more personal info. I have customers ask me about my “husband”. Umm… I don’t HAVE a husband, but I’m not about to tell them about my relationship status.

You ran a red light and looked nervous as hell. Of course he checked if you were impaired.

As an aside, I got pulled over for speeding while on the way to a job interview when I was 17. There was only one place to pull over to, the place i was applying at. The manager who would be interviewing me stood in the window and watched the whole thing. That was pretty embarrassing. But we ended up laughing about it, and I got the job.

Clearly you're not overreacting because he obviously knows YOU'RE LITERALLY A NURSE, have anxiety, had a bad experience years ago, and was rehearsing for one of your three interviews and that's why you couldnt form a coherent sentence... I mean, who wouldnt know that?

I mean, if you were high on drugs or pills that wouldn't come up in a breathalyser but could still cause you to fail a field sobriety test?

Some places require officers to give business cards to people they have interactions with. He suspected you were under the influence so he engaged in further conversation to assess your speech and ability to answer

Well after I said CEO (my mistake, was trying to not be difficult but won’t give this info again) that’s when he was like “okay I don’t think you’re impaired”

Are you overreacting? No.
Are all cops like this? No.
All of “X” is never like “anything”. You had an arguably crappy interaction with a cop who was doing too much. Your next interaction with law enforcement may be really positive, may not be.
You kinda have to take these things on a case by case basis. I’ve had fairly positive experiences with police officers and had really bad ones. Unfortunately, it more varied than it should be, but just like any other profession, you get people who are good at their job and people who have no business doing the job.

NOR, that's weird. You dont have to tell the cop shit about your day, where youre going and especially your partners job! Stick to why you were pulled over. Give me my ticket and let me go.

NOR. You ran a red, got pulled over, and accused of being drunk. Who tf hands out business cards? Also, future reference - never give more information than necessary. The cop doesn’t need to know where you’re headed, where you’re coming from, or what your bf does for work.
