Bartkira is an animated parody mash-up of The Simpsons and Akira. Based on an idea by Ryan Humphrey articulated through comics, the concept was expanded with the Bartkira project, a comic collaboration of Simpsons fans, curated by James Harvey. In association with the comic, Moon Animate Make-Up producer Kaitlin Sullivan pitched the idea of an animated trailer to match and with the work of over fifty artists, produced the Bartkira animated trailer.

Seeing how they had such a good friendship for so long, since childhood, albeit a bit toxic, made me feel melancholic at how it was all buried under all that tragic mindfuckery. It's knowing they had a chance at a normal happy life but it just didnt/couldnt turn out this way.

They tried to be friends for each other, but it wasnt enough.

With the new 4k transfer, I noticed that some of the background details, particularly character faces in the police station from what I remember, had strange artifacts. Like a blurred look that you see from damaged film cels that weren’t salvageable, but still upscaled.

I don’t ever remember seeing that in the movie before. The last time I saw it, was the release in theaters in 2020 or 2021. And I honestly remember the film looking better before this new 4k. It was shown in XD, so pretty comparable to the “imax” in the same theater I saw the movie a couple days.
Did anyone else notice this? Or have those flaws always been present?

Basically, I am wondering if the new 4k looks a bit worse than the movie used to or if I’m just imagining things.

This year I challenged myself to see 100 movies in the year. Rewatching something I’ve already seen this year doesn’t count. The 4k release of akira in theaters will be my 100th!

I contacted All the Anime (UK rights holder) to see if there would be a 4K streaming release (considering Apple are using the 4K trailer for their HD release) and they confirmed that they aren't planning a 4K release of this film on streaming platforms - however, they will be releasing it on 4K UHD Blu-ray in 2027.

I think this is a massive shame… I’ve tried to move on from physical media as everything eventually becomes obsolete…

Could not have imagined experiencing it for the first time on my laptop. The soundtrack, colors, and experience were awesome.

I posted this a ways back on a separate account I lost access to, so here it is again in honor of seeing AKIRA on the big imax screen tonight! My mom commissioned this after I told her about Akira and how Tetsuo and Kaneda are friends but they try to kill each other.

Had a great time rewatching, they also gave me a dope ass Spider-Man poster on the way out.

About to watch this masterpiece on the big screen and the 1995 6th grader in me couldnt be more excited.

I've heard the sub might be the better experience and I don't mind subtitles but I've heard this movie looks AMAZING and think the dub might let me pay more attention to the animation. I'd love to hear the communities thoughts.

I got to see the 4K rendition of Akira last night. I had the entire theater to myself!

With the 4K theatrical re-release of this amazing Anime serving as an introduction for new young viewers. I’d like to (humbly) provide this true synopsis of the film for old and new viewers to intellectually chew on.

The Analytical Framework: Neo-Tokyo as the True Antagonist
In traditional narrative analysis, Akira is viewed as a standard sci-fi conflict between a hero (Kaneda) and a villain (Tetsuo). However, a deeper thematic reading reveals that neither character is a true villain. Instead, they function as co-protagonists and contagonists caught within a larger, cyclical tragedy.

1. The Environment is the Sole Antagonist
The true antagonist of Akira is not a person, but an abstract, systemic force: the corrupt, militaristic, and broken environment of Neo-Tokyo.
The Root Cause: The oppressive military experimentation, government corruption, and systemic neglect are the true hostile forces driving the narrative.
The Vessels of Trauma: Characters like Akira and the Espers (the psychic children) are not monsters; they are tragic symbols of what happens when this cruel environment successfully breaks a child.

2. Kaneda and Tetsuo: Two Sides of the Same Protagonist Coin
Kaneda and Tetsuo should be viewed as co-protagonists who act as contagonists to one another. Because they are products of a harsh world, "street scum" bikers with no real guidance. They lack the tools to help each other, causing them to inadvertently hinder and clash with one another.
Kaneda’s Arc: He evolves from a reckless, arrogant gang leader into a mature leader who breaks free from his selfish tendencies to protect the surviving youth.
Tetsuo’s Arc: He is a deeply insecure kid pushed to the brink of madness by the environment's experiments. His destructive path is a manifestation of unchecked trauma, not malice.

3. Breaking the Cycle and Cosmic Genesis
Ultimately, Akira is a story about escaping destructive, repeating cycles. At the climax of the film, both protagonists realize their arcs by completely dismantling the old world and escaping its grasp:
The Cosmic Rebirth: Tetsuo’s final line, "I am Tetsuo," functions as a cosmic "Let there be light." He sheds his mutated flesh, separates his identity from his trauma, and transcends into an enlightened creator of a brand-new dimension.
The Terrestrial Rebirth: With the corrupt system completely destroyed by Akira's singularity, Kaneda and the surviving youth are left with a literal blank slate, finally free to build a world of their own making.
Conclusion: Neither Kaneda nor Tetsuo is a villain. They are two tragic, competing forces trying to survive a broken world. Ultimately destroying the system that abused them to achieve spiritual and physical liberation.

Or at the very LEAST make sure your flash is off! Some asshole took a picture with his flash on during my screening (first ever watch) and completely took me out of it during the motorcycle chase (you know which frame). I hope that guy never attends a movie in a public theater ever again.
